I woke up to have my hard drive not getting recognized by BIOS. My life was on that HDD :(
Actually, after some research it seems the data is still there intact, its just that this series has a fucked up firmware which kind of ruins the event log or something, sending a permanent busy message out so it cant get recognized.
There is a sort of surgical method of overriding this, but I am way too afraid to attempt it myself, have e-mailed a hungarian guy who managed to do it, willing to pay for him to do it for me.
Now hold me.
The problem has been known for a while. It was a pretty big clusterfuck because the initial update bricked some models.
Don't sweat it, your porn is safe.
:nelson
What's the problem? Just use your backup.

Very funny. :P There are hdds in my household which have been constantly used for 5 or 6 years with no problem, I thought that any HDD fault would be gradual. Who would have thought such a stupid bug can exist.
We must meet this threat with our courage, our valor, indeed with our very lives to ensure that human civilization, not insect, dominates this galaxy now and always!
Obviously, your porn doesn't want you looking at it.

Ouch, just a reminder for the rest of us to back up frequently. I hope you get your data back!
External HDD death is a recurring nightmare for me.
Travelling home last night I padded up my HD with several shirts and practically gave it my hand luggage to itself so as to protect it.
I was thinking of buying a new HDD for Princesca's PC... what model/models are affected so I know not to get one of those?
Seagate Barracude 7200.11 - actually its a fairly common error I could have avoided applying a firmware upgrade but i dont read hardware news so i had no idea
Did gypsies take it?
I hear ya. My six month old drive died. Fortunately I didn't have anything important on it so I just ghosted the data onto the replacement and all is good.
Man, externals now are fragile. I've been running the same internal on this CPU since 2003.

Buy a Western Digital.
I'm thinking of buying a new one, one of those 1TB.
I have a few WD 1tb USB drives as an extra-extra backup for my file servers. Make a note to ask me in about six more months if they are still working.
A couple of PCs ago I had a Seagate Barracuda and I remember upgrading the firmware for some reason, but I can't recall why now.
*checks* O SNAP, actually this current PC has a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10

That would be so much better with a fade-to-black effect at the end...
Apparently the 7200.10 doesn't have this issue, but it has a weird performance cap thing I wasn't aware of with the firmware (AAK) that I have. I haven't noticed my drive to be excessively slow, but alot of people have RMA'd it for that reason. Since they fucked up the 7200.10, the 7200.11, and (I've read) some later versions, I guess I'm going back to Western Digital for my next HDD.
I had the problem with my 7200.11, I never got it to work. I lost it somewhere, never wanna hear of it again.

Post your drive model number: ST----
I had a problem like this and there is a guide for fixing it. Involves a $20 cable.
Dont know, lost in the mail 2-3 years ago.
I meant Tamas.
I have the cable. If our drives are the same I can guide him step by step.
Thanks starbright, I am meeting a guy today in Budapest, on my way to the eastern edges of the country. He supposedly fixed his own barracuda and two other guys' from a hardware forum. He will attempt to fix mine, for about $30.
Wish me luck.
The fucking gypsy goatherder never showed up. WTF was his problem.
Starbright, is this the solution you applied?

he was stealing your stuff while you was gone to meet him.
Probably. :(
bumping for starbright
That sounds like a kind of dance.
Yes. Please post you drive model number to make sure the problem is the same.
I used this cable: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807&pid=834086&st=680&
Plug and play. I can guide you through on MSN if you want.
Oh thanks thats a much clearer explanation!
I am at work, but I hope I can get together with a slightly more knowledgeable friend tomorrow. He has the required screwdriver, while I dont.
so basically I just like remove the electronics part, then connect the HDD to the SATA power supply like it was working, take the USB cable of my mobile, ID the 3 required cables, connect them to the 3 pins on the HDD and I am ready to go with Hyperterminal?
MY HDD IS WORKING! I HAVE ISSUED ORDERS TO IT IN HYPER TERMINAL!
Thanks goes out to starbright that description and pics deeper into the thread helped build confidence to actually attempt it.
A friend of dad's helped since he had some experience in tearing hdds apart.
Now its time to copy valuable data (direct-download game install files, documents, p0rn) to the external HD, then a firmware upgrade, and I am set.

Nice to hear. I hate Seagate and Western Digital. Spent $400 on HDs in the last three years and all of them failed me. One from Seagate had this bug. Pain in the ass.
Warning! If you have a Green Power drive from Western Digital, they have a bug that might shorten their lifespan. They park the head more often than necessary and will reach their lifespan limit in a couple of months.
