Title: Photos of South Korea, 1959
Post by: jimmy olsen on June 12, 2016, 10:41:31 PM
Some awesome photos of Seoul and Deagu can be found here. Amazing how much the country has changed in just three generations.

I was born not long after that, in 63.  I distinctly remember all the taxis being surplus jeeps.

For lunch? The cafeteria serves rice, soup, some kind of meat/fruit that I'll usually eat. Also some kimchi and wretched fermented vegetables that I won't.

For dinner I eat whatever I want.

When my mom was in high school (late 50s/early 60s) they used to collect money and relief items to send over to South Korea, as that was viewed as one of the poorest/neediest parts of the world at the time.  I guess the war didn't help things much.

Seems like they're doing a bit better now :)

The people in those pictures have no way of knowing that their children and grandchildren will basically just play starcraft all day.

We got used to seeing Korea with a character.

It means that Tyr has a poor opinion of Korea based on superficial exposure. You know, unlike most other places and subjects.

I think Derspiess has some British heritage, as I took his statement to be deliberate understatement.  :bowler:

I don't know, Jacob. Superficially the South Koreans seem to be doing a lot better, but the next generation is being taught english by tim.

Modern Korea has had the character squeezed out.
There's not much of a unique Korean feel about. Just a sort of America-Japan hybrid.
Maybe the 'real' Korea is hidden in the countryside as in Japan. But the cities just don't feel too unique.

Huh...really? What exactly does that mean? Because that sounds weird. I mean Japan and America are not exactly tastes that mix harmoniously together.

... and it's not like Japan hasn't been hugely influenced by the US either.

It is because we can all talk to and appropriate influence each other's culture. The emergence of an international society and culture is coming.

Poverty isn't character.  It's just being hungry.  The South Korean miracle is impressive.  They've gone from a war-torn 3rd world dictatorship to a rich democracy.  Let North Korea have "character", let South Korea have wealth and freedom.
