QuoteAccess Across America: Transit 2014
About the study
Transit
This study examined the accessibility to jobs by transit in 46 of the 50 largest (by population) metropolitan areas in the United States. It is the most detailed evaluation to date of access to jobs by transit, and it allows for a direct comparison of the transit accessibility performance of America's largest metropolitan areas.
Rankings were determined by a weighted average of accessibility, giving a higher weight to closer jobs. The calculations include all components of a transit journey, including "last mile" access and egress walking segments and transfers.
The study's report presents detailed accessibility values for each metropolitan area, as well as detailed block-level maps that illustrate the spatial patterns of accessibility within each area. A separate publication—Access Across America: Transit 2014 Methodology—describes the data and methodology.
In the future, the data presented in this study will be used to complete additional analyses, published periodically. Upcoming reports in the series will explore more detailed aspects of transit accessibility to jobs, including accessibility of jobs of different wage levels and a comparison with accessibility by car.
I gravitate to the best public transport.
So does urine.
My god. If San Fran is #2 then we're in really sad shape.
There are only three on that list that I'd want to live in, and two of them are in the bottom five. :(
EDIT: All three are.

It is actually pretty easy to get everywhere in SF and now many bus stops actually have electronic monitors that tell when next bus is coming.

I'd willingly live in the top 3. :)
Are there any international comparisons available ?
Would be interesting to know if these cities are generally above, below or a mixture of both, as compared to other large western cities?

Just don't see you as LA material, g. You're not that plastic.
Los Angeles is number 3?
But isn't that place famous for being an inhuman hell hole where you have absolutelyno choice but to drive everywhere?

I guess the lack of taxis helps with funneling people to public transportation.
Damn Austin is only #39? I feel sorry for those poor bastards lower than us.

I found it very easy to get around in that city without a car. What do you see as the problem?

Detroit was #34. The city of Detroit doesn't do any better a job running buses than it does balancing the budget, picking up garbage or lighting the streets. For political reasons the city buses and the metropolitan buses are separate systems which run on entirely unrelated schedules. I can't imagine there's a system that's actually worse than that.

The problem isn't that SF is really terrible, it's that it's #2. It's not that good, just ok. Though it is terrible if you do have a car.

Now as someone who lived in SF with a car, that is just crazy pants.
Where did you keep your car? Did you pay $30 a day to park it?
Edit: Don't say Palm Springs. :P

I kept my car at my apartment. I also used it frequently get groceries as my local grocery store* had a parking lot.
*CC don't hate me.

Meaning it's a sad reflection on US public transport that SF is 2, or you think another city is better?
I've experienced NYC, DC, and Boston and those relative rankings seem right. NYC is no doubt numero uno. DC and Boston are comparable.

Yes. That's what I meant.

I think I could do Santa Monica.
Also Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, the Lagunas, Palm Springs, etc.
Basically everything on the fringes of LA itself is ok. LA, not so much. :)

Would you consider San Diego on the fringe of LA?
Not really. I'd say Dana Point/San Clemente is pretty much the southern end, and San Diego is like another hour south.
I spent a week in LA using only public transportation since I don't drive, and if that's #3 then you're in serious trouble.

Only trouble if we don't have a car.
You can take the subway in NY and spot a wide array of people using it, middle and lower class, heck, I even saw quite a few suited types that probably think mass transit is more comfortable than driving into Manhattan every morning. Yet when I was in LA only non-wasps seemed to use it.

Sounds like the two cities have different cultural attitudes with regards to mass transit. :o

Heh, if the criterion was "Number of white people taking public transportation" Detroit would rank very, very low.
The criteria they used related to availability of public transportation to jobs. In the case of Detroit (and probably other cities) this skews the data because there is a little train that goes through the downtown area (where the jobs are); but downtown is only accessible by the unreliable bus service from the city or suburban neighborhoods.
This probably works against Chicago (and maybe Washington DC.) While the city and inner suburb public transportation is good; a lot of jobs are in outer suburbs where public transportation isn't so available.
Fun non related public transport fact:
Springfield Ohio's transport system initials is SCAT.
I still giggle everytime.
Too bad the Cincinnati subway was never completed. Wonder what (if any) impact it would have had on the city's growth & decline.

I think we have them and they live in the completed sections of the subway. At least I'm assuming that's why they don't let people go down there.

One of the few benefits I will have when my boys leave is that I will be able to take transit downtown and join the rest of my suited neighbours on an easy and fast crossing over the bridge.
