I had a conversation with a co-worker today regarding Good Friday as a holiday. He thought that it was a given that companies give that day off work. It got me thinking about it. Growing up in Iowa and then moving to Illinois, Good Friday has never been a state holiday, so I never thought about it being a Federal one. My co-worker has only ever had jobs in Indiana - where it is a state holiday - and in Illinois at very small companies owned by very religious individuals.
So who gets this Friday off work? And how does it work for Eastern Orthodox people with their different Easter calendar?
State Holiday.
BUT you can work and get comp time which you can then use to take your other Easter day off.
Friday off, work on Monday.
Nope, not a federal holiday, so taxpayers money will allow the posting of crap on languish..

How long has it been a state holiday there?
I get extra vacations days and Sunday pay for working on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and 2nd Easter Day (Monday).
Electoral campaigns do not suffer Holidays, so I am working this Good Friday but from home, which mitigates it.

Uh...no idea. The current slate of Holidays has been in existence since 1993 so that is the law the gets referred to. Cesar Chavez Day next week is also a State Holiday. Wahoo!
Good Friday is a statutory holiday, so I get it off.
Easter Monday is also a holiday for provincial employees.
That's right - 4 day weekend coming up for me.

"Maundy Thursday"?? "2nd Easter Day"??
What are those?? And what are the religious significance to those?
Nope, because I'm self employed. It is an official holiday all over Spain otherwise. Depending on the region also thursday or monday. In my region it's today and on monday there's a local one, so people here can have a 5 day holiday these days.
Off Friday and Monday as bank holidays.

In theory, Friday is a holiday here.
But you know what lawyers in private practice say about weekends: "only two (in this case, three) more billable days until Monday!". :D
We have it off this year; we haven't in the past. (We used to have MLK Jr. day off; but didn't this year.)
In Colombia the entire Holy Week (Semana Santa) was a major holiday season. The resort our project was headquartered out of was filled to capacity that week.

The Thursday is the day Jebus washed his disciples' feet, I don't know what Maudy means but we call it "Skærtorsdag" and it means Clean Thursday. And Easter Monday is him meeting his disciples.
Also, most people in Denmark (except retail/medical) takes the entire week off getting a 10 day holiday.

Not at UTHSCSA. It's just a regular work day.
We do have the 22nd as one of those mission critical days next month though.

In the United States we usually call "Maundy Thursday", "Holy Thursday." In Britain "Holy Thursday" is the Feast of the Ascension (or at least it was in Blake's time. That's what the poems "Holy Thursday"from Songs of Innocence (http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/172917) and Songs of Experience (http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/172918) refer to.)
Never had Good Friday off as far as I can remember. I don't get paid holidays or vacation with my current gig anyway.

I didn't get it off at UT Austin either. The Universities have a different schedule.

We get either Friday or Monday off, employer's choice. In my line of work, it's both for most employees, so I usually take Monday and work on Friday while everyone is at home and nobody calls me.
Technically yes, but in practice it is another day of vacation that can be taken at any time.
Luckily, at least half of my work (tech/management) is done from home, so I don't care too much about holidays or vacation. I am still in my underwear in front of a computer.
I'll be working this Friday, but that's because I'm a freelancer. Most businesses will be closed tomorrow in here.

Kindof a bummer. I like those mission critical days, because they tend to be more quiet and as you said, you get comp days for them. When I was less lazy and would show up for them (my department doesn't have any "critical" stuff in that sense, but we can be here if we want, and researchers seem to be all obsessive-like so they're always around), I'd just sit and watch movies all day with my empty inbox on the other screen. I don't think anyone really knew I was here.

Project Management consulting. I can take time off; I just don't get paid for it. But that's a small sacrifice for the flexibility I have working from home, plus making almost twice what I used to get in my previous job.

That sounds like the bit then. When I was in New York, I could work from home everyday but they also let me have paid vacation. :D

The Queen hands out Maundy money to the same number of deserving individuals as her age every year. Seeing as she's 90 it's getting expensive

You mean pentecost and ascension thursday? Not completely random.
The company I work for did away with paid holidays and, technically, vacations. Instead, now we accumulate paid time off that we can use whenever we want (within reason, and with prior notice) so anyone can turn any day into a paid holiday for themselves.
Three day weekends are an affront to human reason.
For such a Catholic country as ours we have only Easter Monday off.

LOL, I am cash-and-carry as well; no sick time, no vacation time, no holidays, no benefits--I don't work, I don't eat. Unfortunately, it's about what I made when I was 22 years old, but that's a small sacrifice for the flexibility of wondering if Today is My Last Day at Work .
Rather liberating actually, as I get to be all "living-in-the-moment" about it, like a living-on-the-edge Millennial with a mortgage. It's so much more exciting that way! :yeah:

The blinkered, simpleton naivete of uber Christians is absolutely adorable, especially when they're being all Baptisty and whatnot.
The kind of Ned Flanders types that are totally oblivious to good taste, because Christ loves them and everybody in fucking traffic has to know it, too.
So...Super Baptist Boy calls me today--
SBB: "So you're in today? Holding down the fort all by yourself, since everybody's out?"
CdM: "No, M------- is here, too."
SBB: "Oh, really? I thought she'd have taken off today."
CdM: "I don't see why she would."
SBB: "Well, even though some people may go about it differently, it's still, you know, a spiritual day and she's pretty spiritual."
CdM: "I'm sure they do, but I don't think M------'s got anything in her Outlook about it, what with her being Jewish and all."
