Baseball: Mr. Baseball
Basketball: Hoosiers. The best overall sports movie ever. Amen.
American Football: they're all kind of weak. Anyone who says Any Given Sunday deserves a punch in the package.
Soccer: another weak field. Maybe that one in the POW camp with Pele? I haven't seen it.
Track and Field: Chariots of Fire.

There are a couple of recent Spanish comedies/dramedies around soccer, but I don't expect anyone from out of the country to see them.
- Días de fútbol is about a group of guys in their 30s, down on their collective luck, that decide to recreate the amateur team they were part of when they were kids in order to take out their frustrations.
- El penalty más largo del mundo is about the reserve goalkeeper of a team at the lowest division in the league, who in the last game of the season, with the team facing promotion if they don't loose the last game, has to enter the game when the first keeper is injured and is afterwards signalled a penalty against his team at the last minute of the game. After a pitch invasion the match is postponed a week, and will be re-started with the penalty kick one week afterwards.

So what's a sport movie for you, then? One that deals strictly with the sport part of the deal? I think you'll struggle to find movies that don't give at least partial thought to the characters outside the pitch.

Raging Bull is as much a biopic as
Ali. And
The Great White Hope falls into the "based on a true story" category--it's kind of about Jack Johnson, except they refer to him as Jack Jefferson. I think I'd still consider all 3 to be within the category of sports movies as well, though.

WOMEN WEAKEN LEGS.
Rugby - This Sporting Life
Boxing - lots of good ones out there, can't choose
American Football - I liked 'Any Given Sunday', 'Leatherheads' was amusing and I liked the attempt to capture the early games chaotic beginnings. I seem to recall 'The Longest Yard' was good.
Athletics - hmm, can't think of anything, though as a piece of fantasy 'Olympia' would be hard to beat, for all the wrong reasons.
Cycling - 'The Flying Scotsman' the Graeme Obree story.
Football - 'When Saturday Comes' .
I think the reason there aren't many quality football films is perhaps because the game itself shares some of the characteristics of a movie; 90 minutes in length plus a short half-time break means it's typically the length of a film. The limited number of players, a notional fixed 11 per side, means it doesn't suffer from the huge squads American football does, and of those most play rather workman like roles, so often in a good football game the drama might revolve around a fairly limited number of players, so that they might equate to the central characters in a movie. And sometimes the it comes down to a conflict between just two leading players.
Actually the best illustration I've found in films, about the reality of football, it's following and tribalism, is in this trivia about a film called 'A Shot At Glory' which sound interesting, but this is what real football can be about:
Quote'Ally McCoist, who plays a former Celtic player is, in real life, a former Rangers player, McCoist is now in actual fact the Rangers No 2 coach. They actually super-impose Celtic colors on to his blue Rangers shirts. He wouldn't wear a real Celtic shirt for the film.
And the guy isn't some bigoted Neanderthal, he's quite a bright, rather humorous man, but for him the above is beyond the Pale.
Best bike racing movie is that one about the Indiana townies beating the frat boys, the one with the young Dennis Quaid. Cutters' Way? Breaking Away?

Either The Damned United or Fever Pitch. Bend it like Beckham afterwards.
As for other sports, you have Invictus (rugby), Slapshot (Ice hockey), The Wrestler (pro wrestling), Nacho Libre (lucha libre, and based on a real story ), Wimbledon (tennis), Caddyshack (golf)...
there is one about bringing Leeds? or some other club in Leeds in to the premier in the 70s..
And I think its called Hooligan about.. hooligans.._p

Rugby - This Sporting Life
Great film.
Give
Invictus a try :)
The Damned United was a great football film too.
For cycling I enjoyed
Breaking Away but I daren't watch it these days, I suspect it's lost much of its charm.
Four Minutes about Roger Bannister was rather enjoyable and informative.
Looking For Eric, which to be fair was more about the spirit of fandom rather than football itself, but very funny! Plus added Cantona :mmm:
Actually, I'm surprised at how many sports films I've actually seen :hmm:
Football: There's Only One Jimmy Grimble, closely followed by the Damned United.
Best football scene - Kes followed (quite a long way beyond) by Gregory's Girl.
Escape to Victory (as we call Victory) is what Orwell might have called a good bad film. You know it's shit, but it's enjoyable anyway.
There are very few cricket films but Wondrous Oblivian is decent. I couldn't sit through Lagaan.
Boxing - obv Raging Bull, followed by Cinderella Man. The Rocky films are fine apart from the boxing. When We Were Kings is fantastic is docs are allowed.
Baseball: Bull Durham (98%) with The Natural (82%) a close second
Rugby: Invictus (75%)
US Football: Rudy (84%)
Soccer: Bend it like Beckham (85%) (it is a sad state of affairs when the only good soccer movie is about girls soccer)
Ice Hockey: Miracle (80%) (don't usually give a shit about hockey, but for 90 minutes I did)
Best sports movie regardless of sport?
Chariots of Fire (87%)
(numbers are from rotten tomatos)
Forgot about Damned United. That is pretty good too. But I stand by Basset being very good.
I find it interesting Viking's favorite is the one about a Christian missionary. :hmm:

And people are, like, what about The Price Is Right? That came on at 11am, it was good for a mindless hour, right?
Dude, I'm staying home from school specifically because I don't want to deal with math. And who gives a fuck about the actual retail cost of Turtle Wax and Rice-A-Roni, The San Francisco Treat.
I liked that one game with the little mountain climber dude and the yodeling.

FLASHBACKS. :bleeding:
Flashbacks? *checks* Yep, they're still doing that game today.
I remember watching all those assorted courtroom soap operas, i.e. Divorce Court.
Also, Sale of the Century, Press Your Luck, Tic-Tac-Dough and that other one Alex Trebeck did (where the prize was the cheapest possible compact cars on the market).

I don't hate believers. I merely choose to mock them if they think that their religion is to affect anything other than their own personal lives.

Hell, if we're going to include curling...
Golf = Caddyshack
Bowling = The Big Lebowski
Yachting = Dead Calm
Has anyone even made a movie on Tennis? :P

As a curling afficianado I wanted to say that - but honestly it was a very bad movie. :(
I'll just resign myself to curling every week, without a major motion picture to inspire me.

Nobody said anything about that. Some faggit brought it up, and it still doesn't fucking count.

I think the film has to meet at least some kind of quality threshold.

The brilliant School for Scoundrels (an Ealing comedy). Well it's got as much tennis in it as Leobowski has bowling.

I liked Happy Gilmore better. It's a really weak field.
Hockey: Slaphot
Baseball: Bull Durham
Soccer/football: The Damned United
American Football: Semi Tough (original Burt Reynolds version)
Basketball: Love & Basketball
