In the spirit of Malthus' strange animal threads, I present to you giant isopod.

Looks disgusting. And Evil.
Remember, the uglier the thing from the sea is the tastier it is :contract:
Compound eyes are always freaky

The first pic does look cool. Like Mercury coated eyes.
looks like a movie prop.
Ugh, creepy.
Deep sea gigantism strikes again. God, what a disgusting creature.

Isn't that thing like a giant ocean-dwelling bedbug, basically? IIRC it's closely related to bedbugs, or public lice, or something.
It would be a bitch to wake up one morning and find that gnawing on your balls. On the plus side a chick covered with those things would be relatively easy to spot.

Yeah, it's related to the woodlouse. I think the movie Cloverfield based its creepy-crawlies on these... things. :o
I never knew Gregor Samsa had children.
So...what is this thing? Where is it from?
Surely not deep sea- its surviving on land there....And don't deep sea things explode even at higher sea levels?...but...everything checks out saying it is indeed where its from. Odd.
QuoteGiant isopods are of little interest to most commercial fisheries owing to the typical paucity of catches and because ensnared isopods are usually scavenged beyond marketability before they are recovered. However, in Northern Taiwan and other areas, they are not uncommon at seaside restaurants, served boiled and bisected with a clean lateral slice. The white meat, similar to crab or lobster in texture, is then easily removed.
That's fucked up.
Oh man, that's horrifying. :D
Aren't those also called sea cockroaches?

Yup. :)
It looks an awful lot like a trilobite, though I don't suppose it is related. Also a bit like a horseshoe crab.
Kill them! Kill them all!!!!!!!!

As a canadian i can easily find a goalie mask to protect myself from the son of Chutelo (sp). Besides, as a cat owner, you should be aware if for watever reason you die in your home your cat will eat you. It's what they do lol
???
That one is too big.

Well, I think they should call it "the
Tiny Isopod", just to horrify people *more*. ;D

Hey, at least the cats wait for you to die first. I wouldn't trust that thing to be so patient. :D
Edit: in this pic it does sort of look cuddlesome:

They could call it by it's true name, "Tiny Great Old One" and I'd still run from it, lest they'd invade my dreams and show me sights no man was meant to see, dreaming cities etc.
I thought this thread was another BB/Mart gayfest.

... they could survive in a New York sewer.
Okay, maybe not. But I like to think that they are down there, along with the white pot plants and the blind alligators. ;)

Sow Bugs are crustaceans, not insects, makes perfect sense that form wise they'd look very similar. Their exoskeletal structure is pretty effective as far as these things go.
imagine it boiled, split in two and dripping with butter. MMMM good.
