Not even the basketball game in Meatballs can compare to the drubbing that the Pikeville (Ky.) Independent Middle School boys handed to Kimper (Ky.) Elementary and Middle School at the Pike County Preseason Tournament recently. After racing to a 70-0 halftime lead (yep), Pikeville eventually won, 100-2. As a result of the blowout, reports began flying that the school district's superintendent and school board might cancel the remainder of Pikeville's season for poor sportsmanship. Those rumors were not true, however.

This unintentional comedy from Scouts Focus is the funniest thing I've read today:
[Pikeville coach Bryan] Johnson told Scouts Focus that he received "a lot of flack" from the 100-2 victory through various online and local mediums. Johnson told Scouts Focus that these mediums attempted to stir controversy, which he feels unjustified under the extenuating set of the circumstances.
Johnson told Scouts Focus that he left his starters in for only 1:48 where they pressed until the lead blossomed to 25-0. Pikeville then proceeded to back up into a 2-3 zone defense for the rest of the half where they ballooned to an unheard of 70-0 lead. Johnson reinserted his starters in the beginning of the second half where he instructed his team to stop playing defense and coax Kimper into scoring. Johnson told Scouts Focus that he had two clear options; to stall the ball or keep playing. Johnson stressed that his goal was to not embarrass any of the opposing kids. Pikeville's attempts of allowing Kimper to score proved fruitless. Johnson told Scouts Focus that the opposition could not hit any of the many open threes or layups they were coaxed freely into pursuing. Kimper did score on a last second lay-in by 6'0 8th grader Adam Thacker.

But the question remains: as a coach, what do you do when you're ahead 25-0 after 1:48 of the first quarter? And 70-0 at halftime? Remember, you're dealing with kids who haven't even reached high school. Should Pikeville be disciplined for, basically, pounding on a weak kid?
"6'0 8th grader Adam Thacker"? wtf you have a 6' 8th grader and you can't win or at least get more then 2? Also, kid should see a doctor.
When I played basketball I managed to score one basket. Unfortunately It was on the wrong side of the court. True story. They didn't really want me to play in the school sports after that. I would lose one-on-one games with the kid with one arm.

It occurs to me you could create a really funny montage of Raz failing at sports. Getting cracked in the head with a fly ball, being beaned, shooting a basket into the wrong side of the court, bowling an 11, coming in last in every race, punching a guy in football (the guy looked like he was going to hit me!), etc.

Reminds me of a friend of mine. I was watching him bowl against a mutual friend and there was this cute little four year old girl bowling with her mom, using the gutter guards obviously. When my friends' game was over, I peaked at the little girl's final score, 76. My friend scored 75. The mom laughed and praised her daughter and the little girl shook my friend's hand trying to comfort his bruised ego. We gave him shit forever after that.
Your friend still bowls better than the President and me. :blush:

You must have gone to a school with very short kids. 6' isnt that tall for a kid in grade 8. I had 4 kids 6 feet or taller on the grade 8 team I coached last year.
I was thinking the same thing. By 8th grade you always have a few kids who early bloomers.
Bet those kids are really kicking themselves. So near to winning by 100 and yet they fail.

Meh, I'm pretty sure I wasn't too far off that when I was in year 8. As said some kids get their growth in early.

I got the fuck beaten out of me the last time I bowled by an eleven year old girl. But she was actually wicked good; I think her first game was about 200.

Your cripple analogy doesn't work, because this "cripple" walked into the game challenging his oponent.

I agree that, for men who are secure in our masculinity (and maybe some others, but I wouldn't know about them), winning is only impressive if winning was in doubt.

Yeah, coaching against a much weaker opponent is one of the hardest things to do as a coach. You need to lay off without turning the experience negative for everyone.
When faced with this situation - say up 30 or so, on offense I put in a five pass rule before a shot so the kids treat it as a practice scrimmage where they are forced to run the offence and no fast breaks are allowed. On defence no press, no double teams and no denials on the entry pass - which basically just turns the defensive end into a box out drill.
The other team might still get blown out simply because they cant shoot or cant take the ball to the basket very well but at least they get a sense of having played in the game and our kids get some practice running the offense and rebounding.
There is certainly no joy in "winning" such games. I would much rather play against someone better than us. The chance of improving is greater and winning such a game can be very gratifying.
There is always joy in winning.
