I just wanted to say to you specifically, but more generally to the people of languish:

Equity is a fine goal for a national polity. A society that doesn't provide for its sick and elderly isn't much of a society- caring for the weak is one of the reasons we give authority figures our legitimacy. The fact that dying old people, who should be capitalizing on the fact we can have them live longer and in more comfort than ever before, have to make the tough call of dying prematurely with an inheritance or dying and leaving their grandchildren with debt is not something that should exist.

Unfortunately, the South, having lost most of its cultural base and values, has adopted a defensive position where it sees itself mostly in terms of opposition- the South is more against things the rest of the national polis is for than having clear ideologies rooted in its own ground.

Also unfortunately, race colours things. We live in a selfish society where there's a sense that society gave you little of what you have, and you did it all for yourself- so there's certainly no need to give back to society, or be forced to do so by the state. Distrust of the state is pervasive. But why wouldn't it be? The state intervenes on behalf of blacks, it is felt, and wealth is taken from people we care about (white southerners) to people we fear and resent (black southerners.)

This is unfortunate- there is no real unity, and the bad faith between whites and blacks prevents an idea like a strong social contract in which we all take care of each other. As a result, without any consensus on how to spend the wealthy's money to benefit society, they merely accrue it- without adequate sense of social obligation to improve the life of other Americans.

The individuality, distrust of gov't, and poisoned race relations/multiculturalism of America makes wealth redistribution a difficult case here. But it is a good thing! The social contract and cradle to grave socialism is a desirable thing, it just needs a more homogenous, law-abiding and responsible for the greater good.

Because after all, we should care about each other and want to provide for the needs of those we can care about- which is most easiest with those like us, or at the very least those who can abide by the societal construct and obey the laws and culture of whatever given land it is.

That's all. :)

No, it has to be one of those with two last names.  So pick from Sheila Jackson Lee, Caroline Cheeks-Kilpatrick (Kwame's mom!), Carol Mostly-Wrong, etc.

I'd settle for him doing that to that gal from Florida who wears them crazy cowboy hats-- Fredrica Wilson (?)

Rick Perry has two last names?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Besides, the whole point was that you CAN'T have a nice welfare state with a cultural other you not only feel no sense of community with but perceive to be a damaging parasite.

I'll just go to Japan and work hard to pay taxes for their elderly. I'd like to take care of the elderly of such a nation.  :)

Lettow, Ide doesn't have sympathy for communism out of compassion for each member of society, but because he wants to string up and/or confiscate the possessions of those who have more money than he does.

:P (sort of)

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Everyone's political beliefs grow out of their own selfish needs, yes.  It's cute when people pretend otherwise though. :)
