Apparently there's a heated internet discussion about whether this dress is black/blue or gold/white.

I see it Gold/White.
The dress is actually blue and black. That shot is heavily overexposed or something.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT, did you just edit that post?

Yes but I think whoever sees the picture as blue and black or close to it needs to fucking stop using a near pitch-black monitor

That has nothing to do with it. I use a dark monitor & I see it has white & gold.
That actually freaked me out a bit, but apparently it's the brain playing tricks as usual. It has to do with what light setting you perceive there is, if like me you thought it was back lighting and that the colours was underplayed you would see white and gold, but when you know it's really heavy lighting it clearly becomes black and blue.
Syt is 18% gray.

So yeah, I was getting kinda frustrated that I couldn't will myself to see it blue/black, even though I understand that those are the correct colors.
I've now looked at a few articles, including ones where they balanced the picture to show the real colors clearly, and now the original pictures suddenly are clearly bleached blue/black.
(Though looking at it longer it fades back to white/gold. I'm never again giving Ancient Greeks for distinguishing colors by light vs. dark rather than hue and having one word that might mean dark blue/dark green/brown/black/... and others that might mean light blue/light green/yellow/...).
The dress is a lie?

I still see white and gold, but I don't know what the fuss is all about, it is a badly made photo displayed on a myriad of monitors with a myriad of picture settings etc. Now, if the clothing could produce this effect when seen directly by people, THAT would be interesting. But it doesn't, of course, because on the non-fucked up photos I see the original colours.

having looked at the image data in Gimp, I think this illusion only works because the colors are greyscale. "Grey" is created by setting the red, green, and blue channels to the same value. The image creates the shadowing effect on the chessboard by shifting the intensity of the grey value, which means changing the three channels by the same amount. The shadow in the cylinder requires adjusting the balance of the channels, thus the colors will still look different when taken out of context.

QuoteSo the entire world is melting down over the color of this dress. Some people see white and gold. Others see blue and black.
I've now (somehow) seen both, looking at the same image, at different times.
I've also been trying to understand how this is possible all morning, and this image below finally helped me do that. Basically, when looking at the photo of the dress, our brains are trying to figure out if it's a blue/black dress in yellow light or a white/gold dress with a blue shadow over it.
To us, both of those things render about the same, so our brains have to make a snap decision.

The general premise is sound, though. "Color" is the portion of the visible spectrum not absorbed by the object in question. Thus, the appearance of the object will change based on the actual spectral content of the light illuminating the object.

I have always wonder how differently we experience qualia like colors. Since everyone can only see through their own eyes (except blind people), there is no way to know if the blue someone else sees is perceived exactly the same as you perceive it.

I seem to recall a study that vocabulary plays a role, too, in that if you have more words in a language to distinguish between shades then you will also find it easier to perceive the differences.
And also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinction_of_blue_and_green_in_various_languages
Yeah. I find it really fascinating that so everyone is naturally seeing it in such totally different ways and that, despite all the explanations I've read and real pictures I've seen I can't, no matter how much I try, see that dress as blue and black.
It's like an optical illusion that makes sense but that you still can't see.
I've since moved firmly to the blue/black camp, and have trouble to see it white/gold for more than a split second before it "morphs" back in to its real colors.
To be honest, for me it really is sepia and lavender grey.
Or, to put it differently, I am open to a debate about white vs. blue as the colour is somewhere in between and depending on lighting could be either - but there is no way in hell the other colour is black. It could be some darker brown shade (say, taupe) or it could be yellowish (ochre or copper, say), so gold is somewhere in the approximate range - but not black.
I say yes to the dress.
Here's a better graphic illustrating the blue shadow vs. yellow light decision the brain has to make when processing the image (it uses the same shades for the dress left and right according to Photoshop).
(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi3.kym-cdn.com%2Fphotos%2Fimages%2Fnewsfeed%2F000%2F921%2F226%2F3ac.png&hash=fcdcd0eeec2c9fa7a26ca0d20542f7138b2bb7cc)
It still doesn't make the other colour "black".
And in that picture it's blue-grey and brown-yellow in both cases. :P

No, if you check the color palette of the original picture in something like Photoshop then it's indeed not black.
However, the brain auto-adjusts color perception for environmental factors, like lights and shadows. Only that this image appears to be in a fuzzy range where the brain has problems deciding whether the dress is under intense yellow light or under a blue shade and can go either way.
It's kind of how the brain sometimes has trouble interpreting 3d data that's presented in 2d (e.g. the spinning dancer that seems to spin clockwise and/or counterclockwise).

Yeah. I find it really fascinating that so everyone is naturally seeing it in such totally different ways and that, despite all the explanations I've read and real pictures I've seen I can't, no matter how much I try, see that dress as blue and black.
It's like an optical illusion that makes sense but that you still can't see.
Same here, I just can't see the black. I sorta can see the case for blue, but that's never black in a million years to my eyes.

Wait why is your canteen filled with water? Going hiking?
Ok I lied... it's filled with bourbon.

My wife showed the picture to me, and I said "blue and black" without a second thought. I thought it was a total non-story until she said that she saw white and gold.
The real dress is blue and black, so I was right :yeah:
I have found that some optical illusions that work on others don't work on me. One theory I have read is that people like me tend to be a "small picture" guy who focuses on the details and ignore the "big picture". I see blue and say it is blue, ignoring all other hints in the photo which may influence others into thinking it is something else.

 There are definite times when Koreans mix them up when speaking in English
How was the hike?

Yeah, at least with things like the old/young lady you can train yourself to see both. I can only see the white and gold no matter how much a try to see the black and blue.
Can we take this dress, rap it up very carefully in brown paper, ask the three people who 'decide' internet memes to take it to Toronto, find the 'preppers' tunnel, get them to go down and place it, reverentially at the far end of the construction. And whilst they're doing that, get CdM to backfill the fucking tunnel using a JCB, which I'll have gladly paid for. :)
I guess Mongers is off his meds or something.

Maybe he sold them to afford a JCB?
How much does a JCB cost these days?

Don't know, perhaps 25 grand?
edit:
this'll do, a bit above UKP 25,000 , but at least it's in Canada:

I laughed.
I showed the picture, picture I see as White & Gold, to my 3½ years old and ask her what color is the dress. She answered Black & Blue.
It's one thing to know other people see it a different color than you do but your own kid that barely gets colors is a little unsettling.
The white and gold dress is still enjoying its 15 minutes?
