Defending 10 planets in the time they gave is basically impossible. The choice is basically which to defend at this point.

Manor Lords seems to be living up to the hype.

Honestly I'm not getting it. Why is it so special? Aren't there a million similar games out there? What does this one do different?
That said it did end up on my wishlist somehow.

From what I've seen in e.g. OPB's gameplay video, it comes with a strategic layer, i.e. you're not only building one village, but there's competing villages to interact with or land to grab from.

There also seems to be a reasonable attempt at verosimilitude, too. I'm intrigued.

The demo was quite enjoyable. Haven't played enough to elaborate on the actual early access. 
Looks gorgeous though, and runs quite well so far.
I'm pretty sure people with more esthetic sense than I will make awesome city journals with this

For me a big factor is that it's not grid-based. I wish Cities Skylines 2 had that.

You always have random It games of the moment.

Foundation with its cartoony look (and no combat) has been scratching my itch again for non grid based city building so will be a while yet until I consider getting this (though it has also been on my wishlist during its early access).

I noticed a few months ago Manor Lords was latched on by the Creative Assembly haters as the Total War killer. Never understood why, but I wouldn't rule out that vocal and weird community contributing to the hype. They... feel strongly about things.

Well, the dev has come out before release, pointing out that it's not a Total War style game, or Age of Empires style game etc., trying to dispel any unrealistic expectations and trying to nip that kind of hype in the bud.
