I've finally bought the ultimate edition and am ready to finally finally play the game.

Any must use mods to make things better?

I think you are fine with vanilla for the first game. I enjoyed it greatly.

I've only used mods to improve graphics. You should play in hardcore mode though, it doesn't make things too difficult but adds a nice challenge.

yes!

Josquius

Hardcore is the one where you have to eat and drink right?

and hmm, thought it was a mod heavy game, that makes things easier though!

Yes, hardcore makes you eat and drink, and ammo has weight.

You don't really need mods for F:NV unless you absolutely want naked anime furries in your game. :P

There are a number of excellent quest mods and the like for FONV, but the fact of the matter is that FONV basically already incorporates so many fan mods made for FO3 that you don't need any to start with.  The Darnified UI will be something you will want to add at some point, but it also uses the script extender (NVSE), so that's something you won't want to start with if you don't know how to install mods.

I agree that, for now, you should just play the game.  Have fun!  It's a great game.

Just play the game. If you want to do gay things in the game talk to Mono.

Tell me of the graphics mods.  The engine is really showing it's age, and it could use some prettying up.  In particular it bothered me that it looked like characters sorta floated a few centimeters above the ground as they ran around.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I recently started playing a new game of this, and this time I decided to assassinate that son of a bitch Mr. House instead of giving him the chip.  We'll see what happens this time around... hopefully I am not at war with everyone all at once.

I got bored just before going to meet caesar and stopped playing. As I do.

Avoid playing Dead Money or Old World Blues at all cost.

Why?  A while back I got all the add-on content as a bundle, but I've never tried any of it before.

They are both terrible.  Nearly unplayable.  Completely combat dependent (which is not in keeping with how Fallout should be-you can get through FO1 and 2 without firing a shot), a lot of weird scripted bullshit, and a lot of small, closed-off combat enviornments that highlight the age of the engine.  I also think most of the DLCs are seriously overwritten.

I'm pretty sure you have to engage in combat in FO:NV regardless. And Old World Blues at least has a lot of hilarious dialogue. I definitely recommend that one.
