All of these kinds of teams and their supporters who seem to be stuck in the politics of 50 years ago - do their fans actually believe in this kind of stuff, or do they chant it merely because it's what they've always done?

My favorite comment on this sort of thing was where G. MacDonald Fraser noted that a catholic football player in Scotland playing on a traditionally protestant team against a traditionally catholic one was observed fingering his rosary in prayer before the big game and then remarking to his teammates "right, let's get tore inna these papes".  :D

Well that article sucked they never actually reported what he did.  He chanted some 'sectarian remarks'?

'Catholics are paedos?'  'Shi'ites are sado-masochist weirdos?'  I mean huh?

Yeah, that was my question.  "Respectfully, I believe my religion to be superior and more logically consistent than your own!"

Yes they should obviously repeat criminal statements. They should go to gaol for you.

Eh they would only be banned from football for five years.  Journalists must make sacrifices to get the truth out.

This is the most famous  one
Billy Boys to Marching Theough Georgia

Hullo, Hullo
We are the Billy Boys
Hullo, Hullo
You'll know us by our noise
We're up to our knees in fenian blood
Surrender or you'll die
For we are
The Brigton Derry Boys

There's also one that starts "The famine is over, why don't you go home".

Probably plenty more, I dunno. Jock football is so fifth rate.

Curious they would use a tune about a Catholic general devastating Protestant territories.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I thought Sherman wasn't a believer?  I mean granted that is not necessarily inconsistent with being a Catholic.

He was raised Catholic and never actually left the Church.  I think his son became a Priest.  He did stop attending mass after the war, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was a non-believer.

To the best of my knowledge he was from a catholic family, but it seems he became an atheist sometime during the war. Similar to Lincoln and Washington's deconversion processes. The horror of war led them to the problem of evil and led them to conclude that no loving god exists.

Really?  Please source that he became an atheist.  But then you said similar about Lincoln when it seems the opposite is true.

If you are a Catholic believer why would you stop attending mass?  Isn't that kind of important if you believe?

But I could have sworn I heard he stopped believing during the war but I could be wrong.  Did Sherman write any memoirs?  I guess even if he did he would not have mentioned that sort of thing.
