Title: Is any of your relatives a famous/known/notorious person?
Post by: Pedrito on October 13, 2015, 02:03:51 PM
Inspired by the Old/New World relatives thread,

is anyone here related to some known (meaning the person somewhat gained some kind of fame during or after life) person here?

Me, by marriage I've acquired a quite famous (in Italy) TV and newspapers journalist and writer,
and a top-level football player of 20 years ago, one of the first italian players to go playing and then coaching abroad in the late nineties.

My maternal grandfather was a member of the Korean legislature and got a fancy schmancy state funeral.

As a kid my father was the sports columnist for the local paper.  This being in the days before the internet it was a big deal at the time, so I'd always get asked if I was related to him.

My great-great uncle was one of the founders and first president of one of Spain's largest basketball clubs. He wasn't famous himself but the club is (over here).

My brother was a sports anchor for the local telly, so he's sorta known around town.

That's about it.

Who!?? Ravanelli?

My name here is very inspired by the most notorious man in my family. Not particularly famous but he worked for king Christian IX as keeper of the royal hunting grounds. Very drunken man who later opened a now semi-famous restaurant.

My uncle is a dirigent and componist apparently known in the classical music circles over here. My girlfriends uncle won an etappe in the tour of France 1980 and two etappes in the Vuelta 1973. He cycled as helper of Eddy Merx. Her nephew has been Belgian champion jumping (horse) a couple of years ago.

I had a great uncle who ran with Capone.  They never did find out where he's buried.  Some more recently who are cut from the same cloth.  I'm distantly related to Shelby Foote.  There's a monument to one my ancestors in Connecticut.

Famous? No, well known? Depends on your definition of well known.

My grandfather from my mom's side was well known in PR, he was the first rican superintendant of the Methodist Church in PR, he and his church was responsible for the little town/community to exist/grow.

My grandfather from my dad's side was the barber in his town, he was extremely well known in his town.

I remember in university I had a lecturer who worshipped your aunt.  It got totally ridiculous as she mentioned her almost every other sentence.   I swore that I would not read any of her books as revenge.  Never imagined that I would talk to one of her relatives in this fashion after all these years

My cousin is married to a Union boss :)  I have another cousin that is married to Genovese in the banking industry.  That's his actual name as well. You'd think with name that well known you'd change it or something. Some who are blood relatives I don't want to mention do stuff around St. Louis.  Don't worry, I have no talent for that kind of work.  Well, I kinda do, but I makes you feel real bad afterwords.  Anyway, those guys are bores and louts.

My grandfather had controlling shares and was president (later Chairman of the Board) of William Morrow Publishing.

There are some other fun people on this side of my family, but that is enough.

My great-uncle was a mid-level TV producer (mostly for the USA Network, not sure if it's still around) and high-level L.A. sleaze who always had young casting-couch girlfriends.  He was in Rao's in NY once when it got shot up in a mob beef in the early 90s and was mentioned in the Post. :)

EDIT:  Looking him up he is noted for his work on made-for-TV movie Legion of Fire: Killer Ants! (released in Germany as Marabunta) among other things.

My great uncle was a philanderer and a popular insult around his time was to tell someone to go "cry to their father Joe" (ie you were the bastard son on my uncle). I always found that amusing.

So not "Famous" Famous, but famous enough in his city to be the origin of an insult.

I have a good friend whose father used to be a dubbing actor for our regional television, and during his career he dubbed hundreds and hundreds of characters. One of his more iconic performances is the dubbing of Cheech Marin's character in "From dusk till dawn". When they showed that film on tv, my friend was watching it with his family, and when that character appears, in his role as announcer from the bar advertising the girls on it (the "pussy" monologue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVgdYFmtmtM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVgdYFmtmtM)), my friend says that the whole family's mouths dropped to the ground and turned to his dad, and he said something like "Oh, yeah, I did that one a bit ago, didn't remember it anymore".

To this day to many people who don't know my friend that much he still is the son of the guy who did the pussy monologue in that film.

Hmmm... my mom's cousin is - or rather was - one of the primary ideologues of the Danish People's Party, and he was quite topical for a decade or two in Danish politics.

My step-dad's great-uncle (?)(some sort of relation) was a Jewish "adventurer" (family lore has him as a mobster) known as Two-Gun Cohen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Cohen_(adventurer)), who later ended up as a bodyguard for Dr. Sun-Yat Sen.

On my dad's side, I'm told my (great?-)great-grandfather's brother was Bob Fitzsimmons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Fitzsimmons), a bare-knuckle boxer and the first three-division champion. I can believe it, because he looks a lot like my dad.

On my mom's side, the "black sheep" of the family was a great-uncle who was a Jewish gangster involved in rum-running during the Prohibition era ... but who wasn't very good at gangster-dom: he ended up getting murdered by rival gangsters.

Family lore has it that he was shot so many times, they had to sweep up the bits and bury him in a bag!

British - English really - and more than a drop. My biological dad was - and still is I presume - English, which he described as a mixture of English, Irish, Scottish and more, all mixed in the metropolis of London. He's a bit of a character, and I can spin a few yarns about him when the occasion calls for it.

The Danish side of the family has both Norwegians and Prussians (vons, no less) when you go back a few generations (with the Prussians being a bit further back).

My grandfather once commissioned someone to design a family coat of arms. He traced the family back to the 15th century looking for inspiration but didn't find anyone that ever did anything remotely interesting. The matter was then quietly dropped.

I just drop the Robert the Bruce thing because it's interesting, and my great-grandmother actually went to Scotland and used the headstones and a ton of primary sources to trace back how we're related.  That family tree is enormous, and knowing my great-grandmother's penchant for history (she was a higher-up in the Pennsylvania Historical Society), that tree is probably a lot less error-prone than other family trees of that size.

JP Morgan is pretty much the butt of family jokes.  He was the uncle (IIRC) of my great-great grandmother, and went complete douchebag and refused to talk to the less wealthy side of the family.

Yeah, same side of the family as the Jesse James thing. Grandma wouldn't let us talk about either one.

[I love those insane sounding KKK titles  :D]

My family is rather unremarkable.

Two of my paternal uncles fought the nazis and the communists and got the highest level military medals from the underground state (little good it did them, as one of them was killed by the nazis and the other by communists). My paternal grandfather was a kulak who died of a heart attack after his sons were killed (my dad was one of thirteen children).

My maternal grandfather was also in the anti-communist resistance (and he was imprisoned during the post-war era). Too bad he was a fucking asshole who terrorised my grandmother, my mum and my aunt (who ended up single, depressed, schizophrenic and died a couple of years ago).

Yeah. :P

It's just funny that people who are "heroes" often end up as assholes in their private lives. Or perhaps it's not funny - one's emotional capacity can only stretch that thin, I suppose.

I have a couple brothers who might become famous for all the wrong reasons...well, no, even that isn't true. They are too petty and pathetic to even become criminally notable.

If the KKK had instead focused on the persecution of Kender I might have joined up.

My dad discovered it because the pic was in his history textbook in junior high.

We don't know much about it though, because grandma was apparently incredibly ashamed of her dad's...extracurricular activities. He might be a murderer for all we know. I do know great grandad was a barber, and had several shops. Where the hair of all the most horrible people in Appalachia was cut.

If you think about it, it's the obvious best thing to do if you're a subversive dick in 1935.

How awesome would it be to have the car with that original tag, and show it with the picture in the history textbook.

Oh my god, my grandma would have had a stroke or something. It's probably buried very deep in some coal mine, waiting for the sun to expand.

I understand your grandma been ashamed, but history is cool, simple as that. And any physical connection to history would be awesome to have.

BTW, you did not give us much about the other well notorious family member. I hope we mean the one that rode horses and not the one that rides motorcycles?

Well, my grandmother spied for the Nazis in Tschechoslovakia.  She would bring reports of Czech troop positions over the border to the Wehrmacht.  The border police didn't suspect a 20-year-old girl of being a spy. After the annexation she was invited to Berlin to meet the Führer and promptly fainted in his arms.

Her brother in law, my great uncle, ended the war a Colonel in the Waffen-SS, captured in Budapest in 1945 and spent 10 years in Siberia.

I am reminded of a moment in Middle School where we reached the Normandy invasion and the teacher asked if any of us had grandparents who participated in the battle. Two kids raised their hands and she asked one of them what unit his grandfather was in. The kid answered 'the 21st Panzer Division'

That was awkward

I am thankfully not related to the Canadian douchecanoe Michael Ignatieff or his family. I am also not related to famed Australian painter Alexander Ignatiev. My ex-wife is Conway Twitty's sixth cousin.
