Bad timing.  I am almost sober.
I have a few non things to say.
Google sucks. Apple more.
I have fed many people to the worms.
But they have all been bad guys.
I have never shot a woman, and I thank the G-d of my forefathers for that.
I have dropped a few kids, 12 and above, but they were all actively engaging my boys.
I have dropped a few guys that were unarmed, but they were bad guys.
I KNOW I have always done right.
Yet why do I feel this emptiness?
Why do I always feel the need to explain to myself that I was on the right?

Fuck it man. Do not ever go to war.
It does not matter whatever justification you can conjure. There os no peace for the soldier.

Fuck. It is so fuckin complecated.
You have to defend your country, no doubt about it.
But do not fuckin volunteer for stupid wars plase.

Fuck man.

I think the clip answered the question. She drowned herself in the river.

Caught by the narrator hooking up with another guy in his car, she knew she disappointed and possibly lost the only guy who loved her and was treating her as a human being deserving love. Rather than reaching for him and seeking his forgiveness, she took the easy way out and killed herself, overwhelmed by shame. However, he was widely seen as a weirdo, and he was the last person to have seen her alive. Her death turned his life into one of torment by police and persecution by a small, tight-knit community, forcing him out of Hazard after his trailer park home was burned down by arson. After cutting his hair to symbolically start his life anew, he left for an unknown destination, leaving his life of suffering behind.

That's a reasonable theory, but hardly made certain. The narrator could have killed her and gotten off for lack of evidence. Or a third party could have killed her. We don't see her drowning herself.

Was he a member of the seduction community, though?

Yes, it's pretty clear when he takes a stone and caves her skull in.

Edit: Granted, the album's title, "Murder Ballads" sort of gives it away too.

Still a good song and an album I quite rate even after all these years.
"Henry Lee" is another excellent Nick Cave song.
