There is much to be learnt from beasts.

Jaron - That's what makes them better than Tigers. Tigers may be a little larger, but Lions are smarter.

I would think an animal that has to hunt alone would be the smarter one. Lions don't need to be smart, just numerous.
Winner of THE grumbler point.

Social animals are smarter than solitary ones, this is not controversial.
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

It is controversial because "smartness" is very subjective.

They may seem smarter to other social animals.

Jaron

I just read tigers have bigger brains than lions. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Ortiz.

Lion.  Many thousands of years as one of the most universal political and cultural symbols for power.

That's a blanket statement.  Octopi are smarter than ants; they're probably smarter than lions as well.  They are very asocial.

But social animals of one type are smarter than similar types that are solitary. Social insects are typically smarter than solitary ones, Lions are smarter than tigers, monkeys that live in large social groups are smarter than those that live alone.

That is a rather proactive claim on behalf of the Octopi, offer some proof.

They can learn how to swim.  Ants can't.  So there.

katmai

An octopus is smarter than Ortiz.
Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son

Go read a book from the last twenty years.  Octopi can figure out mazes, traps, trick containers, etc.

Octopi are better than lions at predicting soccer games.

Don't really see how being extinct is relevant to it being the best. They, like many animals, went extinct because of circumstances completely out of their control.
