QuoteActress Ellen Page, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Juno," came out as a lesbian on Friday at a Las Vegas conference for gay teens.
"I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission," the 26-year-old actress said in a speech that drew roaring support from an audience at the Time to Thrive conference sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign.
"I'm here today because I am gay. And because ... maybe I can make a difference," she said. "To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."
Page, who in 2007 played a pregnant teen in "Juno," has also starred in "Inception", "To Rome with Love" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."
Page is also working on "Freeheld," a drama about a terminally ill police detective fighting to assign her retirement benefits to a lesbian lover.
Page said in her speech that she suffered for years because she was scared to be public about her sexuality.
"My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered," she said. "And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."
The Human Rights Campaign, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group that posted her speech on its website, congratulated Page for completing the "deeply personal and arduous journey" of coming out.
Page in her speech also praised others who have taken similar steps, such as athlete Michael Sam, who announced he was gay this month and could become the National Football League's first openly homosexual player.
There is a shocker.
That makes her hooking up with Michael Cera more believable.
Birds---------->Tweet.
Will she now significantly change her appearance?
Not if she wants to keep getting decent roles.
I was under the impression that her best days were behind her anyways.
Still, she was probably hetero until Cera turned her.
I fully and completely support her right to do hot lesbian stuff with other hot lesbians.
Bummer
There goes the dream.
Wow, that makes her acting in the scene with Michael Cera on the chair even more impressive.

I just vomited.
I want to tap it even more now.
I find it strange they do not say 'current' player there since a few former players have come out.
Anyway good for her.

Fortunately your chances did not significantly decrease.

He can't be the first current player as he isn't a player yet. Nothing current about it. I think they are saying "player" as in one who will actually be playing and not a former or ex-player.

Right. I just think it is weird they are not being clear about that. They just have to add one word. Also we will see Sam has not made a team just yet, hence why it was courageous of him.

That article says "could become" that seems pretty clear that he isn't a player yet.
Yeah, I think, Valmy, that the sentence is pretty clear.

Fair enough. I just know that after I first heard he was going to be the first openly gay player, I went and checked and saw that a lot of guys had come out after they played and I thought that was misleading. But maybe that was just me.

Yes I never said that part was unclear.
I wonder when she'll go through puberty.
:D
Her eggo is lesbo. Or something
I am just reminded that among Swedes in America, there is no poverty either.
Who cares.
I thought she was already out for some reason. Huh. Well. Lovely for her.
The one I'm really waiting to see is Tom Cruise.
Is it actually brave to come out 1)as a woman and 2)in 2014? Will this affect her career in any fashion?
One day pretty soon, if not today, we're going to be surprised people still "come out."
Anyway, allow me to say, apropos of nothing, Ellen Page is dreamy.

75% (conservatively) of Hollywood casting is based on appealing to the male's audience sexual desires. Being lesbian sort of cuts on that fantasy.
I remember Anne Heche's carrer crashing after she came out. She was also a nutcase so that may also have played a part, but certainly coming out hurt her career a lot.

That was almost 20 years ago, and she's re-ratted since then.
I don't get that. Seducing an attractive lesbian (or two) seems like the ultimate male fantasy.

I take it you were one of the dozen or so people who saw her in "Whip It?" I lulzed so hard that they specifically avoided mentioning that role. Stereotypes ahoy!

Yeah, it was 20 years ago, but we haven't had that many actors/actresses coming out since then. Note that I believe that this is caused more by Hollywood exec's (an immensely risk-adverse bunch) and the very affected actors' fears than necessarily a real negative public response towards a gay actor in lead roles.

*Not that you could before, but we're talking fantasies here.
And the hot chick in The Banner Saga is gay too.
The..The Banner Saga? What?
Your avatar is a tuna licker.
I doubt her career will be affected. Anne Heche's problem (other than going psycho) was she was playing mostly love interests. Ellen Paige always plays the spunky tomboy outcast.
Anne Heche had other problems, such as turning 30 and the fact that most of her well known roles were in mediocre films.
And don't forget the other issues she had been dealing with at the time, like not being able to fucking act her way out of a paper bag.
