That was not a whine.  I actually like the move.  The whole uncapped year that was not actually an uncapped year thing not so much.

Daaamn, even Timmay's swimming in the feeding frenzy

Late money has the Ravens trading out of the 1st and taking the center from Wisconsin, Peter Konz.  Wouldn't be a sexy pick, but definitely needed.  And he's a man-child bulldozer who can play left guard.  Health issues, though.

But a lot of the murmurs coming from the Castle are saying they're going to go pass rush.  WR is deep in this draft, so that may wait.

Don't be surprised if they pick an inside LB that falls far enough to help with the post-Ray Ray era, though.

It's hard to get into the draft, as I don't know or care about college football.  Also, the Rangers are playing the Senators, with advancement to the second round on the line.

Once guys don the purple, then they become real to me.  Until then, they're just amateurs.

I have to say that apart from seeing if the Bengals draft to their needs and keeping tabs on which (if any) WVU or Delaware players get drafted, I don't follow the draft all that closely.  I love both NFL and college football, but I need some "time off" each year from any sport I follow.

The draft is pretty over-rated.  I mean it is not over-rated in the sense that it is the most proven method to build a great team but as a form of entertainment.  I mean I love the University of Texas and I hope each player has a great career but which specific team they play on does not matter much unless it is the Redskins.

I usually wake up from my football hibernation a week before camp.  Which mercifully will be held in Cincy this year rather than Georgetown, KY.

Yeah I prefer to follow sports that are actually playing games but here in Texas all the sports media does is talk about football year round.

The lead story will be which right tackle impressed the coaches at today's drills at UT.  Somewhere they might mention the San Antionio Spurs just wrapped up the #1 seed in the Western Conference in the NBA playoffs....maybe.

He's an improvement over Collinsworth and his annoying mid-sentence pauses.

I'd like to have a Gus Johnson toggle switch in Madden.  When I need a laugh, I switch it on.  When my ears start to bleed, I switch it off.

edit: wtf

Yeah, I know.  For whatever reason, Simms just doesn't bother me.  Then again, I don't have to hear Simms doing non-stop local radio & TV ads for car dealerships, window replacement, and heating/cooling.

Since CC lives around here, he leaves his iPad at Paul Brown Stadium to be synced up with each week's game films.  I saw it in the video room late last season & I swear I wanted to smash it into pieces.

Heh, OK, I can understand that then.  Sorta the same reason I cringe when Jim Palmer's calling a game--I heard his voice three times on radio and TV commercials already that day.

For some voices I kinda like hearing them regularly.  For example, Marty Brennaman has been doing Reds games on the radio for as long as I've been alive (give or take a few months).  I have memories going back to the the 70s of listening to Reds games with him and Joe Nuxhall (RIP) on the radio.  It was sad when Nuxy died in 2007 and it just won't be the same whenever Marty is gone.

It's not so much that I like Marty Brennaman-- in fact he's pretty much a self-aggrandizing asshole.  But I do like hearing his voice on the radio :)

I miss Hank Stram, when he used to do MNF for CBS Radio back in the day, when I wasn't allowed to stay up past 9.  I had one of those bulky ass radio headsets from the late 70s/early 80s that ran on a 9-volt battery and only got AM stations, and I'd listen to the games.  Looked like a cosmonaut in that damned thing.

Since my father is a sports writer, and my cousin is a sports broadcaster (normally does the local minor league baseball team, but he actually did colour on a handful of Winnipeg Jets games on the radio this last year) I hate the constant stream of ex-athletes they bring in to broadcasting.  It's a whole separate skill set from playing the sport.  They need to focus on bringing in talented play-by-play and colour analysts, not ex-athletes.

Ex-athletes can bring some insight that career broadcasters lack, though.  And some of them (definitely not all, but some) are able to make up for lost time & become good announcers in their own right.  I'd put the Bengals radio color guy, Dave Lapham, in that category.  Bonus points for him because he played for the New Jersey Generals after his 10-year stint with the Bengals.

Now the current Reds radio color guy is Jeff Brantley and he is horrible.  Every time I hear him speak I think back to the one season he pitched for the Cardinals where they had spent big bucks to get him and I believe he set a club record for blown saves.  Plus his Mississippi accent is annoying and he adds no special insight.

Keith Moreland, former Philly and Cub and Texas football/baseball player and current Chicago Cub broadcaster, was amazing when he called the Texas games and as a former catcher his knowledge of baseball was almost eerie.  He would call everything before it happened.

'This would be a good situation to send the runner at first....and there he goes'

'The next pitch will probably be a slider inside....and a great inside slider for a critical strike out'

and so forth.  He knew football as well but damn it was like listening to Napoleon give commentary on a battle when he called a baseball game.

The Browns and I are on a break till Heckert and Holmgren are gone.  Holy fucksticks did they butcher the first round in every conceivable way possible.  Overpaying and trading up for a guy who would probably still be there.  Reaching for a QB when they need an RT, RG, and LG far, far, far more with top teir talent at those positions still on the board.  Not to mention the QB's supposed best feature is his arm strength.  Which would be all well and good if it were the Raiders or someone with speedy recievers and that offensive scheme, but they've been preaching and gutting the prior roster to set up a West Coast Offense since Holmgren rolled into town.  Utter fiasco.

But imagine how much better he could do with a stud RT and RG or LG instead of a QB.  Idiots.  It makes me pissed just thinking about it.  Watching the Bengals draft a position the Raiders need with their Carson Palmer pick sucked too.  It was a terrible draft day for me to say the least.

No biggest need was RG, or depth on DL.

They signed Manningham and taking a flyer on Moss. with the depth at WR in draft they would have been better trading down like Ravens did when the Lineman they liked were already picked.

Stud backer.

Yeah what the hell was that.  I understand with Gabbert at QB you will get a lot of mileage out of a punter but I am sure they had another hole they could have filled there and got a punter later.

And the Colts draft a 2nd TE?

Did you hear about the dick-headed prank someone pulled on him?

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d828aa527/article/mohamed-sanu-the-victim-of-cruel-draftday-prank?module=HP11_content_stream

QuoteMohamed Sanu thought he was a brand-new member of the Cincinnati Bengals. This wasn't a hunch or some inside info whispered into his ear by his agent. The Bengals called him.

Or so he thought.

In some of the weakest sauce ever concocted, the Rutgers wide receiver was the victim of a prank Thursday night. His phone rang, and a person identifying themselves as a Bengals official told him he was the 27th overall pick.

Sanu and his family exploded into celebration -- he was a first-round draft pick in the NFL. Then the Bengals selected Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler.

"This is a great kid, I guarantee you, and someone played a cruel joke on him," Sanu's agent, Mike McCartney, told SI.com's Peter King. "It is unreal that someone would do that, but it happened."

Sanu said he's fine and told McCartney whatever team actually drafts him will get a playmaker. A great attitude to have, but you can only imagine how much this prank must have hurt. Humanity fail.

Coincidence he ends up on the Bengals anyhoo?

My daughter joked about prank calling a player last night when the draft was on.  I laughed at her and told her that that would never happen.  When I saw the story today I told her about it and now she feels guilty, like she had something to do with it.

True.  Sometimes it is hard to remember that some crappy organizations occasionally luck into an all-time QB which skews our perception of them.

LULZ, Coach Harbaugh (the calm one, not the frenetic one), calls out the Pats (unfortunately, he doesn't call out the collaborator commissioner):

QuoteHarbaugh: Pats titles have asterisks

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday morning he thought the New England Patriots' three championships won under Bill Belichick "got asterisks now" and have been "stained" by the Spygate scandal that rocked the team in 2007.

Harbaugh made the comments in an interview on a Baltimore radio station. He was asked about the New Orleans Saints' recent bounty scandal and whether it was worth bending the rules if he thought he could get away with it, and Harbaugh brought up the Patriots' videotaping controversy in his response.

"In the end, everything is brought before the light of day, when it's all said and done," Harbaugh said on "98 Rock" in Baltimore. "What happens, even the thing in New England, no matter whether those things had any impact on whether they won their championships or not, they got asterisks now. It's been stained.

"To me, it's never worth it. You have to figure out ways to use the rules to your advantage, you have to figure out ways to make the most of everything. We have new work rules here as far as what we can do and what we can't do with our players, and we're going to make the most of it. What we're finding is, 'Man, maybe we can do some things even better than we did before, because these rules make us focus more on some things that we didn't focus on before. You just have to make them work for you. That's what success is in the world. You have to find a way to do things better than somebody else. But if you're cheating, in the end, you're going to get discredited. It's not worth it."

Harbaugh clarified his comments in a statement released by the Ravens on Tuesday afternoon.

"While on the 98 Rock show this morning to talk about the run to honor O.J. Brigance and raise funds for ALS research, I answered a question about playing within the rules and referred to the perception that the Super Bowl championships won by the Patriots and Saints have a stain. My reference was to the perception out there that came as the result of the league's actions," Harbaugh said in the statement.

"I could have been more clear that I was referring to those viewpoints. I totally believe that the Patriot and Saint coaches and players earned those championships. Bill (Belichick) and Sean (Payton) both know that."

On Sept. 9, 2007, a Patriots cameraman was caught illegally videotaping the New York Jets' sideline during a game at Giants Stadium. It mushroomed into a controversy that hovered over the Patriots during their historic 16-0 season in 2007. Ultimately, the league handed down severe sanctions, with Belichick receiving a $500,000 fine. The Patriots were fined $250,000 and were stripped of a first-round draft pick.

ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi, who was a linebacker on all three of the Patriots' title teams in the early 2000s and was with the Patriots in 2007 when the Spygate scandal broke, said he was perplexed by Harbaugh's comments.

"You want to take a shot, go ahead and say it," Bruschi said on Tuesday's "SportsCenter." "When I look down at my hand and I see championship rings, I know how much work had to be put in to win those championships. I'm very set and secure with all of the victories that we had, the work we put in."

Bruschi also reminded Harbaugh that, in some ways, he has Belichick to thank for landing the head coaching job with the Ravens in 2007. According to reports, the Ravens did not have Harbaugh on their coaching radar until Belichick called the team and recommended they talk to Harbaugh, who was then a Philadelphia Eagles assistant.

"The shot at coach Belichick I don't understand," Bruschi said. "When coach Harbaugh was interviewing for the job in Baltimore, it was coach Belichick that vouched for him. There's a little bit of loyalty that coach Harbaugh needs to learn."

Harbaugh said in the statement released by the Ravens that he called Belichick and Bruschi on Tuesday after his comments started to make headlines.

"I have so much respect for Coach Belichick and the job he does and has accomplished in his Hall of Fame career," he said. "I called him to remind him of my respect for him. I also reached out to Tedy Bruschi, who rightfully defended those Patriot players and coaches on ESPN, to tell him that I agree with him that the Patriots earned every victory."

Until his Tuesday radio interview, Harbaugh has had nothing but respectful things to say about Belichick and the Patriots. He even came to the defense of the team earlier this year after his kicking consultant insinuated the Patriots might have been involved in a scoreboard malfunction that may or may not have contributed to the Ravens losing the 2012 AFC title game at Gillette Stadium.

Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff said he was rushed before hooking a 32-yard field goal, which would have tied the game with 11 seconds left in regulation, because he thought it was third down by looking at the scoreboard. It was actually fourth down.

"I don't think you can rule anything out in New England, can you?" the consultant, Randy Brown, said.

Soon after, Harbaugh squashed what could have been a blossoming controversy.

"We knew what the down and distance were on our last series," Harbaugh said. "The scoreboard was not a factor for us. Any suggestion that the wrong down information was a deliberate effort to affect the outcome of the game is nonsense."

The Patriots face the Ravens in Baltimore in Week 3 of the upcoming NFL season.

Of course Bruschi is going to talk smack back.  Fucking monkey.

Not all teams are evil, heartless and devoid of humanity.  Like New England.

QuoteTAMPA, Fla. -- In a symbolic gesture, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, whose playing career was ended by a spinal cord injury, on Wednesday morning.

LeGrand played for Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano at Rutgers. In a game Oct. 16, 2010, against Army, LeGrand suffered fractures of two vertebrae and a spinal cord injury.

Schiano called LeGrand's mother in New Jersey to let her know of his intention the night before breaking the news to his former player.

"I said, 'Are you serious? You want to do this?' He said: 'It's the least we could do,' " LeGrand said Wednesday during a conference call. "I said I don't even know what to say to you right now, coach. This is amazing.

"It's something I always dreamed about, go to the NFL and retire and become a sportscaster," LeGrand added. "Dreams do come true if you really believe. You do the right things in life, good things happen to you. He really just did this out of the kindness of his heart. It's really what he wanted to do. I had no idea this was going to happen."

LeGrand initially was told he would be a quadriplegic and would have to remain on a ventilator.

Five weeks later, LeGrand began breathing on his own. Later, he became able to stand upright with the aid of a metal frame.

LeGrand resumed his studies in spring 2011. He led the Scarlet Knights onto the field for an Oct. 29, 2011, game and has remained close with Schiano.

"Leading up to the draft, I couldn't help but think that this should've been Eric's draft class," Schiano said. "This small gesture is the least we could do to recognize his character, spirit and perseverance. The way Eric lives his life epitomizes what we are looking for in Buccaneer Men."

The Buccaneers also decided to make the signing May 2, to represent LeGrand's college number (52).

He put up a photo of a Tampa Bay helmet on his Twitter page, tweeting, "We ready!!!"

"It's a symbolic gesture. They can't give me any money with the salary cap and all that kind of stuff," LeGrand said in his conference call. "It's symbolic, something coach wanted to do and I appreciate that. It just shows the man that he is." LeGrand is planning to graduate this fall with a degree in labor studies.

Sad to hear about Seau.  Even though he played for teams I hated, he seemed like a decent enough guy, especially early in his career with all of his charity work.  The suspensions are silly and waaaay too long, but I'm not surprised at all.  Goodell continues his quest to be the biggest douche GM in the major sports in America, a tough battle to win.  Also, awesome on Bruce's little big bro hitting the pros.
Title: Re: NFL 2012 Draft: Teh Mega Thread!

Unless Goodell manages to demolish the popularity of the NFL, I think that Bettman's crown is secure.

Yeah, the suspensions seem a little bit over the top, especially Vilma's.  They're framing this as a player safety issue, but it's really a league rule issue with non-contract bonuses.

QuoteJunior Seau's death further saddens his 1994 Chargers teammates
By Les Carpenter | Yahoo! Sports – 1 hour 11 minutes ago

Once again the phones started to ring, former San Diego Chargers from the franchise's lone Super Bowl team calling each other and digesting the news that another one of them was gone. With word that Junior Seau died Wednesday, the number of Chargers who played in the Super Bowl on Jan. 29, 1995, and are now dead, is eight.

Eight in 18 years; too many in too little time.

The subject is one I discussed, somewhat uncomfortably, with several of the former Chargers in 2008. This wasn't long after Chris Mims, their gregarious defensive end, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment. Five had died back then. And that seemed like a lot.

I called a professor of actuarial science at the University of Wisconsin to see if she could put number on five men from a 53-man roster – all in their 20s and 30s – dying in so short a time. She said the odds were less than 1 percent.

"Is this a curse or something?" center Courtney Hall said then. "I just hope I'm not next."

On Wednesday, Hall sounded drained. Hours of phone calls with teammates had tired him. And there lingered that sense of confusion over how so many men who would be in their 40s, who seemed so vibrant, are no longer alive.

"I'm still kind of processing everything right now," Hall said. "I had more to say back [in 2008] than I do now. I really am at a loss for words."

The unsettling thing about the Chargers' deaths is their randomness. Five months after the Super Bowl, running back David Griggs died in a car accident on an off-ramp of the Florida Turnpike that was no more than 10 minutes from where the game had been played at Joe Robbie Stadium. The next year, running back Rodney Culver and his wife died on a ValuJet crash in the Florida Everglades, also not far from Miami. In 1998 linebacker Doug Miller was struck twice by lightning while camping in Colorado. Backup center Curtis Whitley died of a drug overdose in 2008 only months before Mims died from an enlarged heart and heart disease. Linebacker Lew Bush and defensive tackle Shawn Lee had fatal heart attacks last year.

And now Seau. The irony is that as a player he might have been the liveliest of them all – the first one to laugh, the one with the biggest smile, the biggest star – and to hear reports he had killed himself? It didn't make sense.

"The thing I related to everybody is that we are a brotherhood of those of us who played football," Hall said Wednesday. "We developed bonds and dealt with the same issues and the same ups and downs. For me, I've gotten to the point where I wish we as a group of elite athletes are able to reach out to each other more and are able to talk about what's going on in our lives."

Back in 2008, Hall talked about looking for some of his Chargers teammates. He found tight end Deems May on LinkedIn and asked the team for the phone numbers of other former players. Some of those may have been the same men he spoke with Wednesday.

Perhaps there's nothing anyone can do about a plane crash or someone getting hit by lightning twice, but so many of the other deaths seemed preventable. Tackle Stan Brock wondered in 2008 how Whitley could die alone in a trailer. "Where were his friends?" he asked. Mims suffered from weight problems and became depressed before his death. Lee was reported to have had weight and other health issues when he died.

Could phone calls have helped? Should they have been calling Seau and checking on him? Hall wonders. He said several of his teammates did too.

"In general we talked about getting together and reaching out to one another," he said. "I woke up this morning in pain [from old football injuries]. Everyone deals with everything differently."

He seemed to hope this latest bad news would bring them closer together.

Whenever players from the Super Bowl team talk about that season they always marvel at the magic they felt. They describe the locker-room camaraderie as the best they were ever around. Players stayed late at the practice facility. They ordered food. They arrived at the stadium early on home game days, throwing on their uniform pants and pads, then sitting in a room just off the stadium locker room playing Mortal Kombat and Madden NFL until they had to go onto the field for warmups.

It was a happy time. It was a wonderful time. It was the best time many of them ever had.

Then Wednesday they mourned another of them, the biggest name of them all.

And like with the others, it's too soon.

Well, shit.

QuoteTerrell Suggs tears Achilles

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles tendon and likely will miss the 2012 season.

In texts to ESPN, Suggs said he suffered the injury Saturday, "running my condition test." He denied that the injury happened playing basketball, as some sources had told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Other sources had told Schefter that the injury happened during the conditioning test, as Suggs maintains.

Surgery is scheduled for next week, the sources said. The Ravens do not know if Suggs' Achilles tendon is partially or fully torn as their doctors have not seen the results of Suggs' MRI yet. The team is sending Suggs to see a specialist early next week to help make that determination.

Also, one source who has spoken with Suggs said he thinks he will be able to come back in October. However, the average return to the field by NFL players who have torn their Achilles is 11 months, according to a study presented at the American Academy Orthopedic Surgeons in 2006.

Suggs was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year after last season, in which he had 70 tackles, including 14 sacks, and was a threat all over the field from his hybrid linebacker-end position. He also forced seven fumbles and had two interceptions, helping the Ravens, which boasted the No. 3 overall defense, win the AFC North and advance to the AFC Championship Game.

Suggs was the only player last season to record at least five sacks, five passes defensed and five forced fumbles.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome told ESPN's Josina Anderson that the team found out about Suggs' injury earlier this week.

"We found out about it on Monday. He (Suggs) said he would be visiting with a specialist early next week," Newsome told ESPN.

A statement released by the Ravens said: "We are in contact with Terrell. He will see a specialist early next week and we'll know more at that time."

In his nine-year career, Suggs had only missed three games.

Replacing Suggs will be a challenge. The Ravens drafted former Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw but he is expected to replace outside linebacker Jarret Johnson, who signed with the San Diego Chargers. Candidates to take over Suggs' spot are Paul Kruger, Sergio Kindle and Michael McAdoo.

Yowch.  Nothing wrong if it had occurred while playing basketball IMO.  Gotta stay in shape during the off-season somehow.

The Bengals have their own basketball court in Paul Brown Stadium, though I've only seen it used for cheerleader practice and as a meeting place for all the cops on duty before home games.

Yup.  Their last, best shot was last season, falling right out of Lee Evans' mitts.
This year, the whole program's gonna take a step back.

Unless Flacco and the new offense goes total Curtis LeMay ape-shit and starts racking up 5 touchdowns a game, I simply don't see anything beyond a Wild Card one-and-done.

Quote from: Neil on May 02, 2012, 08:12:30 PM
Unless Goodell manages to demolish the popularity of the NFL, I think that Bettman's crown is secure.

Yeah, the suspensions seem a little bit over the top, especially Vilma's.  They're framing this as a player safety issue, but it's really a league rule issue with non-contract bonuses.

This isn't a league rules issue.  It's a "what is the greatest financial threat to the NFL" issue and the greatest financial threat to the NFL is lawsuits from former players suing the NFL for not doing enough to keep them safe, within reason, while playing.  There are currently more than 1,500 players who are suing the NFL in multiple lawsuits (http://www.wmur.com/sports/30997944/detail.html).  If those lawsuits are successful the NFL is going to be on the hook for a lot of dollars.  Team bounty programs fly in the face of all proper due diligence towards safety that the NFL could provide its players and Goodell is right to drop the hammer on them hard.

I think Cam is on double-secret probation with Biscotti, similar to the way he put Billick on probation going into his 2nd to last season.
But there's a new card in the mix:  Jim Caldwell as Assistant Coach/QB Coach.  I think he's going to have a lot more swag with the offense than people think;  particularly when it comes to Flacco, who is no Cam fan.

QuoteRavens can absorb loss of Terrell Suggs
By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

As soon as word spread about Terrell Suggs tearing his Achilles tendon, you could hear the collective cries from Ravens Nation. It's very easy to tear up the playoff tickets right now or want to hand over the AFC North title to the Steelers. But losing Suggs doesn't mean the Ravens should lose hope on the season.

There's no question that it will be difficult to replace Suggs, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and career franchise leader in sacks, whether it's for the entire season or a good chunk of it. He was all over the field in 2011, becoming the only player last season to record at least five sacks, five passes defensed and five forced fumbles.

The Ravens, though, can overcome Suggs' absence. Why? Because they've done this before.

In 2010, safety Ed Reed spent the first six weeks on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after offseason hip surgery. Baltimore went 4-2 without him.

Last season, linebacker Ray Lewis was sidelined for four games with a toe injury. The Ravens were 4-0 without Lewis, including victories over San Francisco and Cincinnati.

That's 8-2 when the Ravens didn't have two future Hall of Fame defenders in the lineup. There is an argument that playing without Suggs is different. Lewis and Reed aren't in the prime of their careers, and Suggs is just hitting his stride at age 29.

But there's another argument that Suggs wasn't the most valuable player on the Ravens last season, just the most timely one. Suggs recorded nine sacks and five forced fumbles in three games (season opener against Pittsburgh, Thanksgiving night against San Francisco and Dec. 11 game against Indianapolis). For the other 13 games, he managed the rather ordinary numbers of five sacks and two forced fumbles.

This isn't to minimize Suggs' talent. He always draws the most attention from offenses, which frees up his teammates to make plays. He's a tone-setter in terms of his emotional play. He's up there with the best pass-rushers in the game right now. Left tackles will sleep a lot better knowing Suggs won't be on the field for an extended period. But the statistics from last season show that the Ravens don't need Suggs to make plays in order for them to win.

The challenge is replacing Suggs' presence in the pass rush, especially this season. Look at the quarterbacks on Baltimore's schedule: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Michael Vick, Tony Romo, Carson Palmer and Matt Schaub. This is the season when the Ravens needed Suggs the most.

The Ravens need Paul Kruger (career-high five sacks last season) to continue his progression. They need Haloti Ngata (five sacks) to collapse the middle of the line. They need Pernell McPhee (six sacks) to avoid a sophomore slump. They need Sergio Kindle to get on the field. And they need first-round pick Courtney Upshaw (15.5 sacks past two seasons at Alabama) to make an immediate impact.

Baltimore is a stronger and more fearsome defense with Suggs chasing down quarterbacks. But the Ravens' defense won't flinch without him.

Amen.  And as long as Ray Ray treads upon this earth, this team's defense will improvise, adapt and overcome.  It's what they do.

If the defensive players would stop leading with their fucking heads, a lot of these concussions would never have happened.  That used to not be such a big issue.  The league needs to step up fines for spearing and/or find other ways to discourage it.

Back in my glory days of junior high football, the 15 yard penalty was enough to make us too afraid to spear someone.

It looked like his ankle was legitimately hurt in Cleveland.  Then again, your theory has something to it.  If he was legitimately damaged, then there's no way Tomlin could justify not taking him out, given what an investment he is.

I think the NFL is going to be in a heap of trouble in the years to come as the science on concussions becomes more and more known.  If the evidence continues to show that it's not even concussions themselves, but the repeated sub-concussive blows to the head that lead to these problems football could start to look as barbaric as dog fighting.

Hockey has similar problems, but at least it seems that if the league was serious they could take out anything that might cause blows to the head and still be the same sport.  For the NFL to do so it would have to convert to touch football.

Just came across some pretty disturbing stats.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/football/bombers/players-slowly-killing-themselves-119235029.html

Quote...

Next we were shown that Time Magazine had produced a story about football called The Most Dangerous Game, and the author, Sean Gregory, concluded that, "Men between the ages of 30 and 49 have a one in a thousand chance of being diagnosed with dementia, Alzheimers, or another memory related disease. An NFL retiree has a one in fifty-three chance of receiving the same diagnosis." This was around the moment in Las Vegas where a collective 'thunk' was heard as all of our jaws hit the floor. These are not CFL statistics, but you would have to be pretty naive to think that these facts do not apply to our game as well.

By this point, morale was already at an all time low at Planet Hollywood, but then, if you can imagine, things got worse as we were shown the findings by Michael Glueck M.D. and Robert Cihak M.D. who wrote, "It is not a widely disseminated, downloaded or discussed fact that the average life expectancy for all pro football players, including all positions and backgrounds, is 55 years. Several insurance carriers say it is 51 years." According to this math, if I can live for another 19 years I will be beating the average! (Insert false enthusiasm here.)

Vilma must be completely retarded.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/17/vilma-sues-goodell-for-defamation/related/

QuoteVilma sues Goodell for defamation
Posted by Mike Florio on May 17, 2012, 3:33 PM EDT
Jonathan Vilma Portrait Shoot Getty Images

Like so many other developments in the Saints' bounty drama, the latest one has arrived out of the blue, without warning.

During last Friday's PFT Live, lawyer Peter Ginsberg vaguely hinted at additional legal action that he may be taking on behalf of Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma.  But there was no indication that Vilma would file a lawsuit against NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

That's precisely what Vilma has done.  It's Vilma v. Goodell, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, the federal court that encompasses New Orleans.

As specified in paragraph 1 on the complaint, the claim is defamation, which means that Vilma contends Goodell lied about Vilma when making public statements about Vilma's role in the alleged bounty program.

What follows over the next 112 numbered paragraphs are a variety of specific allegations that, in short, claim the Commissioner has been untruthful about Vilma's involvement in the bounty program, and that Vilma never "pledged" and "never paid, or intended to pay" $10,000 or any amount of money as an incentive to knock Brett Favre or Kurt Warner out of 2009 playoff games, or any other player in any other game.

Curiously, Vilma never says that he never "offered" to pay $10,000 as an incentive to knock Brett Favre or Kurt Warner or anyone else out of any games.  The use of the phrase "never paid, or intended to pay" copies the content of Vilma's May 2 statement, which seemed to dance around the possibility that Vilma, perhaps in the heat of the moment, made a hollow offer to pay the money as part of an exercise in standard pregame hyperbole.

Above all else, the lawsuit appears to be a mechanism for forcing the NFL to put the evidence against Vilma on the table.  Since truth is an absolute defense to any defamation claim, Goodell can vindicate himself by offering up proof to support the statements he has made.
