Currently in a bottomless rut of boredom, so I want your collective advice on which game I should give a try. I'm open-minded, but a decent land wargame might suffice.

Currently having on my HD:

- Bioshock
- EU3 HTTT
- EU3 Rome
- Solium Infernum
- Empire Total War

I'm finding Achtung Panzer : Kharkov 1943 fairly interesting, but I'm hesitating because Russians seem to be meh. Plus it's singleplayer only.

Rise of Prussia? As AGEOD hasn't yet fixed the AI's tendency since AACW to split its force and send them Corps in pointless raids far behind enemy lines, I'm staying neutral until it gets fixed.

WWI? Waiting for the Gold edition. It's not like I wouldn't like to learn to play PoG, though, if given incentives (like patient PBEM), but I'd still be a n00b.

I'm the mood for killing Krauts or Reds, perhaps even with PBEM. For once, I might try to have my ass handed to me by Berkut or someone alike, without spending half a day planning my turn though (like WITP: AE).

I've been thinking of trying Achtung Panzer Kharkov too. It seems a bit like an upgraded Steel Panthers, but covering only one battle, so it could be too repetitive.

And I'm also waiting for the damn WWI Gold, but I'd like to hear reviews of it first before I buy.

If you're open to trying an older game, check out Steel Panthers: World at War, which is free from MatrixGames. I also recommend the Enhanced mod, available here

Downloaded it, but colors are all fucked up even in compatibility mode (I use Windows 7).

Even the program to force it into windowed mode refuses to work. I am at loss.

EDIT: Finally got it to work. Plus, the Enhanced Mod 2010 is scheduled to be out in the next few days.

Drakken, I am always willing to teach someone new PoG, if you want to try a ACTS game.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Sure, I'll download the rulebook to have a read. Gimme a week or so to digest it.

I've registered on ACTS. Unsurprisingly, Drakken on ACTS.

Never used ACTS before. In fact, never played PoG ever either.

That's ok - I really enjoy teaching the game, to be honest.

Let me know when you are ready. mechanically, the game is pretty straightforward. The devil is in the details of strategy and decision making though.

You can teach me too Berkut

You exceeded my capabilities long ago Jaron. I would have to learn from you.

When you get bored with Berkut and want an opponent you might beat, let me know.

I've read the living rules a few months ago, I'll have to get reacquainted with them. It's 32 pages, shouldn't be that long. I remember concepts that were obscure, though, I'll have learn through gameplay and make a truckload of mistakes.

I should be ready to begin about this weekend.

Cool - happy to play a learning game where we just tell each other what is on our hands, and talk about what we are trying to do and all that.

I will happily play counsel to Drakken.  :smarty:
