But the first hint their parents received as to where the girls might have gone was a spate of social media posts claiming they had gone to fight a 'holy war'.
But the parents say that they don't believe the messages are being written by the girls. Authorities suspect they have been tricked into leaving the country.
Samra and Sabina come from Bosnian refugee families who settled in Austria after the ethnic wars of the 1990s, and were born in the country.
The fighting in Syria continues to be fierce - just today a bomb was detonated in the northern city of Aleppo, destroying buildings and injuring children.
New photos on their Facebook pages show them brandishing Kalashnikov rifles - and in some cases surrounded by armed men.
However, it has since emerged that some of these pictures have been circulated online for years - casting doubt on whether they actually show the girls.
In the latest posting they announced plans to marry so that they could become 'holy warriors' and in the messages they say: 'Death is our goal'.
Their families doubt that the messages were really written by them.
Austrian officials believe that the pair, judging by the scenes around them, are in a training camp and are not only already married, but also already living in the homes of their new husbands.
In Vienna the family admitted that the two had recently started going to a local mosque run by a radical Imam, Ebu Tejma.
The girls' fathers are reportedly already abroad looking for their daughters, who have not contacted their parents.
It is thought that they have been sending online messages to their friends speaking of their new lives and boasting that 'nobody will ever find us'.
Austrian media said the two teenagers had become the public face for the call to jihad in Syria, and alleged that they had been tricked into going to the country in order to publicise the call to arms.
The latest case of young people getting caught up in the Syrian conflict comes after an 18-year-old British man died in Syria - only for his father to reveal he had no idea his son had gone there.
Abdullah Deghayes, 18, from Brighton, East Sussex, was caught up in fighting in Syria. But his father Abubaker said today: 'At the moment we do not have details of his death. All that we know is that he was killed in Syria. The family is mourning.'
Abdullah was the nephew of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Deghayes.

Austrian media say that they grew up like "normal Western girls" - dressing as teens do, having boyfriends, going to parties. In the weeks/months before their leaving they supposedly started hanging out with teenagers of Chechen roots and became hyper-religious. Roughly 26,000 Chechens live in Austria, the large majority in Vienna, in my district (there's plenty Chechen graffiti on the walls, besides the usual Serb/Bosnian/Turkish ones).
Why would Austria want to get people like this back? Seems like a win-win.
You have to sympathize with their parents. They managed to escape the Yugoslav Wars and start families in Vienna only to have some asshole at a mosque turn their daughters into jihadis as soon as they started to explore their heritage.

That's not entirely accurate, I guess. We had a guy working on our house who was Bosniak. He seemed pretty nice, and very hardworking. It is weird for me to have an actual ethnic prejudice, though, and not one that I just play up for forum schtick purposes. :hmm:
I had a Bosnian cab driver in Montreal one time who was very nice.
The most attractive woman I've ever met was Bosnian -- the daughter of a mixed Serb/Bosniak couple who eventually made it to San Diego. If they hadn't boarded the last bus north from Banja Luka, Karadzic's people would probably have murdered all of them.
First girl looks a little like the Yugoslav exchange student that went to my High School in 88 or 89. She wore the most awful east bloc shoes.
That headgear can really take a decent-looking girl and make her ugly.

Maybe. But I'd guess there's a lot more Saudis and Syrians going apeshit in Syria than Bosnians or Indonesians.
Boko Haram, Chechens, the Sudanese in South Sudan and in Darfur, etc. It's a real phenomenon, and goes back to the Anatolian Turks and Andalusian Berbers at least. A part of it is just that the border between Dar al-Harb and Dar al-Islam attracts a lot of fanatics looking to die in battle or get rich killing infidels, and always has. Constant contact with the infidel or reaction against perceived cosmopolitan corruption can also breed fanaticism.

The fact that one went crazy and killed my cousin and the other was a psycho-Atheist pseudointellectual girlfriend of a guy who almost punched me because I insisted that Islam was founded in the 7th century rather than the 9th does not mean that I think they should all be murdered.

Bosnian Muslims here are usually considered to be rather relaxed about their religion. Some will observe the rules for halal food, or ramadan, but many, if not most just won't give a shit. I have a friend who said he never got as drunk as at a (Muslim) family function he attended in Bosnia.
It's usually not the Bosnians where you see a middle aged guy walking down the street with two or three women a few steps behind him and him talking to them over his shoulder.

The bits I've been to are insanely relaxed about religion and there's a lot of drinking involved. The one exception, as ever, is pork.
I'm a bit confused. I'm not a racist. I said that I might be prejudiced against Bosnians but
1) Bosnians aren't a race.
2) I said there were Bosnians I knew and liked.
3) I said I think the American intervention as called for. They are people.
4) My "wishing that they hadn't come to America" was clearly about me wanting my 15 year old cousin to not be murdered.
