Currently in a bottomless rut of boredom, so I want your collective advice on which game I should give a try. I'm open-minded, but a decent land wargame might suffice.
Currently having on my HD:
- Bioshock
- EU3 HTTT
- EU3 Rome
- Solium Infernum
- Empire Total War
I'm finding Achtung Panzer : Kharkov 1943 fairly interesting, but I'm hesitating because Russians seem to be meh. Plus it's singleplayer only.
Rise of Prussia? As AGEOD hasn't yet fixed the AI's tendency since AACW to split its force and send them Corps in pointless raids far behind enemy lines, I'm staying neutral until it gets fixed.
WWI? Waiting for the Gold edition. It's not like I wouldn't like to learn to play PoG, though, if given incentives (like patient PBEM), but I'd still be a n00b.
I'm the mood for killing Krauts or Reds, perhaps even with PBEM. For once, I might try to have my ass handed to me by Berkut or someone alike, without spending half a day planning my turn though (like WITP: AE).
I've been thinking of trying Achtung Panzer Kharkov too. It seems a bit like an upgraded Steel Panthers, but covering only one battle, so it could be too repetitive.
And I'm also waiting for the damn WWI Gold, but I'd like to hear reviews of it first before I buy.
If you're open to trying an older game, check out Steel Panthers: World at War, which is free from MatrixGames. I also recommend the Enhanced mod, available here (http://spwaw.com/)
Try S.T.A.C.K.E.R

Downloaded it, but colors are all fucked up even in compatibility mode (I use Windows 7).
Even the program to force it into windowed mode refuses to work. I am at loss.
EDIT: Finally got it to work. Plus, the Enhanced Mod 2010 is scheduled to be out in the next few days.
Drakken, I am always willing to teach someone new PoG, if you want to try a ACTS game.
And after that, you can move on to a big kid's game like this :

Sure, I'll download the rulebook to have a read. Gimme a week or so to digest it.
I've registered on ACTS. Unsurprisingly, Drakken on ACTS.
Never used ACTS before. In fact, never played PoG ever either.
You can teach me too Berkut

That's ok - I really enjoy teaching the game, to be honest.
Let me know when you are ready. mechanically, the game is pretty straightforward. The devil is in the details of strategy and decision making though.

You exceeded my capabilities long ago Jaron. I would have to learn from you.
Come on. I want to learn from the BEST so I can beat Tamas.

When you get bored with Berkut and want an opponent you might beat, let me know.

I've read the living rules a few months ago, I'll have to get reacquainted with them. It's 32 pages, shouldn't be that long. I remember concepts that were obscure, though, I'll have learn through gameplay and make a truckload of mistakes.
I should be ready to begin about this weekend.
Cool - happy to play a learning game where we just tell each other what is on our hands, and talk about what we are trying to do and all that.
I will happily play counsel to Drakken. :smarty:

Which side is easier for a n00b? Allies or CP?
CP is harder to win with, but easier to play for a newb.
There isn't as much "What should I do???" with the CP, I think.

Are there other documents that I need to read/know besides the Living Rules?
Not really.
Make sure you understand the restrictions on how Strategic redeployment works, and definitely understand the supply rules.
Supply, or rather the threat of getting cut out of supply, dominate the tactics of the game. Oddly enough, so much so that with good play, nobody should ever be put out of supply (barring sacrificing units intentionally).

I am ready to take you up on that offer, after Drakken's game. I have the BG but never played it.
I'll breeze through the rest of the rules tonight, and I'll start a game tomorrow on ACTS.
If you want to learn sooner, Joan, I can start us up a game.
Been sick all day, couldn't find time to start the game. Will cruise through the rules tonight and start the game ASAP.
Been looking on ACTS on how to start one, though.
20 expansions cards and 7 card hands, Berkut? Which ones do you prefer?
The standard is no expansion cards but an 8-card hand, Drakken.
I don't prefer the expansion cards, to be honest.
Lately I've mostly been playing with the tournament modified rules. That uses an 8 card hand instead of 7, and changes some of the VPs around a little bit. I can send you the CB box with the tournament map, and a link to the slightly modified rules, if you want to do that.
Otherwise, vanilla is fine. I don't like the extra 20 cards, because it kind of messes up the deck progression.
Berkut, you should just start Drakken out on the 8-card hand and vanilla rules. The tourney changes - while nice - assume you already have all the vanilla rules internalized.
