I bought that game. It killed my computer. Well, my hard drive anyways.

You are thinking of the remake.  Which I never played but probably sucked.  This is the original. The one that started it all.

The remake did indeed kill people's hard drives.

I also played through the entire original series all the way to Pools of Darkness (man that was insanely hard).

Serves you right for buying the terrible "remake".  Any forgotten realms product that refers to Myth Drannor is going to be utter shit.

Good man.

Atari dropped the ball with the remake.  It shouldn't have been made in the first place and hte drive wipes were TSR's ghosts striking the infidels from beyond.

I was at GenCon when they were still developing the remake, and they had a booth for the game with a bunch of the developers.  There was a playable demo there and I remember thinking "wow!  this looks cool" and so I bought it when it came out. :bleeding:  :Embarrass:

But quite possibly more interesting than playing the game itself...

Damn the UI of that game is awful.
The bad graphics- understandable for the time. But having the game in such a wee window like that. Ouch.

But yeah, these play through things are boring to watch, I don't get how some people watch the whole things. They are however good for watching individual cool moments and maybe for checking out how alternative paths would have been.

I remember being perplexed by the UI.  From the gigantic list of weapons - and pre internet and being about 12 when I played having no idea what half of them were - to trying to figure out the area map.

I remember playing the game for NES.  I rather enjoyed it, but had consistent issues where my game would magically wipe.  I would end up... less than pleased.

My mother got a book on DOS and decided to 'clean up' the computer by deleting my saved game.  It was a bitter time in my life. The first of many.

Hey the purchase of the 20 megabyte hard drive was a big deal.  No longer having to boot from a friggin floppy, or wait 10 minutes for the game to save was awesome.

You haven't lived until you waited 45 minutes for a game to load from cassette, or 20 minutes for Seven Cities of Gold to make a game disk.

I spent 2 days computerless while the fucking hard drive was 'optimized' after an acquaintance said it would improve performance.

I remember playing it in early nineties, either on Amiga or early PC. I got a pirated version (there were no other at that time in Poland) and the game would freeze often and lose saves. Still, I loved it.

I can't believe we used to play crap like that.

I couldn't get past the five minute mark on the first video.  He's a poor narrator.

20 minutes for Seven Cities of Gold to make a game disk.

Especially since it would sometimes error out at the end of the process, which as you mentioned took 20 minutes. :bleeding:

Did you ever find one of the Cities of Gold?  I thought I was BADASS the first time I did.  In fact, I remember the moment clearly:  I found the City of Gold while my brother was watching Belle and Sebastian on Nickelodeon at an annoyingly loud volume one Saturday morning, and my mother was cooking scrapple and eggs in the kitchen.

I found the tomb like 2 or 3 times.  The first time I found it was an epic journey across the heart of Darkest Africa, at the end of which I found the magnificent tomb of the pharaoh deep in the jungles of Mozambique.

The second time, I walked out of Cairo to the cheap giveaway cache right to the north, and the tomb happened to be there.

Of course, this location was far more realistic than the first one. :)

I was thinking the same thing.

Anyone have a good C64 emulator?  The last time I had one installed (prolly 5 years ago), I wasn't able to get Heart of Africa to run at all, and Seven Cities of Gold did run but there was something fucked up about it and I don't think I was able to leave the port at the beginning. :(

The Seven Cities of Gold (1984)
    Heart of Africa (1985)
    Robot Rascals (1986)
    Modem Wars (1988)
