News and Notes:
QuoteCoach Tom Cable said Wednesday that he has spoken with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis about allegations that Cable has a history of violent behavior toward women.
"What we talked about is between us, and we'll keep it that way," he said.
Cable said the conversation came within the past two days and that his job status was not discussed. Cable said he plans to coach the team for the remainder of the season.
The Raiders are undergoing a "serious evaluation" of allegations made to ESPN by Cable's first wife, Sandy Cable, and former girlfriend, Marie Lutz, that the coach physically abused them at various times during their relationships.
Cable acknowledged in a statement Sunday that he struck Sandy Cable. Cable said the altercation happened more than 20 years ago and was the only time he has touched a woman inappropriately.
COLTS: Starting linebacker Tyjuan Hagler has been lost for the rest of the season with a ruptured biceps.
EAGLES: Running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) is set to return when Philadelphia hosts the Cowboys on Sunday.
TEXANS: Steve Slaton's starting job is in jeopardy after Ryan Moats ran for 126 yards Sunday. Coach Gary Kubiak won't say who'll start at Indianapolis.
CHIEFS: Kansas City was awarded San Diego wide receiver Chris Chambers via a waiver claim
SEAHAWKS: Matt Hasselbeck watched most of Wednesday's practice to rest his broken ribs, but he's expected to start again Sunday against Detroit.
Ravens were favored by 3.5 at Cincy last I checked.
Good... good... :menace:
Falcons favored by 10, Saints favored by 13...hopefully a boring weekend for my teams.
Hasselbeck's hurt again? Poor guy, he's the the only good player on that whole team.

You haven't heard about it? Certain parts of the media who were cheering on the Niners' blue-collar approach to victory are applauding their skid after they signed Crabtree. Their spin is that when they signed a spoiled brat who held out for a quarter of the season and gave him a great big payday, they showed that all of Singletary's talk about attitude, toughness and the will to win was just talk. I think Ditka was talking that way, for example.

Not really.
they were 3-1 with wins against each of the teams in their bad division.
They got blown out by Falcons
and then lost to Houston and Indy (combined 12-3) since signing Crabtree.
Oh and lost to those two by total of 7 points.
Just saw that one of the local Coney Islands (in Detroit "Coney Islands" are Greek Cafes) is offering 50% off the entire menu every Monday after a Lion's victory. That's bound to be the cheapest promotion ever.
From the most recent TMQ column:
QuoteThe Crabtree Curse continues. San Francisco was 3-1, with its only defeat a fluky last-play loss; then the 49ers signed Michael Crabtree, and are 0-3 since. All that work Mike Singletary did building team spirit on the Niners went out the window when management decided a player could jerk the team around all he wanted and still get a $17 million reward. On the key down of San Francisco's loss at Indianapolis -- third-and-10 for the 49ers with six minutes remaining -- Alex Smith fell on a "coverage sack" when no one was open. Megabucks me-first diva Crabtree was nicely handled by undrafted free agent cornerback Jacob Lacey.
Is holding out automatically jerking the team around or did he do additional jerking?

Is holding out automatically jerking the team around or did he do additional jerking?
Holding out isn't particularily bad. It's a bit jerky, but it's the way things are these days. Bitching about it would be like bitching about free agency.
On the other hand, all his talk (or rather his manager/agent/cousin's talk) about sitting out the season and going into next year's draft was pretty bad.
Not to mention his reasoning behind holding out: That being he felt he should have been the first wide receiver taken in the draft, and even though he wasn't still wanted to be paid as such.
QuoteRavens-Bengals Sunday primer
Murphy's Law was in the house in Week 5 when the Ravens were ambushed at home by the Bengals, 17-14. It was a game played almost in slow motion -- at least by the Ravens -- and a loss that shouldn't have happened.
Why? Because anything that could go wrong, did, from the 10 penalties the Ravens incurred to the Bengals' penalties that weren't called to the stellar job Cincinnati's patchwork offensive line did against the Ravens' pass rush.
That was the game that cost Ray Lewis $25,000 for the thundering hit that separated Chad Ochocinco from his helmet. It was the game where Andre Caldwell caught the game-winning touchdown after throwing nickel back Chris Carr to the ground by his facemask and getting away with it. It was where Ochocinco tackled cornerback Domonique Foxworth rather than allow him to make an interception -- and didn't get flagged, either.
Unless the Ravens are afflicted with the same lethargy, Sunday in Cincinnati figures to be different. The Ravens have figured out a few things since then, and reinforced others.
The defense finally went back to the attack mode against Denver. The Ravens played multiple fronts, used more blitzes and beat up on quarterback Kyle Orton. Carson Palmer should be forewarned. He was sacked only once in the first game. If he's sacked only once today, the Bengals could easily win this game.
The other key for the defense is getting after Cedric Benson, who snapped the Ravens' streak for not allowing a 100-yard rusher at 40 games. Benson is good, but he isn't that good. The Ravens missed too many tackles that day. Linebacker Antwan Barnes, in fact, hasn't played since missing a tackle on Benson's 28-yard touchdown run.
Having a healthy Haloti Ngata would help, but even at 70 percent, Ngata could make a difference. The linebackers need to play big this game. Lewis needs to play big; he had his share of mental and physical mistakes in that game.
The defense should respond. And the offense should give Cincinnati a big dose of Ray Rice. The Bengals couldn't handle him the first time, when he had 143 yards from scrimmage, including a 48-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown. That was the Ravens' only offensive touchdown in the game. That's another example of Murphy's Law. Holding Joe Flacco's offense to one touchdown won't happen again.

45 yards against the Ravens in the first quarter. Defensive penalties, naturally. You know, like Pass Interference on uncatchable balls or plays that Ochocinco fumbles on, things like that.

Houston is shooting themselves in the foot. Two turnovers, one on the goal line, something like 8 or 9 penalties, etc. 13 - 3 at the half, which is kind of amazing. Manning has thrown the ball ~40 times already.

lol, I think some of the quotes from Dick Enberg and Dan Fouts about the Bengals summed this game up nicely.
On the incomplete pass to Mason in the endzone, handcuffed by the DB: "How is that not a penalty?"
Brian Leonard falling two yards short of the first down, and getting it anway: "They got a very generous spot on that one."
Too funny.

That doesn't help at all, since they've been a marked team all season long--leading the league in pass interference penalties and total penalties overall--but they've got bigger problems to address for next year.
But, all things considered, the Bengals are simply dialed in this season.

I don't so much think that the Bengals are for real, as the Ravens are pretenders. Their corners are bad, their pass rush anaemic and they have the worst kicker in NFL history. Missing Ngata today didn't help them, but the Ravens have been exposed as a second-tier team.
 Kris Brown makes the 56 yarder earlier, but chokes on the ~40 yard game tying FG with no time left. Welp. Texans lose by 3, drop to 5-4. The bye week is finally here.
Seedy: you're friggin' blind if you didn't see the blatant penalties on the part of the Ravens today. You could make the claim that one or two of them were in a gray area, but the fact of the matter is the Ravens got flagged so many times because they are an undisciplined team. An undisciplined team is usually a poorly coached team. I used to think Ray-Ray was a great player-leader, but if he's not chewing his teammates out for stupid penalties (and I'm guessing he's complaining about the refs rather than doing that), maybe he's not that great of a leader after all.
Another shocker: the Ravens got away with at least 2 uncalled penalties, not to mention a couple generous spots.
Anyway, I'm happy. Bungles are playing with an intensity I've rarely seen and sit atop the division, with a 4-0 division record. Only thing I'm worried about is that they'll play soft against their upcoming soft opponents.
Hopefully the Steelers won't get swept by the Bungles like some other teams in the AFC North. :P

Same coaching as last season, except on defense. And I take exeption to the fact that a Rex Ryan defense is a better coached team.
There's more to the penalties here than just undisciplined play. Which, I will say, is a big part of it. But not the only part.

Well, to follow their best effort of the year with their worst is definitely not a recipe for the playoffs, that's for sure.
But the Bengals are for real. After their first few wins by the skin of their teeth, they're starting to play serious ball. And Palmer is healthy, so look out.

I may: drive up to The Pitt this weekend :shifty:
Ugh. the Yinzer circle of hell.
Yeah, but last time I was up there the Bungles won. Turns out the wife has some stupid-ass fundraiser on Saturday that might derail our plans.

Well, maybe next year the Ravens won't talk shit about the bad officiating. The refs stick together, and won't let that shit slide.
Have you seen the Bengals' remaining schedule?

Beware the Crabtree Curse! San Francisco opened the season 3-1, with its sole loss to powerhouse Minnesota on the game's final snap. Since signing Michael Crabtree, San Francisco has lost four straight -- the Niners just rolled over at home against the Titans, who came into the contest 1-6. Coach Mike Singletary had San Francisco's players buying into the notion that no one's bigger than the team. Then, suddenly, you can jerk San Francisco around all you want and get $17 million guaranteed as your reward. San Francisco management's cave-in to the me-first Crabtree triggered an instant losing streak, by communicating to other 49ers the message that the team-first stuff was always just empty talk. Caving in to Crabtree may cost the Niners their season.
Squared Sevens apologists have put word on the grapevine that team management should be praised because the contract Crabtree signed in early October was the same one offered before his nutty holdout began -- no added sweeteners were offered. So Crabtree shafts his team, and the team responds by not upping its offer -- talk about profiles in courage! Once training camp broke, San Francisco should have reduced its offer to Crabtree, since he was worth less at that point. A rookie who holds out is worth less every week; by season's start he is worth substantially less, since he becomes less likely to succeed as a pro, while projecting waves of negativity onto the team.
Yet Crabtree was allowed to take training camp and the first month of the season off, sitting on his couch -- and then he was given just as much money as he would have received had he reported on time and put in the work like everyone else. To boot, when he finally bothered to show up, Crabtree was treated by the Niners as a conquering hero. The result is four straight defeats for a team that previously looked primed for a playoff run. And don't tell me the Niners have offensive line injuries -- it's the NFL, everybody has injuries. Owing to a featherbed schedule -- only two of San Francisco's remaining eight opponents have a winning record -- this team still might stumble to a decent finish. But before Crabtree, Singletary did not tolerate excuses -- but suddenly the San Francisco franchise is all about excuses. Beware the Crabtree Curse!

I was just watching one of my old Barney Miller episodes I had TiVO'd.
Chano: "Do you know what the definition of 'anarchy' is?"
Yemana: "Yeah. It's where everybody runs around doing whatever they want. Like the Jets."

Given their established pattern thus far of winning the games they should lose & losing games they should win (with one lone exception, which was barely a win over Cleveland), I'm not comfortable about any of those games.
I'm happy with how things are for the Bungles, and I'm also happy I get to see Favre play one more time at PBS. Hopefully the dude who stole the ball from him last time is ready if we need him again.
