I'm leaving Whitehorse on Saturday, and with the move a big part of my Languish schtick will die.
No longer will I be able to regale people with stories of how much colder it is here, how much more space we have, how beautiful it is. No longer will I make my living my prosecuting Indians - now I will prosecute all different types. No longer will I inspire Savonarola to write stories about my curling broom +1.
I can try to pick up the pro-Alberta schtick again, but that's a crowded field.
So maybe it's true - Languish really is dying. :(
:(
That's ok. Edmonton is still pretty cold.
I'm pro-Alberta but i'm not an "Ethnic Albertan"... so that field isn't so crowded. That being said Neil does talk it up with the power of ten men.
Enjoy your move to sunnier climes.
Marching, armbands, etc.
I for one will miss your Yukon Schtick. :(
Didn't realize you were moving that far. Good luck with the move

Aye - off to Edmonton.
I'll be offline starting on Friday. If nobody hears from me by April 1st it means either Telus has screwed up our internet, our we were eaten by wolves on the drive down.
That's OK, we don't have any Albertans with a good schtick here, you can still carve out a niche easily.
BURN!

It's a given that Telus will screw up your internet, you should switch to Shaw who also sucks, but less so than Telus.
Are Edmonton gaols huge enough?

Sadly no, Alberta converted all of their gaols to hoosegows a few years ago.

I thought you said Edmonton would be even colder? Something about it being so far inland IIRC.

The Yukon is pretty far inland, but also 1200km farther north. It is rare that Whitehorse is warmer than Edmonton.

I don't mind Jetslove, even if it has taken over the hockey thread. The Apple love is dangerous though. I worry sometimes that Beeb might fall to Martinusism.

I went the other way and am all-Telus. Got the internet/tv/phone combo. I'm doubtful of phone over IP - I like having a dedicated line. That way when the power goes out (like it did today - Yukon Electric can burn in hell :ultra:) I'm still able to make a phone call.

Did you not have to pass a psychological exam to get new job?

The adapter comes with a battery. Mind you, I only use cordless phones, which wouldn't work in a power outage anyways, so it doesn't make a difference.

I think you will come to rue the decision to go all-Telus.
Come summertime, Katmai will be our only rep in the Far North (not counting Sweden...which I won't).

We should meet up for dinner.
One of my last chances to share tidbits like this:
my wife was awoken by howling wolves last night, which promptly set all the neighborhood dogs off barking. :Canuck:
There are no wolves in Edmonton?
Hell, we have coyotes down here. They even wake the neighborhood dogs up at night with their girly screams. :)

Pfft - coyotes. I see them every other day - hardly worth mentioning.
And no - no wolves near Edmonton. You have to go to the Rockies for them I believe.

It's a ~1 million metropolitan area. They are usually long gone.
There are coyotes on the fringes of Boston, so I don't see why there couldn't be wolves on the fringes of Edmonton.

Fair but when Wolves get too close to humans. We tend to start hunting them or drive them away. Coyotes appear less dangerous or maybe it's just size.
I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Oh there are. My brother in law's farm maybe an hour away from Edmonton has coyotes.
But wolves require a lot more land, and ranchers in particular hate them.
Good luck with the relocation
And yeah, I've had much better experiences with Shaw than Telus.

Meh - my FIL is a now retired lifer from AAGT/Telus. He's not a huge company man or anything, but he might think it odd for me to ditch Telus entirely.
 Why does he have to know who your provider is?
More importantly, why would he care?

He doesn't. But my wife would probably mention it in passing at some point.
It's the same reason why, once I move to Edmonton, I'm kind of obliged to get a newspaper subscription. My dad's a life-long newspaper man.
My dad spent most of his career working for GMRI/Darden, but I have no problem telling him how shitty and overpriced Red Lobster and Olive Garden have become. :)

My wife's family is wierd in that they view going to a chain restaurant as high dining. They'll look forward to a night out at Olive Garden. <_<
If they ever lived somewhere with a sizable Italian community they'd be aware of how crappy OG actually is. Actually, this is why GMRI was shocked when they opened test outlets in Philadelphia and they actually did very well. When they tried to open Red Lobsters in New England, they bombed since locals already had access to cheap, high-quality seafood.

Western Canada doesn't have a sizable Italian community, but we do have some guidos, and we still know what good Italian food is like.

AGT has gone straight down the crapper since it moved to BC. Something about BC just ruins things.
It's not like AGT was such a prize. We still had multi-party lines and pulse dialing until 91
And being dependent on external power sources for communication is just silly. If you insist on having a landline, a PSU that can run your routers and phone bases for a few hours isn't that hard to come by.
Mea culpa to those who told me to avoid Telus.
I had everything set up (eventually) for Telus to come set up phone/internet/tv the day after we took possession.
They would only give us a time between 9 and 4 <_<, but said they'd call before showing up. Of course they didn't, and just showed up. The tech (with a strong punjabi accent) said that with us not having any tvs, he couldn't set up our TV service. I asked about at least phone and internet, but he said he could only hook up phone, and we'd need to schedule another appointment. So he went outside to hook up the phone, and once he left we discovered we had no dial tone. <_<
When we went to schedule another appointment, we were told April 8th was the first available date. :ultra:
So we called Shaw and they offered to come the next day. :)
All Hail Shaw!
My cable was hooked up without having a TV in the house yet.
Outsourcing = FAIL.
You should have talked with Canadian Tire before going with Shaw, Beeb.

It perplexed me when the one in Delaware opened & did as well as it did. There are tons of better, authentic options in downtown Wilmington alone.

For one, Olive Gardens are usually located in suburbia, which makes them much more accessible than downtown restaurants. Second, I've noticed that the clientele for Olive Gardens is dominated by two groups: Older couples(60+) who probably want something reasonably priced and predictable, as well as easily accessible(hence suburban locations w/ plenty of parking as opposed to downtown); and mid-middle class couples and families (same reasons as older couples). I could see why families would prefer a Olive Garden to a more authentic restaurant- the authentic place is probably more expensive, less likely to have child friendly options, etc. Also, the mid-middle class families are more likely to be living out in suburbia as opposed to close to the downtown core.

Do you have to go to China to know real Chinese? :yucky:
Actually, from what I hear, yes. Chinese restaurants outside of China are supposedly nothing like real Chinese restaurants. I guess maybe Chinese restaurants in Chinatowns or other ethnic enclaves might be authentic, though.
