Title: Going off to College
Post by: Lettow77 on August 23, 2009, 10:57:06 AM
Its weird, I first came here in freshman year of high school. I'll be heading off to a tinyguts town (and the Kentucky border, caliga) for college this week.

I'll major in history, and go to law school afterwords. My schedule, still tenative, is

marksmanship
intermediate german
latin american history
world civilisations II (what a dinky class)
british literary tradition

A schedule conflict by 15 minutes conspired to keep me out of antebellum history, but that and civil war/reconstruction classes, as well as the other juicy history classes, can only avoid me so long. I start out at the rock bottom in terms of history, but i'll work my way up to things that are relevent. I am thinking about taking constitutional law and christian scripture as well.

Aaah, college!

History is a poor choice for any career except one that has short sleeved button shirts and the saying "would you like fries with that?"

I am aware that history cannot pay bills. However, law really needs no particular path. Business, english or philosophy, probably in that order, would al lbe better candidates than prelaw to go to law school.

I grew up in a law office, though, and slept on a wood floor answering phone calls rather than have a normal home. I have dealt with court extensively, and feel fine regarding law school. I have no anxieties about being a sufficient lawyer.

Tamas: Marksmanship is just a generic easy class to ward off against bad grades. Next semester, it will be archery.

BB, you took geology? In that instance, I am even less worried about taking history.

I initially viewed it as a selfish decision, as I love history but it does not necesarily pay bills, but I am not too worried. In senior year i'll dabble in a few law oriented classes regardless.

Law schools see your entire transcript, BTW, not just the GPA. I don't know how they'd feel about taking a series of classes on archery and marksmanship if the rest of your GPA is weak.

Some colleges require a number of PE courses, so I doubt the Law School would say much.

If you need nothing special to study law under the American system then surely history is a good choice?
Its easy so you'll get decent grades and they certainly do count with law school.

And I second- marksmanship, wtf?

Well, Faeelin is right to question it though.

Ideally you want something that will tie in and help you in the practice of law, and something that shows some academic rigour.  Business undergrads can be helpful for lawschool.  Many science programs can be helpful (sadly, geology not so much).

Depending on the law school they will look at what kind of courses you took, and not just your GPA.  So you want to take courses that show you are a serious student, and not just studying basket-weaving.

I said that with hindsight I wish I'd taken history, because my geology has been of no use to me so I wish I'd studied something that I found more interesting.  That doesn't mean that history would be a good undergrad for law school.

 UT Martin, rather.

Marksmanship really isnt a big deal. My overall GPA will be fine, but a little padding is perfectly acceptable, and I -do- need some sort of activity class here and there. As far as activities go, the ones where I shoot stuff are my clear personal favourites, so thats why archery and marksmanship. A citizen has a responsibility to acquit himself well with firearms.

I understand and previously held y'alls concerns about law school, but its really no problem. My classes will suit me well for law school, as I intend to take classes on constitutional law, rhetoric and the like, but I am not going to go to higher education and neglect history, which is my driving passion.

Edit: I am minoring in business, anyhow. Political science/history/business is a good template for law, I feel.

You should be worried that your wackjob historical opinions will get you into some controversy and blackballed from any law school diligent enough to do a google search or read professor recommendations.

As far as padding the GPA goes, when you apply to law school, you have to submit your transcript to the LSADS. The LSADS re-calculates your GPA according to its standards, which means, among other things, that BS classes are removed from your overall average.

:D You remind me of me when I was your age, young man.  I even had a love affair with the Confederacy going on (including a big stars and bars hanging in my room).  I still love the South, obviously, but have turned my Confederacy-sympathy into a broader love of the Civil War.

Also, I now think Tennessee might be my favorite Southern state after Kentucky.  It used to be Georgia but Atlanta has changed considerably since I was a kid, and entirely for the worse.

Anyway, as for a meetup... given where you'll be going to school, I've been planning for a while to visit Kentucky and Reelfoot Lakes and it looks like you'll be right by there.  No concrete date yet but it'll probably happen in the next year or so.

Why?

I found intro geology to be really interesting.  It's really just a really big history class - the history of the earth.  But it was the 2nd and 3rd year classes that nearly killed me, spending hours staring down a microscope at mineral samples.  Optical Mineralogy FTL. :(

Because I took a couple of geology electives, all with the same professor, who I got to know fairly well and who was doing fascinating work studying the ice sheets in Antarctica.  His name is Dave Marchant and I think he's a well-known global warming guy.  He always took a bunch of his students (including undergrads) with him to Amundsen-Scott Station every year.

I know that sounds like a silly reason but hey, there you go.

Well, okay.

But the serious study of geology involves a lot of deep study of rocks and minerals.  I remember the "black rock and white rock" test, where you were given about 10 white rocks in a row and had to identify them, followed by 10 black rocks.

:bleeding:

I am terrible at rote memorization, and that stuff killed me.  I'm great with concepts and understanding, but ask me the chemical composition of galena?  No way.

(Galena is actually easy and I do remember it even now - everything else was hard)

Most schools require you to take a number of electives outside of your major/minor.  My advice is to take the ones you find interesting, since by defination, they aren't courses that are supposed to be relevant to your field(s).

It's a good opportunity to network and their magazine, The Spectrum, has articles on different areas of electrical engineering.  That might help you focus on an area or a career that you would be interested in.

Marksmanship isn't that ridiculous, I had gone to school at a university in West Virginia that offered Water polo and basket weaving as courses.

I think most schools offer basket weaving or the like (gotta keep the football players academically eligible somehow) but water polo?  What school was that?  I mean, I can see it as an extracurricular activiity, but as a course?

Concord University

There was a Confederate Flag (not the battle flag, but rather the Stars and Bars) flying at the Confederate cemetery at Franklin.

That battlefield made me angry.

One of the greatest Union victories of the war, and very little of it is preserved.  Guess what stands on the site of Pat Cleburne's death?  A FUCKING PIZZA HUT.

"Yes, I'll have my deep dish pizza with peppers, onions, mushrooms, and the blood of an Irishman."

I'd have thought you of all people would have been moved by such a memorial.  ;)

That is the only proper Confederate flag.  The Andrew's Cross one just carries too many racist overtones.

Eh, forget racism--they're both symbols of treason.

What it stood for is in no way subverted by what people -think- it stands for.
