My main "work area", ie computer, desk, bookcases, etc. is in my basement. However, there are also visible spiders encamped around. Should I kill them because they are creepy, or do they serve another more important purpose such as eating unwanted pests?

Just a few here and there. Perhaps 5-10 (visibly) distributed throughout the room with each having its own nook and cranny,

How often do spiders have to eat? You might have an insect problem, especially since it's likely that there are spiders you can't see.
I leave spiders alone. They are merely biological alternatives to chemicals we would use in a heartbeat.
I have one nasty spider who grows his web on the outside of the window next to my workstation. He enjoys making me see him stalk and kill the insects that fly into the web overnight while he and I are sleeping. Bastard!
I consider spiders to be unwanted pests and therefore, they should die.

Years of living alone have warped your brain.
Kill the spiders. Use lizards to eat up any stray insects.
The local spider union and I have reached an understanding; if they are outside I ignore them, if they are in my house they get flushed down the shitter with no questions asked.

Lizards are too independent to be reliable. :(
Besides, spiders don't plot to take over the world.

What exactly is "killing the environment"? The one extra flush a week or the spider in the shit pond?
If you are worried about the one extra flush don't, I use much, much less water than the average household. :)
If you are worried about the spider in the shitpond, then I am curious.
Spiders are our friends.
That they are there should be a comfort to you, not a worry.
I used to have a house-spider. I named him "spidey". Grew to a massive size and used to scamper across the floor to check out his various webs throughout the appartment. I once tried to feed him a large beetle, but he was not amused. I think it fucked up one of his webs. :Embarrass:
I consider the spiders to be a loose ally in my eternal struggle to exterminate other more annoying insects. So I dont stomp on them outside the house.
But, the bigger (central european sizes, so dont think that big) versions creap me the hell out so if I find a spider in my rooms, it is dead. Anyways a spider web is the sign of a seriously not-maintained room.

Or a basement appartment.
Regardless, ever since the hookers/roaches incident, I regard spiders with an acute fondness.
Enemy of my enemy.
Leave the little ones be, stomp the medium ones, cower in fear from the big ones.
I like having spiders around, the only negative side is when their webs get into inconvenient places or look ugly. I'd rather have them sitting in the corner minding their own business than flying insects bugging me.
This is the UK though bare in mind where we have nothing that can harm you in the slightest. I may well think different if I were in Australia or some other similar place where every living thing is out to kill you.
I usually catch the larger ones and throw them outside, so that the cat doesn't eat them.
House centepides on the other hand get stomped without mercy.

When I was about 13, I closed my drapes at night......to find the largest insect I've ever seen, a massive female centipede, peacefully clinging to my drapes. I've been supremely terrified of them ever since.

For most arthropods the females are bigger, and this motherfucker was huge. Always presumed it was.

Sounds more like a pet spider. :D
And a pet with a macabre sense of humor. :menace:
I only bother spiders when they web up in stupid area like the doorway, or someplace else i'm going to get webbed. I'm only getting rid of the dumb spiders.

I tend to kill the spiders in my house as then have a nasty habit of biting me in my sleep.

But was it huge compared to the males of its species?
Seeing a big spider doesn't tell you it is a female, unless you see a big particular species of spider, that you know is large compared to others of its species - and this is presuming that your claim about the females being bigger is a valid determinant of sex to begin with.
This ends Berkut's pedantic grump of the day.

Horrible. Mice are vermin, but they're still mammals, and must always be sided with over monstrosities like that thing.

I find spiders to be rather horrible, although useful. The way in which their heads are constructed is unpleasantly alien.

That's still among the worst things I've ever seen. Whoever made that should be fed to hundreds of giant centipedes. Mice die by the hands of owls, cats or something. NOT FUCKING ARTHROPODS.
They should have fed Neda to centipedes.

Your provincialism is showing.
Hmm... it seems that small mammals are inferior, going by the youtube videos of centipedes devouring mice and piranhas doing the same. Makes me think of eons ago when giant 3 meter centipedes roamed the forest floor.

Depends on how you look at it. Mammals are much hardier than insects, especially the large ones. That's why the world is ours.

Given that it's part of an extinct family, I'm willing to accept an approximation. ALthough it more resembles a millipede.
