Title: Late to the Party, Chapter CLXXIV: Rome on HBO
Post by: Martinus on October 16, 2009, 07:19:41 AM
So, obviously I have heard of this show before but never got around to seeing it. Have been watching it since yesterday (brought the first series with me on my trip and watched 5 episodes on the plane) and I'm loving it.

If it had more gay sex it would be perfect. :P

You'd be late for your own funeral.

I also checked that the actor playing Octavian was 17 when they started shooting the series.

So perving about him is: legal.  :P

There is gay sex in the second season I think.

Six Feet Under has mucho faggotry, and it's a few years old now...perfect for you.

I pretty much hated the show. Too much titty and jaw-jaw, not enough cohorts killing shit.

It was definitely not a military history of the period, to be sure.

What saved it for me was the grit, the score, and the acting.  Except for later Octavian, it was pretty much perfectly cast for its purposes.

Pullo and Vorenus are on my list of favourite fictional charactars evarh!  :D

It was a brilliant show, historicity be damned.

Pullo for me, for sure.  Vorenus was far more generic (and Kevin McKidd a more limited actor, from what I saw).  I loved Ciarán Hinds as Caesar, though, more than anyone in any other role on the show.

Ceasar is perfectly cast for me, both in terms of his looks and his behaviour, that's exactly how I would have imagined him.

That reminds me. I'm still angry that Providence has never been released on DVD. I'd snatch up all the seasons at once! <_<

Could you please tell me? If the reason is good enough I might even manage to watch more than 20 minutes...

The sister on Providence is an old friend of my families'.  She's Mormon.  Watched over me as a little kid in Sunday School.

Because Blessed isn't paying Augustus, he is playing Augustus as perceived by Claudius:  loud, sometimes kind, but more than a bit thick when it comes to family.  Blessed plays the Augustus of the books quite well, even though he isn't particularly believable as the historical Augustus "as we know him."

And you have to accept the stage-like production values of the series as a given.  This wasn't a flaw in the production, it was a deliberate production decision.

I agree with Grumbler: this isn't Augustus the world-conquoring emperor, this is Augustus the guy completely unable to handle his truly horrible family.  :D

One of my favourite scenes is the one where Augustus is reviewing the line of guys alleged to have fucked Julia, and at one point in a sort of angry dispair roars: "Is there anyone here who has *not* had sex with my daughter?!"

I wonder why she agreed to play a role on what was essentially a small city version of Sex and the City.

Hehe, yeah that's awesome.

For the record, Octavian is now my favourite character in "Rome". And not just because he is cute but because he is clever. :P

You're going to be in for a disappointment in season 2.  The casting and portrayal of older Augustus is bizarre.

Agree.  That totally didn't work for me.  Given the ability of Hollywood to "age" people (and vice versa)* [insert Dorsey joke here], I would have thought it possible to retain the excellent Max Pirkis through the whole series.  The transition to older Octavian/Augustus just didn't work for me. Maybe if he hadn't been following such a terrific performance it might have worked.

*Famously, making the twenty-five year difference between the ages of Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn disappear in The Lion in Winter.
