 What the fuck does this mean?

It means that Tyr has a poor opinion of Korea based on superficial exposure. You know, unlike most other places and subjects.

QuoteOh, and just a bit better Derspiess?

Check this out: what Derspiess was on about.

I don't know, Jacob. Superficially the South Koreans seem to be doing a lot better, but the next generation is being taught english by tim.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Strange to see Korea with character

Modern Korea has had the character squeezed out.
There's not much of a unique Korean feel about. Just a sort of America-Japan hybrid.
Maybe the 'real' Korea is hidden in the countryside as in Japan. But the cities just don't feel too unique.

Huh...really? What exactly does that mean? Because that sounds weird. I mean Japan and America are not exactly tastes that mix harmoniously together.

You know, I usually try to understand your point of view but you really are a putz sometimes.

... and it's not like Japan hasn't been hugely influenced by the US either.

It is because we can all talk to and appropriate influence each other's culture. The emergence of an international society and culture is coming.

Poverty isn't character.  It's just being hungry.  The South Korean miracle is impressive.  They've gone from a war-torn 3rd world dictatorship to a rich democracy.  Let North Korea have "character", let South Korea have wealth and freedom.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
