Once every 7 years?  We get several typhoons every year.  No wonder you guys don't build houses that can withstand them.

   Once every 7 years what?  Hurricanes hitting the US or New Orleans specifically?

CountDeMoney

It just happens to be the 7 year anniversary of Katrina, Mono.  It ain't locusts.

New Orleans.  I know the US gets lots of typhoons every year, but it seems that the odds of hitting an individual city isn't that high.  As I said HK gets several hits every year.

Eh...it isn't particularly rare for hurricanes and tropical storms to pass through there, it just depends on how much they curve to the right after hitting Florida, obviously.  Katrina and now Isaac just really face fucked them.  Isaac still seems to just be sitting there.  Kind of interesting.  Dumping a bunch of rain, but the wind is slowing down, etc, and it's "only" a tropical storm now.

They got pretty lucky that Rita "missed" in 05, about two weeks after Katrina.  That one landed on the Texas-Louisiana border and really wrecked stuff there.

E:  I wish they'd show the replay of the dumb Weather Channel reporter trying to twist the stop sign pole.  She pointed out that "OMG THE SIGN IS TURNED THE WRONG WAY! WIND STRONG!" (I muted it then), then started trying to twist the pole to turn it back the way it was supposed to be.  The pole that is embedded in the sidewalk.

New Orleans gets hit often, but getting hit directly is somewhat rarer.  The city is also very susceptible to floods.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Direct hits by the eye, or just brushed by the outer bands? There's a big difference.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Is this hurricane/tropical storm anything special or is it that modern media coverage has reached saturation point and blows events like this out of all proportion ?

Well, it's not a strong hurricane, but the fact that it's completely stalled over the Louisiana coast means it's still dumping a shitload of water on New Orleans, long after it should've moved on.
It's doing more damage than anticipated.

Go make stupid jokes in your own thread, jackass.  The convention is in South Florida- they had their storm on Sunday.

How are the puddy tats outside?  How's your perimeter?  Any leakage?

Original Kitteh is the only one outside.  She's apparently holed up.  The perimeter is good.  No interior leaks.

Everyone else is good, including the wife.  Hoping for successful transition to bookkeeping for accounting firm.
