Wait great as an actor or great as a football player?
The Cincinnati Bengals that have been acting their entire football careers.

The best actor.
Voted other: Woody Strode.
Tossup between Crews and Weathers, I'll go with Weathers 'cause he was Apollo fucking Creed.

Same, but equally for getting a stew on.
Fred Williamson for his career from Blaxploitation to Italo(-Turkish) B-movie.
O.J. He acted quite innocently.
Fred Dwyer? But no Ed Marinaro?
Fucking amateur hour.
Easy, Jim Brown.

If you're going to complain about someone being on the list, complain about Bradshaw. Dryer was a perfectly convincing private detective or whatever Hunter was to a young child.
Terry Bradshaw was in Cannonball Run. Advantage: Burt Reynolds.
Ed Marinaro finished 2nd in Heisman voting despite going to Cornell and being afflicted with White Running Back Syndrome, and Hill Street Blues was on "Must See TV" Thursdays. Hunter was buried on Tuesdays, when people masturbated.

I sure many did when Stephanie Kramer was on-screen.
Didn't know Weathers was in the NFL.
Voted Brown because he was such an awesome player.
If rating the best actor on the list, at least in terms of popular success, I think it has to be the rock. He is a bona fide leading man and movie star.
You were wrong on both counts. :P
You're supposed to choose the best actor who played in the NFL. Not the best player and not some guy who almost got in the NFL. (That's the Canuck Jaron option).
Jim Thorpe

Dwayne Jonson almost got into the CFL. He never played in the CFL. He's probably the best actor on the list. I'm going for Alex Karras as the best that actually qualified. He could play the thug or tough guy like the others, but also had acting range.
Wiki says he was on the Calgary team and cut two months into the season.
Dick Butkus.

I was thinking about Dick. What was he in?

Mostly a lot of guest spots on 70s and 80s TV series.
JUICE!
If you allow write-ins from soccer, Pele was in a shitty WWII movie with Sly Stallone and some of Europe's finest. I think it was called "Escape to victory".

Vinnie Jones transitioned seamlessly from football thug to movie thug. He's managed to be in some decent movies too.

It was titled
Victory. At least, that was the US title; it might have had a different title in other markets.

It was "Evasión o victoria" (Escape or victory) over here, which makes sense given the plot.

He never made the team. He was on the practice squad or d-league or whatever they called that back then.

No, you're most likely right.
It's been 25 years or so since I saw it.
Norwegian footballer Hallvard Thoresen had a small part.
Tough call between a few good options. I'm going with my sentimental favorite and the unlisted John Matuszak. He played for my favorite team (Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders)and he was in my favorite movie as a child (The Goonies). I'm disappointed he didn't make the list. <_<
Oh, that was an Oscar-worthy performance there.

Definitely Escape to Victory in the UK. As well as Sly and Pele, it had Ossie Ardilles, Bobbie Moore, Michael Caine and a bunch of other footballers.

Sly was the goalie, I remember. The Germans were suitably evil.
Of course, you'd throw the midget in as the goalie.
I think I need to find it and watch it again.

There's a Spanish company that makes replicas of classic & retro footie shirts that has made a model like the one Stallone wears, in case anyone is interested. :P

I saw a chunk of it again a year or so ago. It's not a great film by any means but brought back some great memories of being a football mad kid in the later 70s/early 80s - John Wark, Mike Summerbe, Ipswich's glory days, Ozzie's army...
