QuoteYesterday, rumors were swirling like a tweaker with glo-sticks that Energy 92.7, the city's preferred dance station with a gay bent, will come to an end. Turns out said rumors are, sadly, true. While calls to 92.7 have gone unanswered, word is that the station's new owner is a homophoobic meanie who stomps on puppies and rainbows. Or something like that.
According to SF Examiner's Eric Ross, there was "a big rumor going around [yesterday] that the new owner of Energy 92.7 is very homophobic and he fired a lot of the employees at the radio station." What's more, he compiled exhaustive Facebook research on the subject at hand. Here is just a sample of what went down yesterday:

I may have to go spend money today at a bar I don't like to show support. :(
Go with Satellite Radio. I love mine.
Dance music? It's better off dead.
Also, no one should ever be subjected to Sean Paul and Soulja Boy...let alone on their morning commute.

I like that Sean Paul video where they're having a party in the basement and they start banging on the furnace and the old guy kicks everyone out. WTF were they having a party in his house anyways?

I don't know who those people are. :yeah:
Why would a homophobe buy a SF dance radio station in the first place? this story makes no sense.
It's like a skinhead buying a deli in Boro Park.
Because chances are good that the guy buying it isn't a homophone, but that plays better than "We are being shut down because we don't make any/enough money".

And wouldn't it be illegal for him to fire people based on their sexuality?

That's probably the case, although it is strange that they shutdown so suddenly. I at first thought they were parodying other radio stations.
So, the owner wants to save money and clone his Las Vegas station and that instantly makes him a homophobe?
Gays are the new Black!

Most of the radio station wasn't gay.
But the part that was drug em down. :(
I was astonished to find that there was still a non-NPR radio station with employees. Most FM stations (except the talk ones) seem to be just robotic re-broadcasts of tapes made by master stations, and have maybe one employee to maintain the building.

Up here cities have their own broadcasters. There are a number of competing morning shows in each city, for example.

We've several competing morning shows as well. Until recently, there were 5 that I'd flip between.
Go satellite. It's impossible to let your money do the talking for you with the corporate sponsorship model of free radio. If the sponsors do well, the radio station does well; if the sponsors tank, the station tanks. With satellite, you can pull the plug on your membership fee in this kind of situation and just let accounts receivable put the heat on the program managers. :contract:
Also, you've gone up several points in my book with the Sean Paul and Soulja Boy comment.

It's kinda sad ain't it?

It's called, conveniently, a house party. Pretty popular with the caribbean community in the frozen north.

I don't think that's the question he was asking.

Maybe he should ask again in French.

I just want to know which motherfucker first decided that people wanted to hear
Spanky and Woodchuck on the Morning Zoo laugh at stupid sound effects and use funny voices at 6:00 in the morning; I never want to hear that, much less before I have even had any coffee yet.
I don't listen to talk radio. If I want insane drivel I can talk to friends or relatives.
