Title: Insomnia
Post by: Martinus on May 27, 2012, 03:50:16 AM
I fucking hate it when it comes. I have been under a lot of stress at work lately (two big projects at the same time, going on my first vacation in nearly a year next week and worrying how am I going to delegate the projects to other people during my absence, annual performance/pay review coming up this week and I really need a raise/bonus), been drinking a bit too much wine before sleep/too much coffee during the day, and the motherfucking street services have been repairing the road in front of my window for the last 2-3 weeks, with pneumatic hammers starting at 7 am and ending around midnight.

So for the last 3 weeks or so (not every night) I am having nights where if I dont go to bed around 10 pm, I cant fall asleep until 4-5 am in the morning. (eg last night guests left at 2 am, I fell asleep half past four and woke up at 7am to the motherfucking sledgehammers on Sunday morning).

I found this website which seems pretty sensible (and some of the stuff I have been using myself): http://www.helpguide.org/life/insomnia_treatment.htm

Would appreciate if fellow insomnia sufferers could give me some tips in addition/contrary to what the website says. :)

I'm sorry you can't sleep, but stop spending all your money on rent boys and you won't need a raise.  :)

 I have a new mortgage, need cash to outfit my new apartment and want to keep saving at the same level (despite weakening zloty) I have been before I took the mortgage. The money I spend on my boyfriend probably represents 1/10 of increased living costs, if even that.

Martinus is no better than the broke-ass retired cops I know, working on their 3rd or 4th wives.  They'd have been able to retire comfortably if they didn't piss away so much treasure on useless ass they couldn't live with.  He's on his way.

Other than the usual (no caffeine after 1pm, maintain militancy about a regular bedtime, shit like that) start taking Melatonin (3mg dosage, take 1 to start, up it to 3 after a week or so) as a supplement about 3-4 hours prior to bedtime: it will increase your brain's ability to tell the rest of your system it's time to shut down for the night, and reinforces your body's natural circadian rhythm.

You could try eating a lot more and getting fat.  I understand that helps people sleep.

Try some alcohol, right before bed.

18-21 km run every other day and weights on the days you dont do that. Add a good meal afterwards and you´ll sleep like a baby.

Massive amounts of sugar a few hours before bed, the sugar crash will carry him through the night.

You don't know the worst of it.  Now without the crib (and after the two gleeful weeks where he didn't realize he wsn't in a crib) the kid now wakes up at 6:30-7 and beelines for our room to wake us up. :(

Yeah you are scaring me. I'm think that when I lose the crib I'm staring at a 5ham wake cup call.

Stop drinking wine mid-week. Might make you feel relaxed before bedtime, but it gives you a rotten disturbed sleep, believe me. And no caffeine (even tea) after 6pm.

Get a bedtime routine and do the same every night - say shower, read a book for half an hour, go to bed.

No phone or computer use in the bedroom. Very important one in this day and age. It's a combination of the light source and being constantly in communication mode.

Finally, perhaps you'd like to swap your money worries with mine?

Little Tim was up at 5:30 this morning.

My wife just put him back to bed though, and he wasn't up again until I went to work at 7.

God, you're like all these guys on my doc review project.  LOL I AM TEH SUCCESSFUL LAWYER, till they're, y'know, not.  And then they've got these giant mortgages and shit so they work 70 hours a week for wages I find more than acceptable, but which do not pay for fancy schmancy bullshit.  Like homes.

I mean, I guess you'll be fine, but have you considered living within your means?  It works!

Also, I do sympathize with your insomnia.  My hours have been all fucked up, which I blame on not having a physical job, so when I get home, while I'm mentally exhausted/bored out of my gourd, I'm not physically tired and I wind up trying to make up for the loss of stimulation by staying up late.  Also, sometimes when we have deadlines I stay till six a.m. working, which is pretty bogus, although the cool part about my job (about the only one) is that I can show up whenever I want, so it doesn't really impact me that much as long as I put in the hours and my team communicates effectively.

Now, now, don't be cruel. Anyway why is anyone letting semen leak on the bed?

Also semen is apparently not family friendly and I had to teach it to my kindle.

Oh, that's very good.
