I've got to pick them. My two QBs are Hasselbeck and Grossman. Given that Tennessee is playing Baltimore and Washington is playing Arizona it's obvious who I have to start.

This is a reply to Tim, who is wrong about some things:

I'm not sold on Chicago yet, and I think New Orleans can take them.  It's had to say, because so much depends on which Cutler shows up, but we know which Drew Brees is going to show up, the totally awesome one.  If he can get just a little bit of help and tackling from the defence, he'll beat the Bears single-handed.

Jacksonville will not beat the Jets, mostly because Jacksonville sucks.  Their one good player is an RB, against a Jets team who loves to stuff the run.  Their QB is a scrub who is starting because David Gerrard was going to make a lot of money this year and the owners would rather lose cheap then win.  You're letting your Patriotardism run away with you.  You'd probably pick Boise State against the Jets.  Sanchez isn't elite or anything, but a supporting team like that around him, he doesn't really have to be.

Washington - Arizona will be interesting.  On the one hand, Arizona can't stop anyone or anything.  On the other hand, everyone knows the Sex Cannon.

I wouldn't bet on Cleveland to beat Indy.  Sure, they got spanked by the Texans, but the Texans are awesome.  The Browns lost to the Bengals.  The Colts still have plenty of talent, and they're only going to get better.  The Colts will have problems with preparation and coaching, since the de facto head coach is on the bench.

San Diego might just beat New England in the Soft Teams With Whiny, Homo Quarterbacks Bowl.

Interesting tidbit I picked up today, this week's schedule is extremely rare: no divisional match-ups at all.  Week 4 is the same.  They did it intentionally so if the lockout continued into the season they could very easily drop those two weeks from the schedule without having much of an effect on the overall season schedule.   :smarty:

I don't see the Seahawks out-physicalling the Steelers, and they don't have the tools to beat them with precision.  They don't have good receivers, they don't have a good quarterback, and their running back situation is passable at best.  Unless Roethlisberger was reduced to retardation by the pounding he took last week, they won't need the refs for this one like they did in '05.

Mind you, the Seahawks must have known it was coming.  Surely the fans knew that they wouldn't be allowed to mess up the 'Bus wins at home' narrative, anymore than the Raiders were permitted to stop the victory of patriotism after 9/11.

Looks like Dalton is Probable as well.  Which is nice because I don't have any idea who the emergency backup would be if Dalton couldn't play & Gradkowski gets knocked out of the game Sunday.

Oh, yeah, it's going to be brutal (just check out the betting line). Jackson will be lucky if he retains the use of his extremities afterward. Adding the ref is just rubbing salt in the wound.

There aren't many times I would give up double digits in a point spread in an NFL game but this is one where I would.  The Steelers are gonna hammer the Seachickens.

Yeah, there isn't a lot of give on that linebacker corps for injuries, especially with injuries to DBs requiring them to call a guy up.  They weren't going to cut Kindle, even though Phillips is probably more of an impact player right now.  We'll see, but Kindle is starting to look like he might be a candidate to play for the Bengals.

Kruger's conversion to LB from DE hasn't helped those like Phillips on the outside looking in, either.  Quite frankly, they're too stacked, and Phillips is a typical 3-4 ILB on a team with a lot of 3-4 ILB talent.

Yeah, no shit.  McClain, Ellerbe and Ayanbedejo are all there fighting for the honour of playing next to Ray Lewis.  I'd be surprised if Phillips cleared waivers though.

Well, it was certainly impressive, but I defer judgement until Week 7 or 8.  That said, the last time that the Ravens blew the Steelers up like this, they finished 13-3.

Edit:  Make that Week 9, because that's the last competitive game that the Ravens have this year other than San Diego.

Hey Neil: DBs Chris Carr and uberdraft pick Jimmy Smith are listed as out, so expect Kenny Britt to have a possibly decent day.  Ben Grubbs is doubtful, so look for Andre Gurode to make it into the line-up for the first time, but as a guard fill-in for Grubbs, not center.

I'm taking my nieces to The Lion King in 3D at 12:40, so I'm Tivoing the game, and keeping myself in OPSEC mode until I get home.  So don't tell me what the score is.

Yeah, Britt will have a good game provided that Hasselbeck doesn't have one of those games.  The Grubbs injury has been worrying me ever since the afterglow of the Pittsburgh win wore off around Thursday or so.  I feel good about Gurode stepping in, even if he's not quite the mauler that Grubbs is he's a smart guy who knows how to block, but I just wish that the starters had more time to gel.

So, I promise not to text you around 4pm or so your time with something like '31-14 lololololol'.

This is for all the young 'uns and Timmaytards

QuoteLast weekend in the first round of the 2011 regular season games, there were 14 quarterbacks who passed for over 300 yards, the most ever in NFL history. Interesting is that only eight of those 14 were on the winning team in the games, led by New England Patriots QB Tm Brady and his insane 517 yards, including that amazing 99 yard TD pass/run to WR Wes Welker.

In 1977, there were only five 300-yard passing game in the entire season. Former Baltimore Colts QB Bert Jones actually had two of those five games, with 340 yards on December 18, 1977 and 322 yards on November 20, 1977. The most yardage any QB threw for in 1977 was 396 yards by New York Jets QB Richard Todd on October 23, 1977. Noted is that Todd's total as the highest shows there were zero 400-yard passing games in the NFL in 1977, while there were four in the first week of the 2011 season.

Running backs were better in 1977, too.

No illegal contact rule in '77 either, which is probably why they chose that year for the comparison.

The Texans offense looks kinda sloppy, but they've produced 219 offensive yards in the first half, so it can't be TOO bad.   :hmm:  They're kinda screwing around in the redzone and only have one TD in four trips (3 FGs), so maybe that's where the impression comes from.  16-3 at the half.

Well, they were going to make sure Chris Johnson wasn't going to stop them, so they let Matt Hasselbeck do it.  Britt was a beast, and it's inexusable how often they let the receivers get behind them.  Absolutely no pass rush, and no sacks.  Unbelievable.

Poor Joe didn't have time to breathe, and the line never really opened any lanes for the running game.  Whether that was because Ben Grubbs was a scratch, I don't know.  But it was an ugly performance by the offensive line.

Oh, and fucking Buffalo fucking rocks.  Told you the Joe Ferguson uniforms were going to bring back the mojo.

The Texans offense isn't even really moving the ball anymore, and they really do look like shit.  Anytime they have even a remotely big play, they commit some sort of penalty and it puts them in a hole.  Every other time, they're getting pushed around and aren't going anywhere.   Miami just kicked a FG to make it 16-13 now.

Daniel Manning is an interesting kickoff returner though.  It's not often you see one of those guys put their head down and run over a coverage player.

Despite my whining, the Texans win 23-13, going into the victory formation on Miami's 1.

Well, they were going to make sure Chris Johnson wasn't going to stop them, so they let Matt Hasselbeck do it.  Britt was a beast, and it's inexusable how often they let the receivers get behind them.  Absolutely no pass rush, and no sacks.  Unbelievable.
The coverage was a scheme problem.  I mean, I know the Ravens like to put their guys man-on-man and rely on their awesomeness to make plays, but against a guy like Britt and your two most physical corners hurt, that's just not going to work.  I also laughed at Joe's first pick, when they were trying to fake a stop-and-go, despite the fact that they had shown no desire to go deep all day and no ability to protect.  Who did they think they were fooling?

Damn that's a fun offense to watch.

The defense just gives up way too many fucking yards though. At least they can force turnovers though.

I will enjoy watching them choke in the playoffs.

Mile High is an awesome stadium, inside & out.  The coaches box was spacious.  I could actually watch the game rather than have to squint at a monitor like in Cleveland.   Denver does clutter up its pregame with those silly fan contests & whatnot but otherwise the stadium presentation is top notch.  The thing they did at halftime to honor Shannon Sharpe was cool.

The game itself was a letdown but at least they stayed in it.  Still, with all the Denver injuries (they had to bring Tebow in as a receiver FFS) this was a winnable game.

Dalton had mistakes here & there but overall was pretty damned impressive.  He had a 106 passer rating IIRC.  And AJ Green is a stud receiver.  Just wish the defense could have smacked Orton in the face like the Raiders did.

An interesting observation from the TV critic guy in The Sun:

QuoteBut there was another kind of PR-hype that is even more problematic as far as I am concerned. This one involved CBS Sports analyst Steve Tasker telling the audience what a fine and "honest" human being Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt is.

After a passing mention of Britt having had a "few scrapes with police," Tasker took it upon himself to tell viewers, "People get the wrong idea when they hear that."

Britt "could not have been more honest when he talked with us," Tasker said, after essentially serving as a character witness for the receiver.

Look, Britt was terrific on the field Sunday. But if you look him up online for 30 seconds  you will see that the "scrapes" he has had with police, include a felony charge and police allegations of car chases and drugs.

According to AP, the felony charge was later dropped after he entered a guilty plea to misdemeanors charges. This summer, he was arrested twice in New Jersey and had two arrest warrants out for him in Tennessee.

The NFL and CBS have been shameless in minimizing the criminal nature of players and coaches who drive drunk or stoned, assault people and/or resist arrest.

I understand how being honest about employing criminals might be a bad business strategy compared to falsely celebrating them as "honest" citizens and even heroes. But come on, show some sense of social responsibility.

If you want to ignore their "scrapes with police," fine -- ignore them. But don't minimize or try to apologize them away and then tell the young people in the audience what great and "honest" men these players who break the law are. There are societal consequences to that, and we are living with them every day in cities like Baltimore.

So, quit being apologists for people who break the law -- people who are by definition criminals.

With little more than an hour remaining before the deadline to accomplish one of their top priorities, the Ravens on Tuesday reached agreement on a five-year, $61 million deal with Haloti Ngata, ensuring that one of the game's most dominant interior linemen will be a fixture on their defense for the foreseeable future.

Which is why it's a bad idea to man the corners up on everybody unless you're getting a pass rush.  Actually, a pass rush without having to blitz seven guys would cover up a lot of problems.

No point blitzing against a West Coast gunslinger like Hasselbeck.  The ball's gone by the time you get there.  So the corners have to be able to step up.  They can't do that on crutches.
