Over the last couple of weeks lots and lots of minor earth quakes have been occurring in iceland, between 600 and 2000 per day are being measured. These are high numbers, in addition the number of mini quakes over Richter 2.0 is abnormally high. As you can see from the map (red and orange being strongest) they are centered in one spot under a glacier.
This might mean the big one is on the way. Note, practially nobody lives there, there are farms in the area, but no settlements much over a few hundred people in the areas. Reykjavik will not be destroyed and Absolutist will not be hurt (he is in Denmark or Gaza or Guantanamo)
I was writing out a tearful goodbyy post to J-dawg, then read it is about iceland.

I lost a few pounds, plate tectonics are adapting.
It turned out to be nothing when it was happening right under my house in early 2008. The same way too. Thousands of small quakes. Maybe they'll get lucky. There are still seismologists from universities all over the world coming here to study it.
Maybe they can save the Icelandic economy with a new industry: Tecto-Tourism!

Oh yeah, the evacuation order only applies to the surrounding areas of the eruption. My parents are in the family's summer cottage closer by though, and can see the glowing column of fire fairly well. They're still pretty far away and aren't in any danger. My sister's friend is at a farm near Skógar though and they're evacuating. He was going along with some locals to check up on an elderly couple who live a bit further up north and help them get out of Dodge.

Languish, the finest source in breaking news. The farm is the one on the other side of Skogarfoss from Skogar. So smack dab in the middle iirc.
The fissure is currently about 1 km in diameter, ashfall seems limited. Maybe it's just a smallish "tourist" eruption.

And we're off to the main event. An eruption has begun underneath the glacier at it's highest point. Massive flooding in progress. All the folks who had to evacuate 3 weeks ago have upped sticks again.

I hope that lady who screws invisible elves that shoot glitter loads is ok. :(
Ok so the eruption is well on the way towards melting away completely the top of the glacier, with the meltwater raging out from and over the smaller glaciers that lie down to the lowlands from the main one. The fissure under the glacier is over 3 miles wide, so the first stage of the eruption is tiny compared to this one. Ashfall is still limited, although once the eruption finishes turning the top of this massive glacier into slurry (a couple more hours), that will probably change.
