Title: Shameless self-promotion
Post by: Brazen on January 31, 2010, 05:06:23 AM
On April 25th I'm running the London Marathon in aid of The Alzheimer's Society, a cause many of you know is close to my heart as my lovely mum died with the condition five years ago. Even the training is proving the hardest thing I've ever attempted, not least because I've overweight and over old. I'm off to do 10 miles today, and getting into double figures is hugely scary.

If you can help, please visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Berry As a bonus, if you sponsor me more than £20 you can chose a track to motivate/irritate/amuse me on my way round which I'll put on my playlist and dedicate to you!

Gathered just over £100 from the old boys at dad's club last night.

Posted a version of the following in TBR, but no apologies for recycling.

Alzheimer's is more horrible than you can ever imagine. My mum had early onset Alzheimer's, whose first symptoms appeared even before she retired, and she suffered from the condition for 10 years. Over this time she gradually forgot my name, a lifetime of memories together and, eventually, who I was altogether. Through the early stages she knew exactly what was happening to her - every word misplaced, every face forgotten, every task done wrong - and came to hate every day.

Dementia charities are massively underfunded. Despite the fact 10% of people over 65 and 50% of those over 85 will suffer, for every £6 given to cancer charities in the UK, just £1 goes to Alzheimer's. This is despite the fact that financial cost of dementia in the UK comes to over £17 billion.

Sadly, much of the reason is because it's swept under the carpet and not talked about, much like cancer 40 years ago. People with the condition can exhibit embarrassing behaviour, be hard to control, and even smelly, despite the efforts of exasperated carers trying to wrangle a reluctant fully-grown adult.

There is currently no cure and the drugs presently available only temporarily slow worsening of symptoms for about six to 12 months. That's if you can get hold of them. Many doctors are reluctant to prescribe them as they are so expensive and do so little.

Some people maintain that Alzheimer's disease is not fatal, but it has no survivors. As parts of the brain die and can no longer support body functions, people succumb to related conditions - pneumonia from inhaling rather than swallowing food, for instance.

Hopefully the efforts of the like of Terry Pratchett, who was recently diagnosed with the condition and presented a Richard Dimbleby lecture on it, and Tony Robinson, whose mother had the condition and who delivered the lecture, will go some way towards raising public awareness and understanding.

I don't take on this Marathon lightly - I am, let's say, past my physical prime and on the longest runs every step for the last hour is agony - but if my efforts can raise some cash towards research that might one day lead to some people not having to go through what my family did, it will be worth it.

Going to try to scrape together some cash for this.  Sorry to hear about your mother.  My grandmother is getting rather deep in as well.  It's a terrible thing to watch and know that there's almost nothing that you can do. :(

from Dow Jones:

QuoteMedivation Seeks Alzheimer's Breakthrough
Medivation Inc. (MDVN) is swinging for the fences and, if successful, its experimental
Alzheimer's disease treatment Dimebon will make all the highlight reels.
The San Francisco-based drug developer is expected to report late-stage data
by midyear—or much sooner by some estimates—that will be the second test
of Dimebon's effectiveness. The drug, being developed in partnership with
Pfizer Inc. (PFE), could bring in billions of dollars in sales and provide a new
option for the incurable, degenerative disease.
"If we can really show what we showed in our last trial... I think the drug will
have significant commercial potential," said Chief Executive David Hung, who
aims to file for marketing approval by year-end.
Success in the trial could lift shares to $80, according to Wedbush Securities
analyst Kimberly Lee, while its failure could send it down to $15.
Elemer Piros, analyst with Rodman and Renshaw, projects the drug's peak
annual sales at $4 billion and gives the study a 60% chance of success.
Medivation currently has no products on the market.
Much remains unknown about the disease, and many companies have failed to
develop drugs in the area. Those failures as well as lingering doubts about the
strength of Dimebon's data are reflected in the number of investors betting against
the company. Short interest in Medivation's stock was about 17% of its float.
Nonetheless, the aging population would make a new treatment incredibly
lucrative. About 5.3 million people have Alzheimer's disease in the U.S., and it is
the sixth-leading cause of death, according to The Alzheimer's Association.
Current treatments include Aricept, sold by Pfizer and Eisai Co. (4523.TO), and
Namenda from Forest Laboratories Inc. (FRX), but both have moderate, temporary
benefits. Aricept had worldwide sales of about $3.4 billion in fiscal 2008 but
will likely face generic competition later this year. Dr. Hung believes that
Dimebon could have comparable sales.
Previous data show that Dimebon may have improved and longer-lasting effects
than current treatments, along with reduced side effects.

Quick question.

You said that people who give £20+ can pick a song you have to listen to while running. Can we pick a horrible 15-minute Russian remix of the Tetris theme (something like this, just worse and longer? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOe0UwSh3Ds)).

Also, can several people pick the same song?

My grandmother suffered from dementia in her old age. It was terrible - not only did she forget who my mother was, but she accused her of being an imposter. So there's a wad of cash headed your way, and I'm going to pick a track in honour of my granny.

But yes, it's grim not just to see your loved ones forget you, but to go through the sheer frustration again and again of trying to explain even the most basic of facts, and the sufferer's hurt at being told what they firmly believe to be true is wrong.

Brazen, you should join the annual HK marathon if you like a good challenge.  It is held in February/March every year, which means that you have to run when humidity is 95%+.  Another big factor is that the route covers one of our newest, longest and deepest cross harbour tunnel.  That means long and steep slopes, both up and down.

Six weeks to go and I've just hit over £1,000  :D

Just another £1,500 to go :bleeding:

It'd help if my old work would hurry up and donate the over £200 they raised through a sponsored dress-down day. I suspect one of the social team has pocketed it.

So far, my Languish play list is:
QuoteAsk (Smiths)
Here Comes Your Man (Pixies)
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper)
I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
The Distance (Cake0
OR
Run Like Hell (Pink Floyd)
Montana (Zappa)
Balkan Techno (The Unpronounceables)
Other sources have been less forthcoming, but the remains of my playlist to date are:
QuoteI'm Not OK (My Chemical Romance)
Filthy Gorgeous (Scissor Sisters)
Keep On Running (Spencer Davies Group)
Everything Counts (Depeche Mode)
If you're still pondering, now's the time to go for it. I'm writing a press release and going for the hard sell with local press and national health magazines and glossy supplements in the next couple of days, so get your choice in now and have it immortalised!

Well, could be something with my credit card. I just wanted to buy something from Direct2Drive (Kudos: Rock Legend is up for 7 EUR), and it said the payment couldn't be processed. Possibly something with the payment verification currently not working.

I checked my cc balance and it's fine, so at least no one seems to have splurged with my stolen card details. :P

I will try again later to see if it clears up.

Had a pretty bad long one today. 12 miles in three hours, limped the last couple of miles and when I got in nearly passed out and was sick. Even my fingers were swollen up and got a blister from one of my Marathon candidate pairs of shoes.   :(

Only two more increasingly long weekend runs then I start my taper. So basically I have just a week and a half to get as fit as I'll ever get prior to the event, then I'm cutting back to store up some energy.

Never thought I'd be the sort of person who'd be getting up at 5.30 am to get my mid-week runs over before work :bleeding:

Just looked at the Marathon site and the countdown read 1 month, 23 hours and 59 minutes! I have teh phear!

An old, old friend has offered me a room in Blackheath the night before which will save me getting up at the crack of dawn and battling public transport.

Coming up to eight miles on what was supposed to be my last, longest training run, I crossed someone's drive and didn't see a chewed up bit around a drain cover, probably frost damage. I tripped and fell almost entirely head-long. I now have:

1. Two heels-of-hands skinned down to the muscle (a seasonal stigmata!)
2. Massive road-rash up the forearm
3. A sprained shoulder I can't lift
4. Two grazed knees
5. Bruised upper thigh

And in the hail too A good Samaritan came out of his house with a first-aid kit to patch me up. Tried to phone home, but I broke that too.

After the shock wore off (Welshie actually made me a cup of sweet tea when I started shaking, bless) I'm fine, just upset to have to cut my last, longest run short. If all's fine tomorrow, I'll try a treadmill plod or if not a wee pedal just to get the time in this weekend.

And because there's no limit to my self-promotion, I'm going to be in the local paper. They're sending a photographer on Saturday to capture my athletic form, road-rash and all.

Went to the expo to register yesterday and came back laden with goodies. No backing out now!

My shoulder's only just better now - I could hardly move it for ages and even now have to use my left hand to support my right when I pick up a drink, for instance. To make matter worse, I've also had a rotten cold for the last two weeks and have been kept awake coughing all night. It's got to be better by Sunday, right? Right?

Oh, and after training through all the ice, snow and slush, it's set to be the hottest London marathon ever - anything up to 23 C! I don't do heat, but I do do horrific sunburn!

I'm hoping these incidents will work like thw Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crisis inducer and help me perform at my best!

Slather on the sunscreen, take lots of acetaminophen, and run your little heart out. You can do it!

I've been meaning to do this for a while (donate that is, not run the marathon).  Done now though accidentally anonymously.

Run, run run :w00t:

I lived  A far from speedy time of 7 hours 12 though  :Embarrass:
The problem with having one's longest training run restricted to 13 miles due to illness and injury means one sails through the first half and the second half is agony. Doubly so after mile 20  :pinch:
More later, but it even hurts to type right now.
