So.  "Made in [PR]China," eh?

Speaking of which, is there a phone actually manufactured in the U.S. or other non-evil country?  I assume a lot of components are going to be made in a Dengist slave labor shop no matter what, but I can live with final assembly in a nation with at least marginal labor protections.

Not to my knowledge; can't speak for the others, though- internally, a lot, if not most, phones are a mishmash of Foxconn, Motorola, and Samsung parts, so final assembly usually takes place close to the supply lines.

Aren't HTC phones assembled in Taiwan (where the company HQ is)?

Well, according to a CNET article, the answer to the first part of the question is no.  My God, this country sucks.

I could buy a Finnish phone that is borderline discontinued.

I could take my chances and buy a Samsung, that may or may not be made in the RoK.

HTC seems to be okay, like Burger sez.

Turns out I could buy a filthy iPhone as long as it was one of the one's made in Brazil, which is delightfully non-evil, just shitty.  In fact, Money's may have been made by the City of God kids all grown up and turned responsible, instead of a suicidal Chinese man who may never feel the inside of a woman.

Dude, important shit isn't made here any more, so why should the toys and gadgets be?

I've bought two cell phones recently, both nokias, one made in India, the other Romania; both democracies.

Gotta be the change you wish to see in the world.

Also, self-righteousness is its own reward.

OK, that's the stupidest, most counter-intuitive method for zooming out on something.  Ever.

I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Once you learn to pinch to zoom, doing the opposite action for the opposite result makes a lot of sense.

We did some Facetime video chat on the iPad with my son and his grandparents.  Which is wonderful - but his grandparents decided that doing virtual "high fives" would be lots of fun.  And I soppose they were, but periodically while he was slapping the surface of the iPad I have no idea what some of the multi-touch commands he managed to activate...

This might be a stupid question, but these things connect with computers properly, don't they?

If by "properly", you mean through Apple's proprietary software...then yes.

Yeah, I kinda figured.  That's worked out so well with something as simple as an mp3 player, I'm sure there's no way they could fuck up something more complicated.
