I have an eye doctor appointment next Wednesday and have been thinking about getting transition lenses so I don't always need to carry two pairs of glasses around. If I get transitions, I'll probably leave my old prescription sunglasses on the boat.
My dad had transition lenses in the 80s and they always seemed to 'turn on' at weird times, and he found them annoying and eventually ditched them. I wonder if they've been improved since then?
Other:
Laser eye surgery.

You'll get freaked out and fall over if you look down at the ground suddenly.

I dunno if I am a candidate. My vision = horrendously poor. Uncorrected it's like 20/800 with severe astigmatism (85/92).
OTOH a friend of mine back in Mass. had it done like 5 years ago and his vision was rendered instantly perfect... he said his vision was about as bad as mine (but I don't think he's right).
Just get these:

Maybe Monkeyslut can FedEx you his wheelie.
Go for it.
I had them before I got contacts. I took a little bit of time to get used to but if you wear sunglasses they rock.

Nice, it took six responses before I got a serious one. -_-

Like hell. The rental on those things is outrageous.
I think my vision insurance covers like 50% of the cost.
I've been thinking of getting Lasik done. But I can't get over the fear that the lasers will blind me.
I have transition lenses; they work fine. The only real problem is they don't transition when you're driving, as the windows are UV filtered.
Try them out. I had one pair of transitions, the first I ever used, that worked well. So I figured to get another pair when I needed to change prescription. But I was unable to get used to another transition set for really any use, close up or far away, even after having them adjusted, changed, etc. I wound up getting bi-focals in the small bottom corners for reading; works great. I have bi-focals on distance glasses and glasses I use for computer work. I probably don't even need computer glasses to see well but it helps lessen eye strain.

Oh man, really? That sucks. :(
I've had them for years, I say yes. They are so worth it.
Those comericials look pretty fruity. I wouldn't try it.

You know what? I was thinking of the glasses that have distance/mid/close lenses all in one. Takes some getting used to.
Transitions are a whole different thing, my bad.
I've heard that the transition lenses are only good for about 4 years. The source is from someone selling them. So the real lifespan is going to be considerably less.
Mono I get the feeling you're confusing transition lenses with the ones that get dark when you go outside. Transition lenses are like bifocals (you know what those are?) that geeently transistion between the reading part and the distance viewing part.

I think those are called progressive lenses, dude.
Transition lenses, AFAIK = photochromic lenses.
:face:
Carry on Mono.
My total bill was like $180 and that included the exam plus new glasses, which will be ultra high index plus transitions and these kickass new kind of frames that are very pliable and would like never break (the optician showed me... you can bend them like almost 180 degrees and they won't snap in the middle).
The bad thing is I have a: hole in my retina on my left eye.
They took a bunch of pics of my eyes and made them 3D (which was awesome), and the optometrist showed me... I have like a pinpoint, perfectly round hole in my retina and there are patches of pigment (which he said is like scar tissue) around it. He said if this didn't come up in my last eye appointment then it must be something that came up within the last 5-6 years.
I told him I have some inturned eyelashes and I asked if my rubbing of them could be the problem, and he said he didn't think so, though he removed one of them on my right eye for me.
Anyway, he wants to see me again in two months to see if the hole is healing or getting worse. If the latter, I will need: laser surgery!
