Quote from: Josquius on June 21, 2022, 04:55:43 PMI've no idea what triggered it but in recent days there seems to be an rush of bans on transgender athletes in sport.

It is the in for the transphobes.

The thing is that yes this is an issue. But it is such a small issue that only impacts sports at the very highest levels of competition. something that will only likely impact a small percentage of athletes, much less people. So sure for like 0.01% of cis and transwomen this problem is a big deal and does need a solution. But ultimately if sports are made unfair for elite cis woman athletes and that is the price we have to pay for full trans acceptance, that is not exactly the end of the world. But I am sure there is a better solution than that and we will find one.

It is really unfortunate, and frankly bullshit, that this is what is being used to go after trans people.

I've said this before in other arguments:

The fact that something happens in really small numbers isn't actually an argument we shouldn't do anything about it.  It in fact means that if we do something about it it will be really easy since it affects so few people.

Are some people making arguments about transwomen participating in elite sports against ciswomen made in bad faith?  Sure.  But do they also have a point?  Also true.

I got a phone call from the Leslyn Lewis campaign the other day.  An honest to God person actually on the other line.

I politely said that while I am glad Ms. Lewis is in caucus, I would be ranking her last due to electability.

Let me get this straight. Not only is America not doing the sensible thing out of the latest school shooting but they're actually doing the opposite?

They can't seriously believe this will help. Must be the politics of spite.

Quote from: FunkMonk on June 21, 2022, 03:31:39 PMTime for some silly season stuff:

Chelsea agreed a loan with Inter to take Lukaku back for a one year loan for a minor fee. In essence, Inter loaned Lukaku to Chelsea for the 2021/2022 season and received like 90m from Chelsea in return

Amazing. Chelsea is usually quite smart with transfers. They're the most well known of the buy up all the kids, loan them out a bit, then sell for big money, crew.

Sure but signing terrible past their prime strikers is what Chelsea do. Have been trying to replace Drogba ever since he left.

Quote from: The Minsky Moment on Today at 11:08:54 AMThis is what result oriented jurisprudence looks like - same court, same majority, same 24-hour period:
[...]
Threats to "pontential life" - requires interest balancing.  Threats to actual life - nothing to see here, move along.

A woman's right to autonomy and control over her body - must yield to legislative judgments about other interests.
A man's right to conceal carry on a crowded NYC street - absolute and cannot be overcome by even the most compelling state interest in public safety.
Is it right that I read the New York gun control law that's been overturned is 108 years old? It also seems like "historical understanding" is relevant to some issues but not others.

It's really grim :(

Quote from: Zoupa on June 17, 2022, 12:45:22 AMMontreal declined to host mainly because of FIFA's insane rules about other events.

I'm reading it was because of money. Vancouver also withdrew initially because of financial concerns and had to be brought back for the final bid because otherwise Canada would only have 1 venue.

I was a bit surprised when I read we were hosting because I didn't know we had come back into the bid.  I hope we are not paying FIFA much.  I was pretty happy when we withdrew in the first instance.

edit: a quick google search shows its a lot of money for a couple of games.

Estimate is between $240 million and $260 million.

Incoming boom in construction of clinics along the Canada/US border to provide medical services to American women fleeing the US for proper medical care.  A modern underground railroad may also need to be developed to get them across unfriendly states.
