Thoughs?
Still Sim City 4?
I'm tried Cities XL and...yeah. Not so great.
Dwarf Fortress
simcity 4 upgraded with the NAM, the CAM, the RHW and what not.
I can't figure out how to play Dwarf Fortress.

Congrats! Apparently, you have a life!
It's not hard once you get the basic stuff down.
My vote is for Pharaoh or Caesar III.

Yeah but unfortunately that makes it not for casual pickup later as one is likely to forgot the controls/interface by one's next play.

Eh. I have had breaks in playing DF for almost a year (and a new version to boot) and had no problem remembering the controls.
I'm happy for you?

Seriously. I learned by watching YouTube videos.
I just read the wiki, it spells out things pretty well. Also using a graphic set helped with determining what the fuck everything is.

Pharaoh was my favorite.
What's the best city builder without any sci-fi shit?
Are there any good city builders with sci-fi shit?

I haven't played Pharaoh in so long - I think I'll dig up a copy and install it. In the same vein there was also 'Emperor" (Chinese theme) and Zeus (Greek theme).

Seconded, it still is the best out there.
Zeus and the Poseidon expansion were good, too, and Tropico was fun.

I reinstalled SC4 recently. Now I just need to figure out how to get a bunch of the neat new buildings added in easily.

Clearly you were high on painkillers. That shit gets old fast.
Cities XL 2012 was that bad?
it wasn't awful but it was very simplistic. Lots of filling your town with skate parks and that kinda thing

Why would you want to do such a terrible thing? Fill your town with skate parks? That has a strong chance of attracting skaters.
And hipsters.

Hmmm. You could build all the coffee shops, skate parks, and quirky used bookstores in one area, then wall it off. Then press one of those disaster buttons and have a tornado or Godzilla attack.
I liked the Caesar games, and the ones that came after by the same company - Pharoah, Chinese city builder. Pharoah and Caesar were my favorites.
I wanted to like all those Roman city builders, but they insist throwing in a war element. If I wanted that I'd play R:TW.
I used to love Caeser 2....but mostly for the provincial and wee little army bits. And the way you grew the empire along with some rival guy.

One of the very few entertainment buildings available iirc.
I loved Caesar too, until they came up with the terrible random walker idea. Then it just became about building the city in a way to best control the people walking around aimlessly, which completely turned everything on its head.
