Title: Find Your Spot
Post by: Caliga on June 28, 2011, 06:44:45 PM
http://www.findyourspot.com (http://www.findyourspot.com)

Every now and then I like to screw around with this website just to see if it gives me different results, since it never seems to change... but I guess I gradually have over time in terms of my preferences.  Princesca and I messed around with it a little bit before we relocated, but it really didn't factor into our plans at all.  I guess it might have if we had no family living in any one nucleus, though.

Anyway, here are my top 10 choices as of just now when I took it:

1. Ocala, Florida
2. Gainesville, Florida
3. Biloxi-Gulfport, Mississippi
4. Corpus Christi, Texas
5. Charleston, South Carolina
6. Galveston, Texas
7. Tallahassee, Florida
8. Deland, Florida
9. Savannah, Georgia
10. Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Of the cities listed, I've been to Gainesville, Charleston, Galveston, and Savannah, and thought they were all pretty awesome.

Also, my #11 was Houston, which I've been to a bunch of times and always liked visiting, but don't think I would live there--much too crowded. :yuk:

What a old looking site.

Albuquerque, New Mexico    The Pulse of New Mexico

Portland, Oregon    City of Roses

Hartford, Connecticut    The Insurance Capital

Providence, Rhode Island    New England's Best Kept Kept Secret

New Haven, Connecticut    Home of Yale University

Reno, Nevada    Biggest Little City in the World

Baltimore, Maryland    The Sparkling Harbor City

Santa Fe, New Mexico    Jewel of the Southwest

Boston, Massachusetts    America's Walking City

Medford, Oregon    Gateway to the Pacific Northwest

Washington, District of Columbia    The World's Greatest Capital

Worcester, Massachusetts    The Heart of the Commonwealth

So I say I hate heat and they put me in the freaking desert.

Fuck that noise. Forced me to feed it info about myself....Why hello Kai who resides in Columbus Ohio...

Then I got:
1) Norfolk, Virginia
2) Honolulu, Hawaii
3) San Diego
4) Orange County
5) Little Rock

Right. A list that has Honolulu, San Diego and Little Rock. That makes sense.

edit: later in my list it had Oakland and Baltimore. Yeah I don't think so bubs.

Albuquerque is definitely dry, but I don't think it's what most people would consider to be 'desert'... IIRC it's up in the mountains.

Or maybe that's Santa Fe. :hmm:

Either way, I've been to New Mexico and the bit of it in the Rockies doesn't feel like desert.

Houston #4, eh?   :yuk:  I like the pro football team there....and that's it.   Everything else I don't care about or actively don't like.  Good job, late 1990's website.  Pfft.

Edit: Corpus is down at #21.  We've been kinda considering moving there for a while, but are pretty...tied...to San Antonio.  Also I worry that I would get really bored there.

I gave up when I reached page 4 or so.  Most of the things mentioned aren't related to me at all.  I just want to live in a big city with a stable source of income, great restaurants, good doctors and an airport.  I don't care about the sports, culture and education stuff.  Or the weather.

I live in 3, yet I love blue skies.  I guess "prefer" is the wrong word.  More like, I am willing to give up blue clear skies in exchange for a humid, smog-infested cesspit.

And so the list goes on. I can sense a recurring pattern here.  :D

Myrtle Beach is the northern enclave of the Redneck Riviera.  It's the closest beach to here, so lots of Kentuckians go there for vacation.  I've never been there myself but I heard it's very overcrowded and full of 'family fun' stuff.  Atlantic Beach, which is pretty close to it, is supposed to be better from what I hear.  Also on your list, Princesca has relatives down in New Smyrna Beach and her grandfather used to go fishing down there all the time.  For some reason there are lots of shark attacks there. :hmm:

That's hilarious--my sister, who's working on the whole green self-sufficiency thing with her acreage the last two years, just got a dozen chickens this spring; bought a coop and everything.

Just got to figure out how to build an outdoor run with proper cover before the neighborhood hawks feel they just won the lunch Lotto.

Yeah, see... not only do we have hawks and vultures here, but our county has a feral cat 'problem' and, as if that isn't bad enough, freaking coyotes.

OTOH if we got chickens I'd have an excuse to practice on live targets with my rifle. :hmm:

Whoever made this site must have owned real estate in Little Rock.

Or perhaps it's a little known Mecca for languish-types.

Had to go back & check "major metropolitan area" in addition to the middle option to get some better-sized cities.  Also I think I maybe overstated my affinity for snow.

Carlisle, PA
Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
Duluth, MN
Albany, NY
Cleveland, OH
Cincinnati, OH
Grand Rapids, MI
Rochester, MN
Ann Arbor, MI

If I go back & add Rocky Mountains as one of my regions, Denver comes in first.  Which makes complete sense as it's about as close as you can get to my ideal city, or at least it would be if it weren't so far west.

:hmm: I don't think Carlisle is known for its great snows.  Technically it (just barely) has a humid subtropical climate.  My dad's family is from that area, btw.

Sheboygan, Wisconsin
Hartford, Connecticut
Worcester, Massachusetts
Duluth, Minnesota
Rochester, Minnesota
Carlisle, Pennsylvania
Altoona, Pennsylvania
Kenosha, Wisconsin
Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Ogden, Utah
Great Falls, Montana

There's about 5 more Wisconsin cities on the next two pages.  I'm a little disappointed I didn't get Fargo, ND, as I've actually thought of moving there.  Or Buffalo, NY for closer to home places.  Oh well.  An interesting little quiz.

I don't think Carlisle is known for anything I look for in a city.  My dad used to go there for car shows, but I never saw anything memorable the few times I drove through.

I quite like Fargo, and have visited there numerous times, but no way I'd want to live there.

Some of those Wisconsin towns are very nice though.  Duluth / Superior looked like a dump though.

What's wrong with Fargo?  I agree, a few of the Wisconsin places do look nice.  Time to look at jobs...

Too flat.  It is really, really, really flat.

I knew a guy who farmed south of Winnipeg who had a quarter section (square half-mile) with a total elevation range of 4 inches.

Goats are best for clearing underbrush.

Should go with llamas/alpacas.

Or the growing bison/buffalo industry.

Those things are a pain to work with. Are they growing again? They were huge 10-15 years ago.

Not nearly enough to make the price of bison meat reasonable at my local store

Seems like it's cheaper closer to the source-- another good reason for me to move out west.  I had a buffalo steak in Jackson Hole, WY back in 2007 that was one of the best steaks I ever had.

There are Ted's Montana Grill locations in Dublin, OH, Columbus, OH, and Lexington, KY.  Check them out next time you're in one of those towns. :mmm:
