How often are you guided by considerations that are not directly related to the quality and price of goods and services when making consumer choices?
This could include anything - from boycotting corporations that do something that you do not like (whether it is political donations, or being involved in worker rights abuse), or only choosing products with a certain certificate or badge (e.g. "kosher", "halal" or "fair trade"), to preferring to buy products manufactured locally/nationally as opposed to imports.
Let's assume for the sake of argument that a product's perceived "healthiness" (e.g. if a product is organic or not) is about quality, so does not count - but if you choose eggs from free range chickens because you oppose torture of chickens, or if you refuse to buy imported mineral water because of your concerns about the impact of transport on the environment, this counts for the purpose of this question..
Occasionally.
I do buy eggs from free-range chickens, buy fish with one of those sustainability badges, occasionally buy organic meat. But I don't buy say organic milk or müsli or juice. And while I would rather pick local fruits, there are just no kiwis or bananas from local production.
I don't buy fair trade as I think that's a scam that mainly benefits the first world vendors who give only very little of the price premium to the producers.
Religious labels like halal or kosher don't mean anything to me as I am not religious.
I take into account ideology when shopping where it's reasonable to do so.
Lately I've started a boycott of Norwegian dairy products since they are simply insane in their toll and subsidy policies, but of course this is both very difficult and in the grand scheme of things pointless. Basically, I try to buy milk, eggs and cheese while in Sweden but frankly unless I completely stop consuming milk, it's not going to be a very effective boycott. <_<
I go out of my way not to buy "ecological" since frankly it is a far more destructive way to produce foodstuffs than large-scale industrial farming.
I'm too poor to have morals.
I buy free range eggs (and chicken), only buy meat from a butcher (so I don't have a lot) and I check what fish's sustainable.
I like the idea of dolphin free tuna, but I think everything sold in the states these days is dolphin free so I don't have to check.
I used to be a twat and bought only the politically correct stuff.
Nowadays, calories count more than ecology when I choose my food. That said, I buy free-range when available and local veg during summer.
I do tend to buy clothes that aren't explicitly made in sweatshops and try to avoid Chinese-made stuff. On the other hand, the link between democratisation and increased wealth is at least a very strong correlation, so maybe buying stuff made by nimble little slave hands is a long-term investment in democracy. :hmm:
Being an informed customer is hard.

Never. I only consider price and quality. Beggers can't be choosers.

Miller is a wise man, and funny to boot.
Back on topic, the only thing that really factors in is hatred and brand-loyalty. For example, years ago Toyota ran an advertising campaign that tried to pump up Canadian nationalism with a little song (and in movie theatres, another heinous crime), and so I decided I would never own a Toyota. I don't like the pseudo-religious douchebaggery that surrounds certain Apple consumers, so I tend to avoid their products (although I did buy an iPod way back when). When I buy a car, I've had good experiences with Ford, so I buy more Fords.
Social consciousness shopping, eco-shopping, those sorts of things are for weirdos.

No, I'm not that stupid.
I know somebody that is one of those 'only buys food grown within 100 miles'. She is a total loon. I feel sorry for her kids.
I buy cheap Chinese goods and factory meats. :)
I buy a lot of my food from an upmarket workers co-operative ( :gasp: ) , it's Waitrose the UK's 5th largest supermarket group.
Actually the main reason is, though the prices are slightly higher, generally the food is better quality.
I avoid Tesco like the plague, not because they're 'the man', but in any given market it's always unwise to support or enable one player to gain a dominant position, which Tesco is coming close to achieving.
I buy only based on taste, calories, and price.
I do buy a lot of tea from a local tea store, but that's partly expedience (don't have to wait for something bought online to ship) and good quality, not just "buying local".
I don't worry about politically correct crap like that. OTOH, I wouldn't say I buy only based on price and quality. I tend not to go back to places where I've found I have unpleasant shopping experiences, for example.

If it's just the eggs, there's conceivably a chain of events that didn't cause harm to the chicken. How
actually likely is it that no harm came to the chicken? Not very.
I would probably
prefer not buy products from the PRChinese. However, this would be such an unsustainable and useless one-man damnbargo that it's not really worth pursuing.
Of course, however, as you folks know, I'm a lacto-vegetarian (and crustaceans don't count). So obviously I try to avoid products with dead animals in them, like hamburgers or Lee-Enfield rifle cartridges from the mid-19th century.

Fair point, but I would count it as a part of "quality" too. Same with "distance to the shop" etc. - anything that is a part of a "commercial trade-off". On the other hand, if you refused to go to a distant shop because of the carbon footprint issues, that would be among my criteria.
Quotecount it as a part of "quality" too.
I don't buy Chinese made tools. I'm not going to trust my life to a Chinese made chain.
Did some 'recycling' today; took a 10 mile coach journey, walked 1.5 miles, bought a 2nd hand bike for $50, cycled it 18-19 miles home, tomorrow I scrap if for the wheels, drive train and a few other things.
I guess it worked out cheaper than buying new, but mainly it was quickest way to get the other bike back on the road.
If it's marked with "fair trade" or something like that I generally avoid it.

That's the only time I'm guided by external considerations to quality and price though, as far as I am aware...

That's not really what motivates me. I think we should look after animals in our food chain because it seems fundamentally ethical, but I'm only willing to pay more if I think it's actually also a better product. With meat - especially chicken and eggs - there's a huge quality difference. I've said before that I very rarely get organic veg, for example, because I think there needs to be a quality difference to justify spending that bit extra and - for most veg - I just haven't noticed it.
I think I'm far more aware when it's an option - in Dorset where my family live, for example, there's a great local bakery and lots of farm shops and the like. That's not available in the East End.
The only one that's purely sort-of political is fish.

Yeah, but sometimes, there are certain things you simply can't avoid. Like air.
One of the local news channels did a piece on a family shortly after the whole Chinese-toys-lead-paint thing from a few years back; they tried to go 2 weeks or so without buying a single Chinese-made product, from make-up to dog food. They were sinking about 4 hours of research a day in it, just trying to deal with basic consumables and staples.

Also, in the Scott Pilgrim-verse, it's apparent you get mid-grade superpowers just from being a creepy man-child. That I can do.

There's needy call ya at two in the morning to see what you're doing crazy (white chick) and there's needy show up at your door at two in the morning crying because you didn't answer your phone crazy (Asian).
And then you let her in, and she lets you fuck her in the ass. Because then she knows you care.
You know, I've had 4 asian gfs, and 3 out of 4 loved the buttsecks. Never got close with the white chicks. This might deserve a poll. :hmm:

They're so freaky submissive, especially when they're spoiled. Mine used to call me Daddy. In public. Fucking bitch.
And 4? You fucker.
I try to buy foods with no or less salt, sugar, and various additives. I rarely buy foods that have MSG (Monosodium Glutamate), and I avoid stuff (foods, juices) with high fructose syrup. I try to buy foods that are as close to origins as possible, less processed the better.
However, I still eat some hot dogs and brats, and processed meats like lunch meat, though not a lot. I try to mostly use cereal that has less or no sugar or salt, or other additives. But I do still use some cereals that have sugar or salt; hard to stop using all of it. Once in a while I buy organic veggies, but not always.
Salt is way too much in everything, and it's not always easy to find less sodium stuff. But I pick the low salt or no salt soups, canned veggies, and other stuff where possible. Damn salt, too much, in some of my favorite canned soups! I still eat those soups but not as often.
So I try to be aware and careful but I don't go overboard on it.
As for Chinese made products. I'd avoid most of them if I could. i don't always pay attention but I certainly try to avoid Chinese produced foods. Too much bad food scares from China, crazy stuff, so I just avoid if I know the products are from China. I will buy clothing type goods since I'm not consuming those.

Isn't he from West Virginia? Maybe that's the cause.
Lived my first 20 years there. Then moved to Wilmington, Delaware for 8 years. I've been in Cincy since then. None of those three places have many Asians.
When I went to Marshall you could probably count the total number of Asian students on one hand. Delaware wasn't much different in that respect-- in fact, Jews were the closest thing to a minority at UD.
I don't know about the Huntington area specifically, but while there aren't a huge number of Asians in WV, I certainly talked to several Asian chicks when I lived there.

Well, it just never happened for me. There was a Filipino chick who went to my elementary, Jr. High & High School. I was friends with her little brother for a while but she was a year older than me & pretty hot, so she was way out of my league.

I've noticed a Slavic influx in the Dayton Area recently. Seen my first Slav guy with open shirt, wifebeater and gold chain. And a Merc.
It has also hit down here, apparently. At the Reds game last night, a gal named Desislava served me a "Coca Cola Zeeeroh" and her co-worker Nesh got me my pretzel. Desi was pleasant, but seemed to have a hell of a time figuring out how much change to give me for the crisp $20 I had handed her.
Now if we get some hot chicks with accents, I'll be happy. I could then reenact those Law and order:SVU episodes with East Euro housekeeprs.
