What a bunch of whiners, the shirt's harmless.

'Lesbians are cool' T-shirt puts Massachusetts school in national spotlight

By msnbc.com staff
A Massachusetts high school has set off a national free speech debate after a student was reprimanded for wearing a T-shirt that proclaimed, "All the Cool Girls Are Lesbians."

The student, who hasn't been publicly identified, complained in a letter to Judith Flanagan Kennedy, chairwoman of the Lynn, Mass., School Committee — and mayor of the town — that in January, she was asked by a vice principal to cover up the T-shirt and never wear it again, the Lynn Daily Item reported.

In the letter, as quoted by the Daily Item, the student said a teacher referred her to a vice principal because of the T-shirt. The vice principal agreed with the teacher that the shirt was inappropriate "because it's political and offensive to some people," the student said she was told.

"Well, frankly I'm the one who feels offended," she wrote in the letter to Kennedy, adding: "The word lesbian is not inappropriate. Saying it is, is calling homosexuality inappropriate."

Kennedy agreed with her.

Kennedy told members of the School Committee at its meeting last week that she had done some legal research, "and I believe she is right."

The school's dress code prohibits clothing that depicts weapons, drugs or alcohol, or anything considered disruptive, but it doesn't specify gender issues, Kennedy said. The school has a Gay/Straight Alliance, demonstrating its tolerance for such expressions, she said.

The debate over such expressions quickly spread beyond Lynn, a city of 90,000 about 20 miles northeast of Boston, much of it on pro-gay-rights sites like SheWired and The Advocate.

"Truth hurts...," one commenter wrote on SheWired's Facebook page, while another said she "would love to get my hands on a tshirt lol."

But Dallas Chambers, a program director at radio station KISS-FM in Amarillo, Texas, took the side of the assistant principal, writing on the station's Web site that "we have a ton of idiots in our world, students need to be paying attention in class! Not being distracted by naive little girls that think it's cool to be a lesbian."

Jeanne Sager, a blogger for CafeMom, also objected, but on different grounds:

"I'm raising a kid in a pro-gay rights household. That means she's learned that gay kids are just like her. They're equal," she wrote under the headline "Student's 'All Cool Girls Are Lesbians' Shirt Was Way Out of Line."

"What doesn't it mean?" she asked. "That gay kids are 'cooler' than her any more than it means she's cooler than the gay kids."

Since it would generally be socially unacceptable to wear a t-shirt saying 'All the cool girls are heterosexual' I agree that this shirt sends a wrong message.

I don't really see how that's true.  Next up will you be telling us that it is problematic that you can't say white pride without being racist?

A somewhat tough position for the principal or vice-principal, since either telling the student to change the shirt or allowing her to wear it (thus also possibly opening the door to similar or even "edgier" shirts worn by her or other students) both open the door to complaints from the "outrage police" on either side of the spectrum.  However, in my view, the vice-principal made the wrong decision for a variety of reasons.

How do you know the person wearing the shirt was a lesbian?  He/she might have just been a fan.

No stupid nonsense being made into big controversies.

Heck, this is Massachusetts. I'd assume the only controversial issue would be the kids NOT wearing a t-shirt like this.  ;)

You presume that there's no controversy if the school looks the other way. That's not always the case.

I guess a good example, and there were similar things happening at least once a semester it seemed, was this incident where this one girl wrote this hilariously racist article in the school...um...newspaper...whatever the student publication was.  And so we all had to endure all this training and assemblies about combatting racism and it was on the news and all this ridiculous over the top stuff.  I mean it was this one girls problem, but the presumption was if one kid did it was this big serious school wide problem.  Now probably that is the right response for a big bureaucratic school district to make, and indeed probably the one they are capable of, but man it was tiresome.  As soon as one idiot did something stupid I knew we were all in for it.

Two years later some boy wrote a hilariously sexist article in the student publication and we got to do the whole thing all over again.  And of course it was likely in both cases the kids were doing it primarily to trigger this exact response from the adults.  Granted in this particular case the shirt wearer may not have been trolling and there was nothing that bad about her shirt but hey in my school they also banned all playing cards and came down hard on anybody with cards because, get this, a group of guys was found gambling on craps in the bathroom.  And a big deal was made about gambling in schools.

I think you have a wrong perspective, Valmy. School is not supposed to be that laissez-faire free market of ideas - the problem here is not that the school took action about something that it found offensive but that the school found a t-shirt like this offensive.

Yep.  The policy being enforced was apparently: "The school's dress code prohibits clothing that depicts weapons, drugs or alcohol, or anything considered disruptive".

That leaves open the question dispruptive to what.  The educational experience?  Dont see how that could be.

A few short years ago several public schools were experimenting with uniforms.  No clue if any kept them.  But some uniforms were as simple as a plain white shirt and black pants.

Hahaha. That's hardly "sexualized" compared to some of the outfits that girls get away with in schools these days.  I'm pretty sure that plenty of kids still wear sassy hot-topic shirts (as they certainly aren't for the older crowd) but I guess one can only get away with it if you stay away from the taboo subject of homosexuality.

I'll agree there's probably something of a disconnect.  A high school girl could probably get away with wearing a very low cut top, but if she wore a t-shirt that didn't show any cleavage whatsoever but merely said something sassy about boobs would probably be asked to change.  Or so I would imagine - I went to high school 20 years ago, and even then it was all-boys with a dress code.

I don't know. Massachusetts has had gay marriage for quite some time already, so this joke tee should hardly be controversial.

Meh, kids don't have the right to be controversial.
Agreed.  Get a uniform <_<

Nope.  But how is that different from, say, a Gay Pride t-shirt?

I bet if she wore a shirt implying non-Christians are going to hell she would be asked to change.

Maybe.  Or maybe it would launch a big freaking deal over religion in schools.  I bet plenty of kids came to school with shirts that said similar stuff to hers in schools before and nothing happened.

In fact I can see it now 'we felt that shirt was offensive to our Jewish and Muslims kids so I asked the student to refrain from wearing Christian shirts' *cue Christians are persecuted shit storm*

No one protested my "Too many Christians, too few lions shirt" but I didn't wear it often. -_-

I remember back in the mid 80's, we did have a kid in high school suspended for wearing the infamous Hitler World Tour concert T-shirt, but it was his fault. He was told not to wear it again, and there he was, showing up the next week in it.
That was some serious drama in 1986, man.

A buddy of mine considered getting this tshirt...pretty much just to wear while working out at the gym on base, but decided that the likelyhood of some higher-ranking NCO or officer getting butt-hurt over it would be too high.  :P

I bet if she wore a shirt implying non-Christians are going to hell she would be asked to change.

I think "Jesus loves you" would be pretty offensive - I for one wouldn't want some bearded homeless person in the street telling me he loves me - especially if he looked 2000 years old and/or like he came back from dead.

I had a bearded homeless person shamble up to me on the street and announce to me, in a confidential voice, "I'm going to give up sex for awhile" before shambling away.

My personal favorite "tour" T-shirt is this one that I got from my stepmother:

My Western Civ professor got such a big kick out of it that it got turned into an extra credit question on one of my tests.

I would have flunked the wearer of that shirt.

The tour started in the Crimea, then to Sicily, and Italy before it really caught on.
