Rather than reaching for him and seeking his forgiveness, she took the easy way out and killed herself, overwhelmed by shame. However, he was widely seen as a weirdo, and he was the last person to have seen her alive. Her death turned his life into one of torment by police and persecution by a small, tight-knit community, forcing him out of Hazard after his trailer park home was burned down by arson. After cutting his hair to symbolically start his life anew, he left for an unknown destination, leaving his life of suffering behind.

That's a reasonable theory, but hardly made certain. The narrator could have killed her and gotten off for lack of evidence. Or a third party could have killed her. We don't see her drowning herself.
