I saw an article on the top 20 most visited museums in 2012 on CNN and was curious how many places members of this forum have been to.
The link to the report (put out by AECOM and Themed Entertainment Association: http://www.aecom.com/deployedfiles/Internet/Capabilities/Economics/_documents/2012%20Theme%20Index%20Combined_1-1_online.pdf (http://www.aecom.com/deployedfiles/Internet/Capabilities/Economics/_documents/2012%20Theme%20Index%20Combined_1-1_online.pdf)
(The actual report has all sorts of attractions, not just museums. Eight of the top 25 theme park attractions in the world are located here in Florida; and Europeans think we have no culture.)
The list:
1 LOUVRE Paris, France
2 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY Washington, DC, U.S.A.
3 NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM Washington, DC, U.S.A.
4 THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART New York, NY, U.S.A.

I've been to 13, (Louvre, Smithsonian Natural History, Air and Space, and Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, British Museum, Tate Modern, British National Gallery, American Museum of Natural History, Vatican Museums, National Museum of China, Orsay, and V&A)
What about the 20 most visited creationism museums?
Just two - the Met and the Vatican Museum. Not having visited London or Paris yet cuts out a lot of options.
There were some really outstanding museums in Vienna, I'm surprised one of them didn't make the list.
I've been to all of the US ones plus the Musee D'Orsay. Missed the other Paris museums and haven't spent any time London, Rome or East Asia.
I definitely need to hit more of the DC museums while I am stationed out here. This fall/winter (when it's not swamp-ass balls hot walking around) shall be: The Summer of Culture.

If you're at the Smithsonian the best café is the one in the Museum of Native American History. Even in the heat of the summer it's worth it to leave the museum you're at to go there for lunch.

I, of course, meant Winter of Culture.
This Floridian heat has addled my brain.

Believe it or not, I've been to the National Museum of Scotland but not the Pergamon-and I've been to Berlin (but only with maybe 1 day free time).
I don't remember what was there, except I think I was one of the few people in there. I can only imagine that Edinburgh doesn't have many cultural attractions so it gets the bulk of visitors looking for something to do when the weather is poor. I think I must have gone before the rotating sheep exhibit. That would have been cool.
In E'burgh I think I'd go to the National Gallery of Scotland ahead, plenty of big names in their collection, although no real masterpieces. The National Museum of Scotland seems to have plenty of nifty archaeological stuff, though.

I'm something of a history nerd. I'll take a second rate history museum over a second rate art museum any day. I'm generally only going to an art museum if it is really top tier.

For a few short glorious weeks in 1978 I lived in one of the flats opposite the British Museum. I was workless  and used to pop across on a daily basis for 40 minutes or so and really look at a particular set of artefacts.
Then I got a job, could no longer afford to live in central London and moved to bloody Croydon

I'm not too surprised about the National Palace Museum - it does, after all house most of the treasury of the Qing dynasty. Plenty of people are interested in those. As well, it's probably one of the premier destinations for major traveling exhibits (they've got a Renoir show up right now f. ex.) in the Chinese world, so those two add up.
Not sure about the National Museum of Korea. I'm guessing the Japanese museums suffer from there being too many of them - so traffic is more dispersed - and from Tokyo offering too many other things to visitors, thus pushing museums down on the list for visitors. Perhaps the Korean museum is the one major one in Seoul that most visitors to Korea go to get the obligatory exposure to Korean culture and history?

For cultural history, yeah. It's definitely the big one in Korea, and it gets the traveling exhibits from around the world.
Of course the main museum for Languisites, and seeming nearly as popular from my anecdotal experience, is the "War Memorial of Korea" which is a military history museum, ranging from the bronze age to the modern day.

A mere nine, I hate being less cultured that our colonial cousins :weep:
The only US museums I've been to were in Chicago, none of which made the list, and I was in Beijing for such a short visit I was too busy doing the big outdoors stuff.
I'm not quite sure why I've never made it to NY, seeing as I've wanted to visit for as long as I remember. Probably some combination of no-one to go with and unaffordable accommodation.
Been countless times to the Louvre, a couple times to Orsay, Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, to Pompidou/Beaubourg.
As to London, I went to the Imperial War Museum in London plus the others but I wouldn't mind going visiting them again.
Visited a long time ago the Vatican, so I could return there as well.

I'm having serious doubts about this list.
The first non-appearance that came to mind, Aya Sophia (which is a museum), apparently attracted 3,5 million visitors in 2011. That should place it at #17 on the global list.

Well naturally Holland would be underwater so I can see how people wouldn't shed too many tears for their homes not being flooded.
But if you have kids the natural history museum is a much easier sell than trying to get them to appreciate Renaissance painting of Madonna and Child #15,000 so I am rather surprised they are not more popular.
