Between furloughs, car chases, and a self-immolation, the residents of Washington, DC, aren't having a great October. But by Friday of this week, things could get even worse — and not because of the looming debt crisis.
On October 11th, a group of right-wing truckers is planning to drive to DC to shut down the major commuter highway that circles the city. They'll continue to block traffic, they say, until they see the arrest of elected officials who have "violated their oath of office."
Organizers of the event, which is titled "Truckers Ride for the Constitution," say they are fed up with a variety of headaches caused by the government: Fuel efficiency standards enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency, Obamacare, state and local laws over idling their trucks, and "insurance companies purportedly requiring technological updates," according to US News and World Report.
They say that to demonstrate against violations of the constitution, they plan to circle interstate 495 — known widely as the beltway — and not allow through any traffic. If police try to stop them, they'll park their trucks right on the highway.
Originally, reports from US News and World Report indicated the truckers were looking to impeach President Obama. But Earl Conlon, an organizer of the event, told US News, "We're not asking for impeachment, we're asking for the arrest of everyone in government who has violated their oath of office." These include House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), both for purportedly arming al Qaeda linked Syrian rebels. But while it might seem very US-specific, even some Canadian truckers might join in.
It was not immediately clear how truckers would go from circling the highway around DC to actually arresting elected representatives.
But, if the protest grows large enough, it could spell even more trouble for DC: The trucker event is slated to go on for three days, and will coincide with the weekend of the previously-planned Million Vet March, where veterans can express their outrage over the government shutdown.
I wonder if the election of the first black President was too soon. I am having trouble not linking the ever-increasing shrill-parade of the far right to the fact that they have started it when they spotted the sheriff is a n....
I think the truckers will succeed in getting a lot of people* arrested.
Anyone looking for a cheap rig might want to wait until these confiscated rigs go up for auction.
Other than that, I'd say to these guys, "bring it on, assholes."
* probably eleven or twelve of the fourteen truckers participating
It's just more and more insanity from the far-right conservatives, and I can't help but wonder when it will end.
This must be how Americans felt during the Vietnam Era regarding the far-left liberals.
Sounds like a great opportunity to get some douchebags off the road.

I think that for some, yes, it's too soon. But then, for those people, it will always be too soon.
For most, however, he's just a Democrat in the White House doing things that they disagree with. It wouldn't matter what color his skin is; they find the ideas distasteful.

You should be mature enough by now to realize that there is little actual resemblance between the tens of millions of people who make up the core of the Republican party and the singular and narrow view of them that you get out of the media, and that includes the pro-right media, like Fox and such.

They get good press. The liberals like them because they get their viewers good and riled up. The Fox News and Limbaughs like them because they create a lot of filler and make things more dramatic.
To my mind it is primarily about the economy, and the current president determines where the idiots come from. If the economic situation was better than there wouldn't be nearly as much support for the loonies. If a Republican had the White House since 2008 it would be the Occupy nutsters that would be splitting apart the Democrats. Unfortunately it also means that the Tea Party isn't that interested in a stable or improving economy, since they lose a lot of support. It's just a question of how far the TPers can push it before the popular blame goes almost entirely on them.

Truckers Ride for the Constitution' to take to Beltway in protest
Truck drivers are expected to descend on the Beltway on Friday for a political rally protesting causes ranging from the government shutdown to low wages for drivers — but claims the group planned to intentionally clog the roadways and shut down the region appear to have been overstated.
Kicking off with a rally and drive around the Beltway on Friday morning, the group is encouraging a wider general strike that would last through the weekend. Organizers encouraged truckers not to haul freight and asked supporters not to purchase any products or services that aren't completely essential.
But a Georgia trucker who made sensational comments to U.S. News and World Report about circling the Beltway "three lanes deep" and planning to seek the arrest of members of Congress for disregarding the Constitution admitted Tuesday he is not an organizer of the group and that he sensationalized his claims to ensure the protest got coverage from reporters.
"We ain't going to do that. Everybody knows it would be real stupid," Earl Conlon, 50, said Tuesday. "It was just my way of getting your attention.
"It's politics," he said. "I did what the senators do. I said one thing and did another."
Mr. Conlon, who is hopeful but not certain he will attend the protests, said he would like the demonstration to be peaceful and respectful.
The group's legitimate organizers are communicating via Facebook about their plans and goals.
"The only way to get our legislators to operate lawfully and constitutionally is to penalize them with a credible threat of a shutdown," organizers wrote in a statement about the event.
Originally billed "Truckers to Shut Down America," the protest is now called "Truckers Ride For The Constitution" after the organizing group's original social media sites were shut down.
Truckers plan to rally at the Doswell Truck Stop, close to Kings Dominion in Doswell, Va., at 7 a.m. Friday and then drive up Interstate 95 to the Beltway. The group's website encouraged drivers to outfit their vehicles with signs referencing the Constitution or with American flags.
A route map on the group's Facebook page shows that trucks will be directed to the Inner Loop of the Beltway and other participants in cars or motorcycles directed to the Outer Loop. From there, it was unclear what the exact route would be, how long drivers would circle the 64-mile Beltway, or whether they would then venture into the District.
Organizers did not return calls seeking comment Tuesday.
While plans go forward for the protest, some within the trucking industry have expressed skepticism of its reach and scope.
"While I applaud the goal of making an impact on Washington, the dates chosen for the actions could not be more idiotically planned," said Michael Parkhurst, chairman of the Independent Truckers Association and an organizer of previous trucking industry strikes in the 1970s.
The protests will likely fizzle out because they were organized over a weekend and don't have widespread support, Mr. Parkhurst said.
Meanwhile local authorities said they are aware of the planned events and will be looking out for them.
"We are aware of it," Maryland State Police spokesman Sgt. Marc Black said. "As long as they are not breaking the law, we are going to allow it."
In Virginia, police also said they were preparing to deal with the expected influx of traffic.
"Virginia State Police is aware of the proposed convoy of commercial vehicles and are preparing accordingly with the region's law enforcement agencies, just as we have done in the past for similar demonstrations held within the National Capital Region," spokeswoman Corinne N. Geller said in an email.
"As long as the vehicles comply with Virginia law, then the Virginia State Police will not interfere with their protest."
