I vaguely remember answering a phone survey a couple of weeks ago. Today in the mail I received a brochure (complete with a $2 coin) inviting us to be a ratings family, and they followed up with a phone call tonight.
It's an interesting system. Everyone in the family (including the kids) are supposed to wear a small device, around the size of a small cellphone. It passively listens in to a signal embedded in any TV or radio signals you are listening to. They in turn will pay $5-$10 per month per person.
What say you Languish? Should the Barrister family participate?

Privacy trumps a few pennies.

They say it doesn't listen to audible noise, just for these electronic signals embedded in the shows.
Why not? I did a week or so of Nielsen radio rating a cuppa five years back.

It would amuse me when someone realizes there is a huge spike in the ratings of Winnipeg Jets games in Edmonton. :)
Would you be using your power for good or evil?

They ask more than one family at a time. :secret:
Yes.
I've been trying to be one for a decade now. (Need to get the Quebec TVA numbers, way way down.)

There's only about 4500 families, or 11000 people, nationwide. When you break that down to individual markets, one person could have quite the impact. :shifty:

when they don't register any TVA signal, they discard the data as an anomaly. :P
Bargain for more money.
I always wanted one of those, then again, that's why people that work in the media are barred from participating. :P
Incidentally, I remember a movie where the main character was a failed TV writer that becomes an overnight success when he finds the list of houses that have the system installed, and sneaks inside to tune them to his shows while the families are away. Anybody else has seen it and remembers the title?

Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.
No. Why the hell would you?

But it's Free* stuff man, why would you?
*defined as no apparent costs, just hidden ones.
Sounds like a PITA for $10, even putting aside privacy concerns.

To demonstrate our support for various media that we like?
Plus, you know, for the experience of it?
Anyways I signed us up yesterday. The monitors should show up in the next week or two.
Actually they showed up today. Together with a nice, crisp $20 bill.
It's an interesting system. It's a little device, maybe the size of an old-fashioned pager, you wear or carry in a pocket. When you carry it around you earn points, which in turn helps you earn your extra $5/month plus chances at some draws or prizes. Very gamified. The device even shows you how many points you are earning.
What I found amusing is they ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement. You're not to tell anyone you're a Numeris household! :o (luckily I haven't signed it yet :shifty:). I doubt I'll just mysteriously tell people I'm part of a "research project" like they suggest, but yeah I guess I shouldn't mention it on Facebook.
But really surprised they expect me to get my five year old to sign this agreement. I guess I'll do it, just for the amusement of seeing him scrawl "JOSHUA", potentially with some backwards letters.
I actually listen to a fair bit of radio on my phone via downloaded podcasts from earlier in the day. That can actually count, but I have to wire in my phone, to the device, and then to my headphones. Not sure if I'm going to follow through with that or not. As far as the points are concerned they only care if you are wearing it, not that you are necessarily listening to anything.
So what shows are you planning to get uncancelled?
Your whole family has to carry a pager for $10/month?
Does this only track broadcast TV/radio behavior, or does it include streaming services?
Numeris does track it, I don't know if they use BBs method for it tho.

You just need to wear a wireless device close to your balls. No biggie.
