Just re-watched Silence of the Lambs for the 40th time. The soundtrack never ceases to amaze me. Goodbye, Horses is obviously amazing.
Night of the Hunter probably has my favorite original soundtrack. Boogie Nights probably has my favorite non-original soundtrack. Vertigo is also up there. Alien. I like the Shostakovich music they used for 10 Days that Changed the World, but I don't think it was written for the movie. Nevsky.
Your favorites?
I would say that Star Wars probably has the best (orchestral) movie soundtrack of all time. I agree that Boogie Nights has a great soundtrack. I also love the scoring in most of Scorsese's films (especially Goodfellas and Casino).
Of films I've watched recently Drive and Battle of Algiers stick out.
Star Wars was a great sound soundtrack. But I think Dr. Zhivago was better.
Of the recent ones I've heard, Tommy. :bowler:
Not a film, but Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks intro theme is a long-time favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXrjMaVoTy0 I had it on a mix CD maybe 10 years ago, and it made the most mundane driving around suburban neighborhoods feel fraught with significance.
Otherwise, "Theme de Camille" written by Georges Delerue for Godard's Contempt (which also ended up in Casino, apparently, although I don't recall the context). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUs4awmb3-o
And "Tana's Theme" written by Henry Mancini for Orson Welles' Touch of Evil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnBAmytGtQ4
Both happen to be favorite movies of mine which I guess is no coincidence.
The Fountain. Didn't care for the movie, love the music. Also Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
Also the soundtrack from The Mission is both haunting and beautiful.

Good choice.

Yes. Disappointing film though.
The soundtrack of Into the Wild is rather good, too.
Trainspotting. Every song is perfect for the scene.
Off the cuff, The Hobbit and LotR, Forrest Gump.

Was it from the scene where they meet up in the desert?
A Clockwork Orange and Bladerunner.
The New World and Thin Red Line.
Pulp Fiction. Because it kicks ass.

Great call. IIRC the trailer that gave me a massive boner for Pulp Fiction was nothing but a black screen with surf guitar in the background then the title.

You mean like in the opening credits?

Yup.
That's Misirlou (Turkish for Egyptian). It's a traditional Greek song about an eastern Greek wanting to dick a Muslim Egyptian girl. Dick Dale was IIRC Assyrian American, and someone bet he couldn't play a song with two chords, so he played a song he learned as a kid.
The Third Man. Magnificent zither
AFter Star Wars and Indiana Jones, I'd say Krull.
The Godfather, Superfly, The Harder They Come
Braveheart
Godfather
Star Wars
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly :alberta:
A Fistful of Dollars :alberta:
Star Wars was a monster soundtrack.
Last of the Mohicans.

Last of the Mohicans.
God, yes
Edit: Also I don't remember the music in the rest of the film but the Tubular Bells-Exorcist opening is perfect.
Edit: Also all Goblin-Argento collaborations. Especially Tenebre.

Oh yeah. :swiss:
In the past five years, the best that come to mind are Tron: Legacy (Daft Punk, Joseph Trapanese), Moon (Clint Mansell, who was mentioned upthread via The Fountain), and this year's best, Maniac (Rob).
Going further back, John Carpenter and Alan Howarth's collaborations can be counted amongst my favorite scores--Christine and Prince of Darkness being the real standouts.
There's The Little Mermaid, of course, by the guys that wrote those songs (I forget).
And let us not forget Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (James Horner), in particular "Stealing the Enterprise."
Among my favourite list, out of my head right now :
Aguirre - The Wrath of God, especially Lacrime Di Rei, by Popoh Vul.
Bram Stocker's Dracula, by Wojciech Kilar
Scarface, by Giorgio Moroder.
Das Boot, by Klaus Doldinger
Finally I also have a soft spot for what I dubbed "Love Theme from Salò", conducted by Ennio Morricone. :P
Ditto on Last of the Mohicans and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. :)
Hitchcock's movies all tend to have good soundtracks. The first time I watched North by Northwest, I was pretty struck by the sound track, and the timing of it.
I recall really liking the juxtaposition in A Knight's Tale, which is probably why I also liked it in Marie Antoinette.

Das Boot, by Klaus Doldinger
Seriously?
I remember thinking while watching Das Boot that it was a great movie, marred only by the incredibly cheesy and cheap sounding synthesizer sound track.
Lawrence of Arabia
Grease
Boogie nights
24 hour party people.
The Blues Brothers :smoke:
L.
Oh wow. Tough question. I have probably... 70 or so scores on my computer and cds. I do have an incredible fondness for The Complete Recordings that were released for the Lord of the Rings movies. Field of Dreams, Glory, Gladiator, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Lawrence of Arabia, Pan's Labyrinth, Planet of the Apes, The Illusionist, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Natural... the list is nearly endless. Some scores are amazing in their entirety, some are made on just one or two pieces, there is so much greatness in them.
Scott Pilgrim.
Sure, sounds a bit lame to say something so recent but it really was pretty good and nicely integrated into the film.
Plus I can't think of anything else at the moment.
Well I know someone who's going to be on the short list of liquidation.
Let's not forget Labyrinth.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan had a good one too.

Synthesizers were only used during a couple scenes. Das Boot also has the Tipperary song (Red Army version, no less!), the night club music, and a couple other good French songs.
I'll throw in two by Michael Kamen, Brazil and Band of Brothers (not a movie but I don't care).
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Conan the Barbarian, The Thing...
Blues Brothers - good call.
Got me thinking about The Commitments
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7CHPM0AUfw
and Eddy and the Cruisers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkMKpZlh1Ng
Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 is my favourite, from his movies.
I also like very much the Robocop theme.
A lot of good soundtracks already mentioned. I throw Sergio Leone's soundtracks for the Dollar Trilogy and Once Upon A Time In The West.
Special mention for the unsettlingly chipper music in Cannibal Holocaust during the hut burning scene.
Purple Rain
