Number 3 is a lesson the EU should take to heart too.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

I'm with HVC. I think 2 and 3 are basically right and 1 is far too soon to tell (also not sure the US is likely to level Zhongnanhai any time soon).

I'd even say not just about not getting trampled but just shaping events. But Europe is far more exposed on energy than the US or Israel and we've already seen how destabilising the collapse of Syria (population 15 million) was on European politics. If this has an impact on energy or leads to major outflows of refugees from Iran (population 90 million), Europe is going to feel it. But Europe's ability to actually shape that impact is basically reliant on our relations with Turkey and the US.
Let's bomb Russia!

I've told you, we Canadians will gladly provide energy for security :P

Just need some seed money.

* edit* you should also ignore the greens on nuclear power. Stupid greens *old man grumbly sounds*

We'll quickly see how well isolated that ivory tower is at the EU

Europe probably is going to have to spend a ton of money making sure those refugees never make it there. You already see how destabilizing politically refugees have already been on Europe. An Iranian refugee crisis is going to be orders of magnitude larger.
