Hey Seedy, do you know this fellow?

Oh yeah, he's arguably this town's biggest celebrity after John Waters that doesn't play sports.  Really nice guy on a personal basis, the kind you'd find waiting in line behind you at the pretzel vendor on the street corner, he's one of those accomplished doctors that is comfortable with himself and doesn't have to do the imperious "Don't you know who I am?" thing, mainly because everybody does.   You'd walk into the School of Medicine bookstore, and there's a section--like all schools--of published works by the faculty.  Well, there's that section, and then there's his section.

Although he really rubbed the Hopkins community the wrong way since he came out calling Obamacare the worse thing since slavery, and has shown himself to be one of those "I-benefited-from-civil-rights-now-I-want-to-pull-the-ladder-up-behind-me" Clarence Thomas types the Languish Creepy Ass Crackers love so much.  Pissed off the medical students so much over how much he hates homosexuals they withdrew his invitation to speak at their commencement last year.

When you drive through the monied part of Baltimore County where all the rich people abuse animals, you'll see handmade signs that say "Run Ben Run" near where he lives.

Certainly smarter than Sarah Palin, who would probably separate conjoined Siamese twins with a cake knife.  Keeps saying stuff that's just as dumb, though.

And it's Johns Hopkins.
The Johns Hopkins.  ;)

I'll be headed up there next year to finish up my residency training.

Saw that the other day.  They don't stand with Rand :(

OTOH, you gotta give Paul Ryan credit for his voting record being consistent with his public statements, at least according to their methodology.

Try not to become too much of an asshole then, mkay?  That place churns out enough of them as it is.

QuoteCarson apologizes over copied passages in book

Dr. Ben Carson, the retired Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon who is considering a run for president in 2016, apologized Thursday for lifting portions of his 2012 book, "America the Beautiful," without offering credit.

The apology came a day after the news site BuzzFeed pointed to instances in which Carson copied wholesale sections the book from an anti-socialism website and several conservative historians.

"I attempted to appropriately cite and acknowledge all sources in 'America the Beautiful,' but inadvertently missed some. I apologize, and I am working with my editors to rectify the situation," Carson said in statement distributed by his literary agent Sealy Yates.

At least one of the authors Carson relied on, Bill Federer, said in a statement he did not believe his work was plagiarized. "With 16 acknowledgments and citations, it is clear that Dr. Ben Carson made significant effort to make correct attribution," he said.

Carson retired from Hopkins in 2013 after a celebrated career in pediatric neurosurgery. Talk of a potential presidential campaign began to swirl after he delivered a fiery address at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington in February.

The Florida resident has said he will make a decision about whether to seek the GOP nomination by this spring.

He was always shitting on our school and going "THIS is how we would do it at Johns Hopkins" when he taught over here; made us believe Johns Hopkins was some kind of enlightened learning paradise.

I'm really glad to see that Huckabee and Christie are entertaining runs...

I was 18 years old, so pretty much nothing.

He taught Contemporary History at my Barcelona Uni, he's the first History teacher I had that didn't reduce his class to blind memorization and parroting of lessons, so he left a lasting impression on me.

Yeah, there's a lot of that over there, not just in the learning environment but the working environment as well.

Question is; is it true?

Question is; is it true?

While they possess the resources to attract top-flight talent, and they have it in abundance particularly on the scientific and medical side, I also believe there's a distinct amount of masturbatory self-worship involved. The unfortunate thing is it perpetuates itself.  I wanted to transfer out of my department into communications, figuring I could parlay my law enforcement media relations experience in a grant-funded slot for an interagency emergency management liaison, and the response was rather lukewarm.  Then I understood:  I checked out the department directory, and everybody from Director down to semester intern was either a Hopkins undergrad or grad.  They eventually put an MFA grad student in that slot, so there ya go.  Blood is thicker than water, especially if it's Columbia Blue.  if only I did better on my Math SAT.   :(
