Title: PSA: Deals on Computer Stuff
Post by: derspiess on October 13, 2009, 09:39:12 AM
Figured we might as well have something similar to the game deals thread.

I'll start it off with Newegg's deal on an OEM version of Win7 Home Premium 64-bit for $99 shipped.  Won't ship until 10/22 of course.

So if you get it OEM, basically the only difference is you can't get Microsoft tech support (big deal) and can't swap out your motherboard, correct?

Don't forget about the 30 dollar Windows 7 for students offer.

#1 - True.
#2 - Only in theory.

The license prevents you from installing the OS on another computer.  But you can still do it and it works fine.

But Microsoft registers MAC addresses when you register Windows online, correct?  If so then how do you get around this?  Just call them up and lie?

They don't explicitly say "you can't use this if you swap mobo" because it's still the same computer with a new part; they just force you to call up and tell them that so they can activate it manually.

I haven't been put in this situation with Vista, but I did have to call a few times when playing around with XP after I had maxed out the number of activations   Once I answered about 3 differently-phrased questions that I did not have the OS installed on a different computer, they activated it for me.

What is the official deal with upgrading from Vista? Do you have to have an upgrade coupon to get it for free, or is it just a matter of having bought it within some time frame?

No, not every purchase automatically qualifies.  I don't know why some do and some don't.  I bought Princesca a laptop in August that didn't qualify for the free upgrade despite having Vista Home Premium preinstalled.

You do need a coupon.  Bought if you bought one after July 21st (?) and think you should have gotten a coupon or lost yours, contact the retailer & ask if they can get you another coupon.

AFAIK, practically every retailer was offering this on all Vista PCs with the exception of those that had Vista Home Basic.

April 28th.

I am rather annoyed, since I was going to skip buying Vista and just use XP, but a friend of mine said MS was going to give free upgrades to anyone who bought Vista after some date that was preceeding the date he told me, so I went ahead and grabbed Vista.

Oh well.

I asked this in another thread, but since you guys are discussing upgrades...

I want to upgrade to Win 7 on my Mac.  I might just take this deal.

I have a laptop, currently with Vista.  I don't know if it's Vista, or if it's all the bloatware/malware, but it runs like crap.  But rather than pay $100 for 7, I'd like to take the copy of Win XP currently on my Mac, and install it on the laptop.

Can I do this?  Or will anti-piracy stop it from happening?

You might have to be slick about it if it doesn't activate for you automatically-- call in & tell them you had to swap the motherboard for the pc the xp license had been installed on.

But I would also give Vista a fair shot on the laptop-- clean the crap off of it or do a clean install.  It might not be as bad as it appears to be.

I'm not sure if I can find the install disk, and it ran like crap from day one (although I think it's worse now).

It's XP, you'll be fine BB. Just don't download/install the Genuine Windows Notification update.

To install it? No idea except to tell Microsoft you bought a legit XP or not.

That's why I've never installed it.  The text says something like letting Microsoft help you to ensure that your xp install is legit.  I already know that it is legit and don't need another process running.

It's a pain in the ass because MS' site requires the plugin to be running in order to download certain things, like any Windows Media Player updates. <_<

Microsoft says that you do, but apparently you don't.  I think it is always the first update that MSAU tries to install, but if you cancel it apparently the rest install without issue.

Every time I turn on my work laptop, the notice comes to install it. I always just close of out it and my computer still regularly updates.

:( Man, I should have snagged that monitor from woot.com when grumbler posted it.  I need a new one, but figured I'd be able to find a similar deal any time.  I can't and it sucks and woot has some shitty Timex watches on there today.  Ugh.

Woot only lists monitors every now & then.

Dell has some pretty good deals on monitors at times.  And this 22" LG on Newegg looks pretty decent: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005132&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-NA-_-NA-_-NA

Oh hey I totally forgot about Costco and their nice sized electronics "department" right by the main entrance (and their website of course).  Thanks Kat.   :)

Edit: lol look at the reviews: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11475036&whse=BC&Ne=5000001+4000000&eCat=BC|84&N=4001499%204294910501&Mo=3&No=2&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&topnav=#reviews

Pros: great picture
Cons: poor sound quality

The integrated speakers put out very limited sound and there is no place to hook up extra speakers. However, the picture looks amazing

1 star.   :lmfao:

If you can, MBM, hold out for 16:10 rather than 16:9.  I find it much more satisfying.

Does Costco still not accept MasterCard?  That's kinda been a deal-breaker with me for the discount stores.

No, they still only take debit cards and American Express.

Edit:  Oh yeah, grumbler, thanks for pointing that out, and now that I'm looking at the two types, I'm thinking the 16:10 is indeed the way to go.  They don't seem to be all that much more expensive either (if at all, really).

I like that Costco takes Amex, I get myself some more airmiles that way. I just hate that they seem to keen on selling me their own Amex card. I have one, already. I don't need 2.

Yep, only one that i know of to accept is Sam's Club.

It seems strange to me that a store would accept AmEx and not Visa or MasterCard.  I accept AmEx because I have international customers who want to use it.  It is so expnsive and such an enormous pain in the ass to deal with, though, that i find myself wondering several times a year whether I need those sales more than I need freedom from AmEx.  Visa and MC are fast, cheap, and their accounts match the retailer's sales accounts.  I can only think that AmEx is paying these stores not to accept other CC, like they used to do more generally.

What international customers would you have that wouldn't also have Visa or Mastercard?

Here all debitcards can come with either Visa or Mastercard, most banks offer both. AmEx is a rare bird, and most stores wont accept it.

Not computer stuff per se, but at http://www.woot.com/ they have 3w Brinkman flashlights for $10.  WalMart's price for these is $20.  Get a couple so that you ill have one post-Armageddon even if you lose the other.
