Yeah in these cases it is almost always a dynastic deal.

Jenna Bush has just a few years to become eligible.
Vote Barbara Bush.

This is what I was thinking. Other than Margaret Thatcher, are there any women who came to power without a family history of male rulers?

President Michelle Bachelet of Chile: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Bachelet (restricted to one term ending 2010, though can run again in 2013)

This is why I said 'almost always' with 190+ countries I knew there had to be at least a couple more out there :P

Oh, cool. I'd never heard of either of these women, but their stories are remarkable. Thank you. :)
Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away...

Golda Meir.

I'm not sure why, but I always thought that she had a politician father. Reading up, obviously not.

There have been bucketloads of female heads of state or government, it's no longer a matter of two or three honourable exceptions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elected_or_appointed_female_heads_of_state

Granted that more than a few of those are through family connections, but plenty were elected on their own merits.

That's still only a fraction of current countries that have an incumbent female leader. We need 50-50 rule.

Ok what I was specifically talking about is countries where women are doing pretty badly as a group, like in Pakistan, but have had a female head of state.  I just want to clarify before everybody brings up Sweden or something.

Actually Sweden has never had a female head of state or government yet. :p

Each of the coloured countries has had some sort of female leadership.

I don't think Kim Campbell really counts.

That map doesn't include Monarchs.
